Title: GEORGIA FIERO CLUB MEMBERSHIP
Post by: oldone on August 17, 2015, 10:11:46 pm
I joined Georgia fiero club in august of 2008 shortly after finding out I had cancer. I had my eye on a 85 gt that had been sitting in a car lot for 7 years. I guess the cancer made wife finally give in and I bought it. I did a few things to it, nothing fancy a couple of scoops, some big tires and mags, mr mike leather seats boy I loved that car.  before you know it I had 5 fieros. I had a lot of fun with the club and made some good friends, we used to get 20 or more people at the meetings and the parking lot at the galaxy was full of fieros and it was like a swap meet once a month. slowly but surely the participation dropped off , for me my best friend moved to charlotte and took his fiero with him. somehow it didn`t seem as much fun anymore and eventually I sold my cars ( 1 was an 88 gt t-top for $1000.00 what a jerk) and last to go was my beautiful primer gray 85 gt, that was the straw that broke the camels back. the kid I sold it to  took the fast and furious route and totaled it. so its been a couple of years and I`ve decided to come back and buy another fiero but the members are few and far between. now I know theres a lot of fieros and owners out there and I know that the galaxy diner isn't conveniently close for everyone ( I drive almost an hour ) but I`ve gotten use to it. what I`m trying to say is all you crazy fiero addicts why don`t you come out to a meeting and lets try to build the biggest fiero club in the usa. if you don`t like the meeting place maybe the officers would consider rotating meetings to different restraunts in your area, im` sure you would enjoy going to one of your local watering holes and show up with 20 or 30 fieros behind you. everytime I sign on theres usually 10 to 15 guests online beside myself. why not sign-in and let us know what you think, it doesn`t cost anything there are paying members and non-paying members and no one cares which you are, we`re just there to have fun, if all of you out there would join us who knows what kind of fun we could have and what kind of ideas and things you all could come up with. we have a few very knowledgable fiero guys in the club (not me) but we could always use a couple of fiero mechanics that wouldn`t mind working on fieros for a reasonable fee. well I didn`t mean to climb on the soap box I just thought it such a waste all of us within a hour or so of each other and we can`t take a couple of hours a month to meet each other and share are cars and ideas for more fiero fun.    oldone in cartersville

I'd like to attend a meeting at the Galaxy, but it's over two hours there, two hours back, and a meeting that should make it long enough to justify four hours in an '88 Fiero.  At least six hours of my Saturday are gone.  Those of you with kids and spouses understand why attending isn't easy.

Your idea of rotating locations is great.  But there's not much between Augusta and Atlanta.

Instead of official meetings, can I suggest Fiero Cruises and gatherings?  The local Mustang Club has "Pony Rides" to DQs and on Sunday nights they usually meet at Sonic.  What's wrong with having three or more Fieros meet at a Sonic on a Sunday night?  In the words of Arlo Guthrie, people would think, "It's a Movement".

In the survey I started, someone posted a suggestion of meeting up at a different Sonic somewhere across the state, once a month.  Without going back to look at the thread, I think that's what was suggested.  Top make that effective, we'd have to have a pretty solid commitment so that more than just 1 or 2 cars show up.

If we do some thing like that, maybe we could rotate around the state, starting somewhere up north, moving clockwise around, for example start in Chatsworth if there's a Sonic there, then move around toward Cleveland or Toccoa  and on down around the northern half of the state.  We should be able to find Sonic locations in almost every quadrant of the state.

Could Skype play a part somehow?

pgackerman  just wondering, do you have any fiero friends around where you live. do you help each other out or correspond on Georgia fiero forum or pennocks? if theres enough of you in your area maybe as fierofool suggested there could be a SONIC DRIVE-IN fiero caravan that would rotate around the area. I would be in for that but would like it to be in addition to our regular monthly meeting. I don`t live near any fiero owners out in Cartersville and I used to get withdrawal waiting for the monthly meeting. personally I would like more activity then once a month. I hope the club doesn`t mind me voicing my opinion , I usally don`t say a lot. I think it would be fun to travel around to different areas in groups , after all isn`t driving these fieros is what its all about even if its 2 hours there and 2 hours back if your in a group of fieros its fun.

PG and F85 are our members from Augusta.  They've been regular participants with us and we with them.  There a few other Fieros down that way, including the one we just gave the 88GT to.

