THE GALAXY DINER IS CLOSING Today Steve and I had lunch at The Diner and as we were leaving Maria gave us the news. They weren't able to renew their lease on the building. Tomorrow, December 29, 2019 will be their last day of operation at Henderson Mill Road.
She said she's taking about a month to sort out and make plans as to whether they will open elsewhere. A new meeting place needs to be identified, maybe in that area since it's somewhat central to our active members.
American Pie is out. They closed in 2007 when Sandy Springs incorporated that area and became a city. The owner said that Liquor Laws and Last Call laws were changed and that seriously affected their bottom line.
Michael McDonnell, you know what area pretty well. Have any ideas where we should meet for January, even if it's a temporary location?
Art Doctor, do you have any suggestions?
-
This is terrible news, on the one hand, but is an opportunity for a change of meeting venues, on the other hand.
Of course, the sooner a decision is made, the better. Ideally, a list should be made of what is desired in a new meeting venue.
I'll present a few items for consideration:
Proximity
Ease of access
Willingness of the site to host a group regularly
Large parking lot
Quality of area
Agreeable food/pricing?
-
That sux....... can meet at my shop until a new place is found
-
Hmmm. I can't really put that in the newsletter.
-
Yesterday Cafe, Greensboro, GA.
http://theyesterdaycafe.com/ (http://theyesterdaycafe.com/)
At least once...
Then maybe Social Circle.
Might even attend a few meetings if I don't have to spend 4 hours in my car.
-
Yesterday Cafe's menu is being updated, meaning not available.
Well, a while back a suggestion was made of getting a central place for all members. It seems there are 2 from all the way West, and 1 from all the way East. There seem to be 3 near the Diner. Dunno about Richard or Scott, but suspect Richard is not far from the Diner, and Scott is about an hour from there.
-
Social Circle almost is a circle. Hot Rod's Diner?
-
I suspect you will all have a much better idea of what is Central and such. I however am all about good food so while I don't make many meetings I vote for somewhere with really good food 😁
-
Of those who attend meetings, they are spread between Blairsville in far NE Georgia, Carnesville in E. Georgia, Dallas/Douglasville in W. Georgia, Adairsville in far NW Georgia. Everyone else is somewhere inside those points.
-
I go to a Unisys meeting at a Golden Corral that is up 400 near the mall
-
Sorry to hear about Galaxy closing. I only went there one time with my daughters but we liked the food. If you are looking for suggestions I’ve heard the Wind Creek casino in Atmore, AL is very nice this time of year!! Hope to make it back to Atlanta for a meeting in the Spring.

My V8 club guys are having this same discussion. Ill let y'all know what we come up with. That was our Board of Directors meet up before we went t o a club members garage to do the actual club business. Our monthly club meeting is always held at JR's Loghouse located just OTP on Peachtree Industrial blvd in Doraville. They have been friendly the last few years. They have a "meeting room" in the back we use they close off the partition doors. Prior to JR's we meet at the Old Hickory House, but that became a problem for reasons I was not privy to back then and thus the switch to JR's
-
Our Board Chairman and I talked this morning and we talked about a temporary place until a final location can be determined. Old Hickory was one, but Mike said that he thought it was going to be closing due to area development projects. Another temporary location is the Varsity Jr. just off Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Norcross. Just waiting on him to name a place for this month's meeting.

What'll ya have, what'll ya have?
-
Is Deloris van Cartier a waitress there?
-
No Nuns, even though a lot of them may have Habits.

Out of curiosity, when did they find out?

