Title: The Joel Project
Post by: Fierofool on August 02, 2013, 08:58:17 am
Many of you know what is meant by The Joel Project either because you read about on Pennocks, or because you committed a weekend to go to Whodeanie's and work on the car.  For those that don't know what it is, a brief description.

Johnyrottin donated an 84 SE that was to be converted to a V6, restored and given to a young man in Florida.  A deserving young man who couldn't afford a car.  The car was shipped to Whodeanie's and many people from around the country came in to work on the car.  This was a complete vehicle that was to get some upgrades.  A young man from New Hampshire drove down and spent a week replacing the hundreds of harness connectors that were needed for a V6 conversion.

A low mileage slightly built 2.8 was dropped in and other work was done on the car but it wasn't finished.  When everyone departed, the car was left at Whodeanie's.  With the closing of Whodeanie's Customs, things were moved to a property in Jasper, Ga.  Unfortunately, that property had a tax lein placed against it and is scheduled to be siezed by the tax assessor on August 6.

With the urging and approval of Johnyrottin (John Harbor) I picked up the car on August 1 and transported it to ThaDriver's shop in Commerce, Ga. for storage and safe keeping.  Well, I say I transported the car, I should have said I transported what is left.  The interior has been gutted, the deck lid is gone and substituted with a fastback deck lid, front fenders are gone, the door panels and rear lower half are gone.  Front and rear fascias had been removed, but were recovered and brought along.

John has asked The Georgia Fiero Club to take possession and finish the car.  Lots of stuff is needed.  Front fenders, a V6 exhaust system, seats, front fenders, outer door skins, rear lower quarters and a rear deck lid.  I believe we still have the old seats from the Club Courtesy Car, but they will need to be re-covered.  We have some items that can be traded for what you have.  A pair of GT door skins with the metal strip, a fastback rear deck lid with spoiler. and we have a F*rrari style rear bumper that can be sold to help pay for some items we need.

John asks that we find a deserving young person and turn the car over to them when it's finished since the intended recipient graduated recently, and this was planned to be a graduation present.

I have a full set of tires I will donate.  They're used, but they are better than the 4 'new' tires that are on the car.  These are 2 of the 'new' tires I brought the car back on, yesterday.  The missing parts weren't caused by the blown tires, but were missing when I picked up the car.

Actually I can't see this car being finished economically. You can buy a running complete Fiero for what this car will take to complete it, even if a lot of folks donate their time. Plus it will need a lot of time spent on it to paint it.  The club might be better off selling the car (or the engine?) & donating the proceeds to charity.
Most of the parts it needs I don't have any spares, or I would donate them. I may perhaps have some grey interior parts from the '88 Formula, if someone buys the T-Tops making it worth parting out.
However, if the club decides to build it I'll trade a good decklid + $50 for the fastback decklid (might need one someday). ;-)

Who was it at the meeting that said they had a set of seat covers to go on the Joel Project seats?  We also need regular coupe side body panels.  Front fenders, door skins, rear quarter panel and notchie quarter windows.  As long as the plastic framework is good, we can order a set of inserts from Paul McKibben.

We will need someone who's able to do wiring in case there are any of the connectors that need to be replaced.  Remember, this is an 84 that's been converted to a V6, so there was some wiring that needed to be converted.  I understand almost all of it was completed.

I have a set of tail lights that I can donate, and a radio to go into it.  We'll have to wire in some rear speakers, probably of the wafer type, since we don't have speaker seats and there's no provision for B pillar speakers.

If it hasn't already been replaced, I believe I have an instrument pod from an 85GT to replace the existing 84 instrument cluster.

I also have an HVAC/Radio surround for it, but we need the complete shift surround in gray.

I might have everything you need for it at the shop. Next time I go by there I'll see what's left. I know I had a bunch of fenders and door skins, and a few seats.

I spoke with someone last week that offered a complete 85GT that we could use to transfer the remaining goodies from the original Joel car.  I then talked with Johnyrottin about this and he was agreeable to us doing that.  I spoke again yesterday with the person that made the offer and they said that they didn't make the offer, so I guess we're back to square two.