I looked at the Sonic suggestion and it was for the 4th Saturday of each month.  I agree that we should keep the regular monthly meeting at one location so everyone can know where and when the meeting is.  Visitors would know where to find us.  The cruise-ins are intended to give us exposure in other areas and to those who might not know about us.

I wonder about f85`s idea about Skype. if there was some kind of way to have something set up where members could call in to a central laptop at the meetings and we could project it on to a old projector screen so we could see the callers and they could see us, it would definitely be cool. that kind of stuff is way over my head but I think f85 had a cool idea.

For me, part of the enjoyment of the meeting is the people present.  I'm not set up for a camera, though I've had one for years.  I don't intend to install it.  Like OldOne, not everyone is computer saavy.  It's also difficult to help someone who shows up with a problem or to do a tech session as both have taken place at meetings.  There have been brake jobs, steering column swaps, wheel bearing and spindle replacements, dew wipe replacements, and a myriad of other things we've done.  Some planned and some because an unknown or known person showed up needing repair before going home.  I can just see a meeting.  The president is sitting in front of a computer with a camera attached and everyone else is sitting at home.  It may work for NIFE and some others, but I just don't think we're at that level, yet.

Edit to say that I've never watched NIFE's webcast so I don't know how the meetings are conducted.  Whether it's interactive with everyone viewing, or if they are just a spectator.  It might work for us if viewers were only spectators.

I am curious, I wonder how many registered fieros there are in the state of Georgia. I wonder if theres a way to find out?

There may be a way to find out, but there may not be a way to find out where they are, and definitely not who they are.  Back in the 70's and into the 80's, you could get a tag number and DMV would tell you exactly where they lived.  Spot that 'Vette or GTO in a parking lot, get the tag number and later that night get the car.

Pg-(gum shoe)-Ackerman and I have chased and tracked down a many fiero owners in our day....including former Ga Fieros members. Except in rare cases, they just don't want to be bothered and just want to be left alone. I don't understand it at all. It's almost like an affliction, where they are in denial, then ashamed......I don't get it.....or maybe it's the stalking and chasing down part and the encounter in the parking lot thing that's got them bothered......hmm.
Although it hasn't resulted in New members, it definitely generates a lot of exposure is our regular attendance at coffee and cars. We're a regular fixture there and we field a lot of questions while we're there.

NIFE gets 30+ in attendance and others watching all over the country/world.  They broadcast from a library.

the real issue is the 12 guests who are watching now, they remain in the shadows, unwilling to communicate with us or participate in the club ideas or activities. these people are either ashamed of being associated with fieros or they are not fiero fanatics and just keep the cars as investments hoping they will be worth something someday. maybe if we had Georgia fiero club shirts and hats in the club merchandise they might order something to show they are fanatics. I just don`t get it, you go out of your way  to spend the money to get these cars running, but you don`t take pride in your cars and come for a few hours and let us see fieros. I guess its like someone said you have the wife, the kids, your chores, you just don`t have time to enjoy yourself with your fiero.

I don`t understand how all you guests check in with us everyday and never get any closer than being a onlooker . wouldn`t you like to meet us and put a face to our club names. if you would just come once to the galaxy diner you could have a good lunch they have a large variety on their menu and really cater to car clubs.  we`re very informal and pull together as many tables as we need. we just sit down and start talking about fieros and just about anything else you want to talk about. when we`re just about done eating we have business part of the meeting which doesn`t take to long. afterwards when we had a lot of people and fieros show up we would move how to the parking lot and check out all the cars and try to fix problems that anyone might have with their cars. sometimes parts swapping and parts buying goes on but mostly we`re just enjoying the cars and each other. the meeting usually starts at 1:30 pm, a lot of people used to come early and afterwards you can stay as long as you want and leave whenever you want. I can`t believe that all of you out there can invest time and money in fieros and not want to spend a few hours a month showing off your pride and joy with people who understand your passion. I know I`m dying to get another fiero, its been too long since my last one, as soon as I can free up some space and money I`m be finding my next love! I can`t wait to pull up to the galaxy diner in a fiero and see the parking lot full of fieros and a lot of happy faces, ihope you`ll be there.