The Old Hickory House is closing at some point according to rumors but would work for a temporary location.
JR's on Peachtree is easier to get to right off 285 though. I can call them tomorrow and see if we can set up there for a few months until we can find a place. Thoughts?
-
There must be another name. So, non-smoking, family-friendly, club-friendly, large-lot, easy-access?
I would call first, to get their opinion. If they say no, it doesn't matter what we think. If they say yes, it's at least an option. I prefer to start with all my facts.
-
It may have been another name but I have dined at JR's seems like 25-30 years ago and I think it was just BBQ then. They now have a wider variety. From their website:
BBQ & old-school Southern breakfast are the specialties of this down-home restaurant built of logs.
How about it, Art Doctor. What's on their lunch table?
-
I'll call them tomorrow.
Having a meeting room would make it much easier to conduct a meeting.
-
Their menu is no worse than the Galaxy but certainly smaller. Yes it is a BBQ place, but they have salads, burgers, sausages, good sides, bread baskets. To be honest it is predicable, reasonably priced and just ok. However, their Sunday brunch is awesome, I wish they served anytime breakfast. Possibly have a meeting on Saturday earlier to catch the breakfast?
-
The Varsity Jr is a good idea.
I am also familiar with JR's. It's been quite a long time since I've been there, but if they are "club friendly", it's a valid consideration.
-
Mike, did you check on anything?
-
We can meet at JR's Log House this month if that works for everyone. They seemed happy to accommodate us. I went ahead and reserved the meeting room for this month at our regular meeting time.
-
JR's Loghouse, 6601 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092
Off the access road, just south of Jimmy Carter Blvd. Peachtree Corners Circle
There is a problem if coming south on Peachtree Industrial. There is no exit to the access road. One must figure out how to get onto Jimmy Carter Blvd in order to get onto the access road. Coming north there's an exit for Jones Mill Rd/Peachtree Corners Circle.
-
If coming South on Peachtree Industrial Blvd one needs to make a right on Holcomb Bridge Road and then a left on 141 staying to the right two lanes and taking the access road. JR's then has parking lot access direct from the access road, it is on your right.
-
Thanks, T.A.D.
I propose that, if JR's is chosen as the permanent meeting place, the directions from both TAD & Fierofool are added to the home page, along with a link to a map marked with these directions.
-
T.A.D, that would be RIGHT on Holcomb Bridge and then Left on 141 if coming south on PIB.
-
You are correct, I went back and fixed it after I realized what I had done. We must have been typing at the same time, I corrected about a minute before you posted.
-
Update to the home page?
-
Welp. There go the Cheetah and Pink Pony.
-
Were those fixtures at the Diner?
-
Adult entertainment clubs. I think he meant that we chose JR's over the Cheetah Club or the Pink Pony Club.
-
Just watch a Jeff Foxworthy show. Plenty of adult entertainment.
-
Cheetah... a/k/a "Spring Street Ballet"
-

Here you go, Roger: ;)

-
Hubba hubba!
-
I think she has her eye on you, Roger!
-
I have not looked at a map yet..... isnt the new meeting place near the Oasis?
-
The Oasis had a skank attack and closed.
JR's is north on Peachtree Industrial outside the perimeter. You could come down 400 to Holcombe Bridge toward Norcross. Turn right on Peachtree Corners Circle and it's just before you get to Peachtree Industrial, on your left.
Anyone coming north on Peachtree Industrial from I-285 would have to exit at the Jones Mill/Peachtree Corners Circle Exit
-
Will this location be considered for permanence, or is this only intended to be a temporary location?
-
It appears like it is more centered and easier to get to( not havning to cope with the top permiter work being done near 400 to I85)
-
This is essentially only 2 exits off the perimeter before the exit for The Diner. The others being Buford Hwy and I-85 off the perimeter. Anyone out on the north side of the perimeter would still have to contend with the construction traffic out there.
-
To get to the Diner, it seemed that I had to make several big loops. One street dead-ended, and I had to go around what appeared to be a mall.
It would be awesome to have a meeting place where the Fieros were visible from a main thoroughfare.
-

JR's isn't that place. It's fairly well off the beaten path, as I recall. Even though it's at the intersection of two major roads, it's on top of a hill, hidden by trees and walls. People driving past are going to be busy figuring out where their turn is.

