Title: Slack in accelerator cable?

Is there a way to tighten the gas cable on an 88 Duke?
Gas pedal does not react immediately when pressed. I noticed a lot of slack on the cable in the back.
Can it be adjusted?

The Ogre mentioned something about this, but I don't recall if he offered a solution, or just that the situation exixts, as you discovered. I'll see if I can find a link.

On my Indy mine was always spongy & stiff - I assumed it was stretched & maybe shreading. Then one day it just quit working & I pulled over to the side of the road thinking "this is it - it finally broke". A guy on a bike came by & we checked it out & he worked the gas pedal for me & it turned out the cable housing had melted & was just allowing the pedal to take out the slack & not move the throttle body. A quick fix on the side of the road & I was able to get it home. The fix? I had an old tag & a pair of pliers in the trunk so I bent/tore off a piece of the tag & wrapped it around that section of the housing.
Now it has a new cable & I made a heat shield from a piece of flexible aluminum duct to wrap around it, so hopefully it won't happen again.
So check out your housing where it goes over the exhaust manifold.  ::)

Pretty much made of "unobtainium".

87-88 Duke throttle cables are the cable of choice for most 4.9 swaps. Ed (Fiero Factory) was having a hard time finding them, ten years ago.

This device is actually for larger cables like emergency brakes, but I have seen a very small one.  Small ones might be available at a hobby or bike shop.  To use one of these near the throttle body, one would need to check carefully for clearance and possible binding/lockup.  The way this is displayed is deceptive.  The hook is actually turned so that it runs in the slot of the body.  The cable is positioned across the two corners and the hook pulls down on the cable with the hook moving downward through the slotted area.

Remove the nuts from the hook and remove the hook from the body.  Reinsert the hook opposite of what it is in the picture but turn it sideways and install the nuts onto the hook.  The cable runs straight across the bradded corners.  The nuts on the bottom of the hook are tightened and that pulls the hook down on the cable.

The throttle body changed in 87 (which continued in 88.)