Use it for what?  The person who offered the 85GT if we would tow it away denied making the offer when I asked about coming to get it.

ThaDriver just gave me a report on the 84 car.  The fresh brake calipers and pads that were put on the car are all gone.  Only the stainless braided brake lines are hanging there.  He will be checking to let me know if it has the 84 4:10 transmission or the later 85-86 3:65 4-speed.

Just received this Private Message:

I've decided not to loose either one of my Fieros. I do have some body parts for an 84 Fiero that I'll let you come up here and get. But no bumpers.

So, if anyone else knows of a85 or later car that's basically complete with no body damage, except for engine, let us know. Manual transmission preferred.

I still have a red Fiero at my shop but I think it's an SE and just body panels and part of a motor and it has a manual tranny. Grey interior. If your interested let me know. The power is not on at the shop so it's hard to see what's left without a flashlight.

At the meeting today, we discussed the repair of your 86 and working a deal with you for the 85SE.  We are willing to bring your 86 down here, pay for the fuel pump replacement with an AC Delco pump and bring the car back to you.  With that, what would it take for us to get the 85SE.  Does it have a clear title in your name?  Could we see the car prior to making a deal?  Is it a 4 cylinder or a V6?

I have already bought a new fuel pump and filter. We'll just need somebody to push the 85SE out of the shop. And Gail agrees with me on it.

I'll give $50 for the '84 spaceframe & another $50 for the fastback decklid that's on it. Anyone that wants to can come up & pull all the good parts off of the spaceframe to use on whatever car the club comes up with.
I do have an '88 4 cyl. 5-speed car mostly complete (with most of an '84 tan interior in it) that belongs to a friend that I can sell for $500 (or $400 & the '84), if the club wants it.

Robbie has offered an 85 coupe and Gail has agreed that he can give it to us.  Just waiting on them to give us some details on the car and some pictures so we know what we have to work with.  I wouldn't discount the possibility of getting your car, though.

Looks like the only thing we have to work with on the car at your shop is the engine, transmission and stainless brake lines and maybe a few interior trim parts.

All I need on the '84 is the bare spaceframe. Wouldn't hurt if you left the wheels (or just the hubs) on it so I could roll it around without needing Godzilla to move it. ;-)
If I can't find a solid roof, the guy might want the sunroof panel & parts, but that's up to him.
Thanks,
Paul

If we get another car to transfer things over to, I'm sure you could work something with John.  He holds the title on the 84 and he has said that we could sell it to cover some of our costs.  I don't know how long it's going to take to get the car and title for the 85 from Robbie.

I just received a text from Gail and Robbie Finley.  The VIN number of the car they've donated is an 86SE.  It's a V6 and it's an early production car.  Number 57** of 83*** built in 86, so it's either an automatic or it's a 4-speed like Robbie thought it was.

VIN # 1G2PF3793GP205787

Now, the car is inside his shop, back among some other cars.  All these cars have been sitting since Robbie's accident.  They probably won't start, even if we had jumper cables.  I don't know how many have flat tires, nor how far back the donor car is among the others.

I would like to go up next Saturday, November 2 and get the car.  I would like to have at least 2 people with me, but I can carry three in my truck.  I'll take along spare tires and a small compressor and several outdoor power cords.  Maybe we can borrow some power from a neighboring business.  Anyone have a drop light?

Who would be willing to go along to help out?

Anyone have a spare sunroof glass and latch to donate to the project?  We arrived home without one.  We could use a steering wheel of any style as long as it's good, and a right side power mirror along with the aero rocker panel for the drivers side.

Can you use the door locks and the trunk lock out of the old car in that car? And the steering wheel?
Title: Re: The Joel Project
Post by: Fierofool on November 05, 2013, 12:50:44 pm
I think the steering wheel in it has been replaced with a bad one or it never had a good one.  The door locks are there and I think the door key, as well.  The ignition cylinder will need to be swapped, too.  The one in the 86 is broken.  It will turn on, just the wings on it have been broken off.  The trunk lid will need to be replaced due to the lock being punched out, and the deck lid damaged.  The one we have on the original car is for a fastback so we'll need to find a new one for a notchie with a wing.