-
Well, at least the food looks good--other than that rectangular piece of something.
-
About the only way to get any exposure would be that we all managed to park along the front at Peachtree Corners Circle. When we arrived, the lot was full. When we left, there were lots and lots of parking spaces. Apparently our meeting time is their busy time.
For me, the BBQ was good. The Brunswick Stew was also good. Sliced french bread or cornbread with a BBQ plate. French bread was tough and rubbery. Only 1 BBQ sauce offered. Tea was good with a good tea aftertaste. Company was great. 13 people, even with the lousy weather. Jason and Jordan brought a friend, Chris who owns an 86SE and 87GT. Larry The Art Doctor joined us, as did Eli. Both new members from last month.
No pictures taken, but it did happen.
-
How hard can it be to make good French toast?
Bandanas has a number of BBQ sause choices. All bad.
-
It wasn't french toast. It was a slice of french bread that had been placed on the grill for a moment. Like Texas toast but without any butter.
-
The food was good and the service was also good. A lot of room, prices werent bad and it appeared to be centeraly located. Does anyone have a map of where all the usual attendees live so we could find a place centrally located where the traffic isnt a night mare. Comming from Kennesaw it only took me 1/2 hour, It took me that long to get to 285 when I had to go to the Dinner
-
I have been unable to find the one previously sugested here, but here is a place to calculate location:
https://batchgeo.com/
The problem is that this doesn't take into account the difficulties of traffic and road issues.
-
Just using the city name, we're located in
Augusta
Blairsville
Carnesville
Braselton
Cumming
Statham
Ball Ground
Kennesaw
Douglasville
Lawrenceville (2)
Auburn
East and west extremes are Carnesville and Douglasville. Leaving out Blairsville, a central location might be somewhere in the area of Duluth, Johns Creek or Alpharetta. Johns Creek would be more difficult for Douglasville and Kennesaw. Alpharetta would be more difficult for Carnesville
-
That leaves Duluth.
-
There is a place on the Fulton County side of Duluth but their burgers start at $25 and all steaks are above $30. Good corner exposure to 2 major roads, but too pricey for Frugal Fiero Folks as Keith Goodyear calls us.
Another pace over on the Gwinnett side of the river is Duluth Diner. Menu and prices are somewhat similar to The Galaxy Diner. Located right on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, just south of the intersection with Pleasant Hill Road.
Those would be a little further for Douglasville and Kennesaw by maybe 10 miles and maybe 10 miles closer for Carnesville, Braselton, Cumming and Ball Ground. It's a straight shot off I-85 or Ga. 400 and I-285.

Ted's Montana Grill isn't that expensive!

Any chance Augusta can get added to this list? Not saying I'll be a regular attendee, but my odds of appearing become much higher if I'm not looking at a 5+ hour round trip.
-
Those locations are in the same general area of The Diner, so to speak. Why don't you take a trip up to see your daughter on the weekends of the meetings?
-
The V8 board has decided to have our monthly BOD meeting at Folks Restaurant on LaVista in Tucker in lieu of the Galaxy. It is one exit further around 285 for me coming from Chamblee. The main reason for us to stay in Tucker is that we have a post-meal access to a deceased long-time member's empty 5 car garage to meet in for sometimes heated discussions (his wife is still friendly with many members and has been given a free lifetime membership). Folks is right off the exit, does have a side "meeting" room with two long tables that are first come first served, a second side area that would hold many people and the ability to push tables together between rows of bench seats like the galaxy. No reservations are taken but our server said if you call an hour or two earlier they will try and hold it (no guarantees). There is a parking area that fronts LaVista a short walk from the restaurant, if your looking for visibility. Since the V8 BOD meets on a Tuesday at 5:45 it is pretty much dead (till after rush at 7PM) and we should be able to get seated together without issue. A Saturday afternoon might pose a seating problem or might be fine, if 2:30 is an option over 1:30 I bent it would be nearly empty then. The food was pretty good, reasonable in cost, similar to JR's menu in many respects but with a much nicer atmosphere. Just another option.

Wow... THAT'S a blast from the past.
That marina was our "gas dock", when we had our boat, back in a previous life.

It mapped one location up in the Northeast.
-
That's likely Mike21 in Blairsville.
-
I meant up by New York.
-
The history page and the missing galaxy page will need to be updated, eventually.
-
For the heck of it, I did a sesrch, to see if Maria opened elsewhere. To my surprise, it showed the Diner open. So, I called the number, which was fuzzily out of service. I guess she didn't bother to update her online profile, or to shut down the web site.
-
thats probably the last thing that is on her mind
-
She told me she was going to give thought to possibly opening elsewhere. May be why she didn't take the site down. All she would need to do is to change the address. Maybe.
-
thats probably the last thing that is on her mind
Maybe, but thatxs poor business practice. You have to set and maintain expectations. Imagine someone who sees the website, goes to the diner, only to find itxs closed. Heck, the club had that experience. It turns people off. Now, imaging that the person is from out of town. They would likely never return to the new location. Had the site instead been updated, the expectation of currently closed would have maintained goodwill.
