Fierofool:
I had the same problem yesterday on my 86 with the Gen 2 conversion.  I raised the hood, rotated the knob to open it by hand.  Then turned on the lights to allow the left one to open.  Closed them and opened them several times and they worked perfectly.  If that doesn't fix it, Cardone sells replacement motors, as well as some or the auto parts stores you are familiar with.  Rock Auto sells the Cardone as well as remanufactured OE.  https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/pontiac,1987,fiero,2.8l+173cid+v6,1249152,body+&+lamp+assembly,headlamp+motor,1412

Raydar:
When mine did that, I had a cracked gear, which would drag a bit on the motor gear. The current draw from the binding gear, in addition to the spring loaded doors, was enough to shut off the module/motor. With the hood open, it would go all the way up.
There's always an outside chance that the grease may just be dried up. Maybe?

Donster:
Thanks all.
I ordered a complete motor from Rockauto.
Had to get some other things anyways. :-)