well its 2:13 am in the morning and theres 11 guests on line, don`t you guys ever sleep? well as long as you`re on here and you`re not going to become one of the few why don`t you check out some of the RUN FOR THE HILLS VIDEOS , it will give you a idea of what your missing. its pretty exciting stuff when you`re actually there. I remember my first time, the run starts and every so often you stop for a break, well when we hit that first break I was weak, dizzy, sick to my stomach and out of breath. I spent the whole break slumped over in my car. but at the same time it was exciting driving a car on those hilly, curvy road in a car that was made to challenge those kind of roads and if you never pushed your fiero in anything but a straight line you can`t imagine how good it fields to hug those curves, down shift and sometimes have to use the brakes to save it.  fast drivers in the front, a little more cautious drivers next, slower drivers after that and tourist after that. try to stay somewhere near the speed limit and definitely do not touch the yellow line. there are state troopers stationed every so often and most of them will let you get away with a little excess but you never know. its fun to run in a long line of fieros you just kind of find a comfortable pace and spot in the line and have fun. I wish I could be there this year its my mothers 90th birthday that weekend and I`ll be in florida. maybe if its not against the club rules we could get fierofool to put the rules and regulation sheet on here that they give the drivers on the day of the run so you can get idea of whats involved. doesn`t matter where you`re in the line its not a race you just drive what feels comfortable to you and your passenger if you bring one.  I got to hit the sack !

It occurs to me that some of the guests might be "spambots" trolling for email addresses.
As of now (6:30 AM) there are 11 guests and 2 users.

I've thought of that possibility, too.  That and the fact that we do have some people in other parts of the world who are registered or look in.

Donster looking in from all those horrible places he has to go in Europe.  Proff from down Australia way.  There was one in Washington State and another in the Vancouver area that I used to correspond with.  I know they looked, but didn't register.  I can only recall one instance, and that was in the last month or so, that I have ever seen no one other than myself looking at the forum.  There were no users and 1 guest.  Me.  It only lasted long enough for me to look at a post and when I went back to Home, there were guests, aside from myself.

It might be possible that they are harvesting phone numbers, too, as well as email addresses.  I think that maybe the way the board is set up, requiring login to see a member's email address, that the only thing retrievable are those that we actually post without encrypting our email like email "at" foruum "dot" com or phone numbers Won Too 3-Fore 5 Six-7 Ate 9 Zero.

isn`t there some way to tell if it is really a guest or a spambot? I guess I`m wasting my time telling everybody to come on down. I guess maybe we need to up security to make it harder for people to get on the website. if people want to visit us they will have to work at it.

Pretty sure that everything is "read only" by default. No real reason to limit access. As long as our email addys are only visible to registered users, the spambots can't really do any harm.
Not to "bring you down", but keep in mind that the Fiero is a "niche" vehicle. On top of that, it now belongs to an orphan brand. Not that that will make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, but it's something to think about.

I do hope that others pop in and join us, but there are not a lot of Fiero folks.
I would compare us to the Corvair folks. We're a loyal bunch, but not in large numbers.

how about asking guests to tell what kind of fiero they have when they sign in?
Title: Re: GEORGIA FIERO CLUB MEMBERSHIP

A guest can't sign in.  They have to be a registered user.  Registered users show up as guests when they don't sign in.  Any time you look at the message board without signing in, you show up as one of the number of guests.  You can't post or access some of the areas of the board until you sign in, then your username shows up at the bottom as a user.

When I approve a new member, I ask them to go to the General Discussion section and introduce themselves to everyone and tell us something about their car or the car they'd like to have.  Some of them never respond, nor ever sign in again.  I occasionally go through the registered members, and those that have registered and never logged in again for a period of one year, I delete their account.

Hey Oldone.  I thought you were forever done with Fieros.   I figured after that last RFTH after we parted ways that would be the last that the Fiero community would hear from you.  I'm still over here in Waleska.  When you get that next Fiero, I have a heavily primed rear bumper cover I can sell you.  Are you going to RFTH this week-end?  I'm not sure I'll be making it.

No objection to recording meetings, but as a reference thing.  Skype meetings are BORING.

Are you all by your lonesome, now that f85gtron has moved, or are there other Fiero owners out your way?

NIFE gets 10-15 people at a meeting.  Not all meetings are recorded.  I'm guessing that the recording happens only when technically-minded people are there.  Sometimes, they have trouble getting the laptop connected to the projector.