Paul, what color is it and does it have holes for a spoiler?  We could swap out the fastback lid on the car at your place or we could take the lid off the one down here.  If yours has a lock with key would be good since this one doesn't have a remote.

You can have the white one from the T-Top Formula (it has the spoiler holes). If you want to give me the fastback decklid, that would be great - you can also have the lock set (decklid & door locks) with key.

I promised pictures of the 86SE that Robbie and Gail Finley contributed.  I finally had some time today to take a few.  Here's what we have to work with.  Whatever parts remaining on the original Joel Project can be transferred to this car.
Set 1 of 2

Left Front

Front

Right Front

Front Fascia

Right Rear Aero Trim

Right Rear Corner

Passenger Seat & Rear Console

Radio Surround & Auxiliary Gauges

Set 2 of 2

Driver's Side Door Panel and Armrest

Steering Wheel & Instrument Panel

Driver's Seat

Driver's Mirror with Missing Stud & Door with Base Material Exposed

Broken Power Passenger Mirror

Driver's Seat View thru Sunroof

In addition, the driver's side rocker panel is missing.  The GT wheels belong to Ray and didn't come on the car.

Anyone with a 84-87 Notchback Aero Fascia, and a left aero rocker panel, we'd love to have them.  The car has an engine, but it's condition is unknown.  The plan is to swap out the engine from the original car.  The odometer on this one only shows 9,669.  It's doubtful that is correct.  If anyone can provide a CarFax, I can get the VIN for you.

Headliner needs replaced, but I believe the one in the other car has already been re-covered and can be swapped out.  The passenger B pillar speaker cover has been broken off.  I have a replacement.  I also have a driver's side door panel and arm rest, but a steering wheel, dash, instrument pod cover and auxilliary gauge coveer are needed along with most of the soft vinyl parts on the inside.

The fuel pump runs and the odor coming from the tank filler doesn't smell like old foul gasoline.  Ray and I got it to fire off and run as long as I sprayed carb cleaner into the intake.  It didn't sound bad, but with the muffler missing, it was difficult to really hear the internals of the engine.  BUT, it does start and run.

This week I was notified of an 87 GT that was on a foreclosed property in Villa Rica.  The cleanup company was planning to send it to the crusher.  I made arrangements to get the car on behalf of the club and Ron came in from Huntsville to help.  We found it had been wrecked badly in the rear and the front wheels were turned in different directions.  It couldn't be towed with Roger's tow dolly.

We went to see the car and though it was in a side shelter of a barn, it was in horrible condition.  It's probably been there for over 20 years.  It was difficult to tell that it was a white car or that it had a sunroof.  Someone had already been into the car and taken some of the gauges and trim.  All body panels forward of the left rear corner were not damaged.

Thanks to Mr. Herb Franklin of Franklin Builders, we were allowed to remove some of the items from the car that we think we can use on the Joel Project.  While removing the washer and overflow tanks, we were surprised to find that the car was still filled with antifreeze.

We collected the VIN and other information for the 87 Fiero Registry so a Death Certificate can be issued.   :'(

Howdy,

My '87 GT has been totaled.  The engine compartment is fine.  See here for pictures: https://plus.google.com/photos/101244603559962497427/albums/5971781930177826577 (https://plus.google.com/photos/101244603559962497427/albums/5971781930177826577)

I'd like to donate parts/engine to the Joel Project, but I'm already taking a financial hit with the car/insurance.

Is donating the remains to the Georgia Fiero Club tax deductible if I buy the car back from State Farm?
Or, will the Club reimburse me for buying the car back?
Will someone come and get it?  I don't have anywhere to store a wreck.

My goal is to do what I can to help-out, but not if it doesn't make financial sense.

Had we been able to retrieve the 87 GT in Villa Rica, we had a place to keep it.  It may be that we could keep this one in the same place.  They also have a trailer to haul it on.  The question is How do we get it onto the trailer.  If the impound yard has a track hoe, bars could be run through the windows and lift it onto the trailer.  Getting it off would be pretty simple.  Tie it to something and drive out from under it.

