Title: Fiero documents?

I was going to look at the document about Quad 4 in a Fiero, but the document seems to have gone AWOL.

The SD4 documents make good reading--especially with the illustrations.  Good to know that that can still be done.

It says to change the oil and filter every 30,000 miles.  I'm not familiar with the Quad 4 engine, but isn't that off by a factor of 10?

I'm also curious why this engine is more desirable than other engines, at only 180 HP.  Is it the higher RPMs?

The doc is from an install manual I got from IRM in ~1998. This was while the Ecotec was only on paper, if even that.
Technology marches on.

I missed the 30000 mile thing. I'm sure it was supposed to be 3K.

IMHO, a Quad 4 is the way to go given the massive  :o fuel tank in Fieros and the ability of a modern 4 to produce over 200 HP.  It also matches my slow style of driving better than a 150mph capable V8.

Doesn't mean I'll swap my engine.  But if I ever have to I'd think long and hard about a 4 with a 6 speed,like the one's found in the Vibe and (maybe?) HHRs.

Now you have me wondering...  What is the top speed of a 5-speed/2.8?  Theoretical, of course?  More than 125MPH.  At least, the 3-speed auto will do more than 125MPH.

For a V8, I'd figure that the transmission would have a lot to do with the top speed.

I love my Fieros. We all do. So it is understandable when people want to believe that they have actually done 150mph in their stock Fieros. Nice dream.
But if we are going to have rational discussions we need to know the facts.

here they are:

A)1984 Fiero 4-cylinder, 4-speed manual from Sept 1983 Road & Track Magazine

0-60 in 11.6 sec with a top speed of 103mph (tested curb weight 2770)

Car and Driver did a similar test and came up 0-60 in 10.9 sec with a top speed of 104mph (testd curb weight 2581 - that's bare bones folks)

B) 1985 Fiero 6-cylinder, 4-speed manual from Nov 1984 Road & Track magazine.

0-60 in 8.4 sec with a top speed of 125mph (tested curb weight 2740)

Car and Driver did a similar test and came up 0-60 in 8.2 sec with a top speed of 119mph (testd curb weight 2910 - that's loaded)

C) 1986 Fiero 6-cylinder (fastback), 4-speed manual from Aug 1986 Road & Track magazine.

0-60 in 7.5 sec with a top speed of 123mph (tested curb weight 2860)

D) 1987 Fiero 6-cylinder, 5-speed manual from Mar 1987 Automobile magazine.

0-60 in 7.7 sec with a top speed of 123mph (tested curb weight 2825)

E) 1988 Fiero 6-cylinder (Formula), 5-speed manual from Oct 1987 Road & Track magazine.

0-60 in 8.0 sec with a top speed of 125mph (tested curb weight 2775)


The bottom line is that the Formula is the Fastest Fiero ever built. It has a top speed of 125 (and I have never done it, my fastest time in a stock Formula is 123.77).

I guess the .5sec difference between C (three fastest 0-60mph time) and E (the fastest top speed) must be because of the burn out at three beginning of the run?

The Quad 4, by now, is fairly ancient technology. They were also infamous, in some years, for blowing head gaskets.
I would be way more inclined to swap in an Ecotec. I believe they were available with a 6 speed (F40.) Even if the 5 speed was the best they came with, it was still the F23.
FWIW, I saw a pictorial/exploded view of an Ecotec. It's constructed like a tank.