After the April 12 meeting, it was pretty much decided that the original Joel Project and the Joel 2 car will be going by the wayside.  Everyone felt that the cars were far beyond what could be quickly, economically and safely be put back on the road.

Thanks to Mike Barr, we have two other vehicles to work with and they will soon be transported to the Atlanta area.  The Joel 2, an 86SE will be parted out with proceeds to be used for the new vehicles.

Yesterday evening, I briefly spoke with John Harbour (johnyrottin) who donated and started the original Joel Project.  It's also agreed that the original car should be parted out for anything that remains, including the good engine, transmission and cradle.  Further details have to be worked out as to how the proceeds will be used.

Randy & I plan to move the red car from Charlie's tomorrow.

As far as getting the other cars I should be open any weekend except this coming Sunday.

Has anything been decided about picking up the 2 88's?  We need to give Mike some notice.

Scott I guess we need to decide if we are traveling this Saturday?

I will need to rent a car carrier and take the wheels off of the Red donor Friday.

Where are the cars going? Both to Charlies?

Scott is Saturday good? Who all wants to ride with Scott or I.?

Seems like a whole day event too right?

IF we know something by tomorrow evening, maybe we won't interrupt any plans Mike may have.
IF we can get Roger's tow dolly, I can tow it over on Friday when I meet Randy to deliver the engine hoist.
IF Scott can acquire that car hauler again, we can bring back one car on it.
IF someone will take the club courtesy car, I can take one of the cars.  Probably the Formula.
IF anyone would like to go along, there should be plenty of room with all the 5 passenger tow vehicles.  Some muscle will be needed to get these non-running cars up on the tow apparatus.

Ron said he could take one of the cars out in Powder Springs.  (I think) Pat said he could take one of the cars.  The GT should be as accessible to everyone as possible since that's the first one we will concentrate our efforts on.

You can rent a tow dolly.

U-Haul won't rent anything to you if you're towing it with an Explorer Sport Trac.  I've already tried.  Company Policy.  They don't know why, just Company Policy.  Last time, I had to take the Dakota down to get the dolly, then swapped it over to the Sport Trac when I got home.  When I was finished, I hooked it back to the Dakota and returned it.

It's a go for this Saturday, April 26.  We have vehicles and transport apparatus.  We need folks to help out with getting them onto the trailers if we can't get them started.  Also people to keep people company if you just want to ride along.  It's an all day trip, so bring along an extra pair of Depends.

Scott, Ray and I will be meeting on Canton Hwy (Hwy. 20) near the Cherokee/Forsyth County Line and pulling out around 7:30 AM Saturday morning.

We should meet up with Randy in Chatsworth on US 411 at around 8:30-9:00.  That should put us into Maryville, Tn. around Noon.  There is an AutoZone on US 411, just north of town where we can meet in Chatsworth.

They both say they've got plenty of room if anyone would like to go along to help out.

GT safely placed in Rons Drive way. I kept the Rims for now, 3 rears are on the GT and one front, and 3 front and one rear is with me. I will get them to Rons when I go over to work on it with him.

I left the key in the ignition, and the spares in the ashtray. The paper work is still in the car as well.

I was not able to replace the Automatic cable back in the bracket so that it is properly linked to the Shifter in the cabin. I placed chocks behind the wheels and made sure it was in park.

I work out that way and if you need help with moving the car let me know.  I am about 20 miles north of Ron.

A very long, but productive day, yesterday.  We picked up Mike's 88 GT and Formula and got them safely and securely back to Georgia.  The GT is at Ron's house in Powder Springs and the Formula will be at my house.  First focus will be the 88 GT since it's the car that will be donated.  Here's a couple of pictures that Scott took as we were about to head home.

I have spoken with John Harbour, originator of the Joel Project and owner of the car we presently have stored at ThaDriver's.  I've told him that the car is too far gone and will be too time consuming to finish.  I told him we are abandoning the project so he said that whatever is salvageable can be sold.  The money will go to John or to a charity of his choice.  Essentially all that's there is the front and rear fascias, the hood, roof and rear clip, and a 2.8 engine with roller rockers, 4-speed transmission and new clutch assembly on an 84 cradle.
