Title: Coming to Georgia...
Post by: GTRS Fiero on June 13, 2017, 07:12:29 pm
A sister-in-law is making her first trip to the US tomorrow.  Warner Bros is putting her up at the Ritz in Atlanta, GA for a media event with Dwayne Johnson.

Coming from a tropical country, it was amusing that she was worried about a coat for the cold.  They have no sales tax there, and don't do tips.  I've advised her that her cell phone won't work, her cell charger won't work, and wifi at the Ritz probably isn't free.

How did she score that?

Be sure to tell her that she shouldn't go wandering around alone at night.  Even though it's the heart of downtown, there can still be problems.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll pass it along.

This is part of her job.  They send her all over.  She works for Cinema Online.

Many cell chargers are tolerant of any input voltage from 100-250 volts, 50 or 60Hz. All they need is a plug adapter. Read the fine print on the charger for the input voltage supported.
If her phone is unlocked, she can get a SIM card and one of the pay-as-you-go plans to use it here.

She is only here for two nights.  We told her to use the computers in the lobby.  Not really worth buying an adapter.  Heck, mine came with adapters, but I lost the adapters.

There should be USB ports in the airports, and often in the hotel rooms.  She can just plug her cable into the USB ports.  Except for high-end phones and some tablets, this should work.

Only free from her work obligations on Friday.  The Zoo & Aquarium are expensive.

My wife suggested Coco Cola World.  I suggested the Delta Flight Museum, Olympic Park, Underground Atlanta, and the federal reserve.  Wrong day for touring the governor's mansion, but could visit the state capitol.  Could maybe watch a movie in Central Park.

Of course, raining tonight.

Underground Atlanta, go with an escort.  Schools out and groups of kids hang out there.  It has been known for occasional gang activity.  Olympic Park is nice.  The Westin Plaza, the big round building has the Sundial Restaurant on top.  Sometimes referred to as the Flying Saucer Restaurant.  It rotates 360* once an hour, giving one a panoramic view of the city.

If she visits the Atlanta Aquarium, there's a great seafood restaurant on the corner near the main entrance.  Legal Seafood.  Melanie and I have made several 40 mile trips down there just for their fresh seafood.  They don't open until 11.

About 2 blocks away is Atlanta Cruisers.  The website says they give 2 hour tours of Atlanta sites in a chauffeured small electric car.

Tell her to take pictures so you can post them.

All that stuff is very near the Ritz.  Google Maps shows the relative location to the Ritz.  That's how I found the Atlanta Cruisers Electric Car and Segway Tours.

Melanie and I are Northeast of downtown Atlanta, just off the I-85 corridor.  Roger is a little further out and TopNotch is a little closer on this side of town.

I didn't include her comments with the pictures, because the comments weren't in English, but here are some other comments:
”Humongous ATL airport.”

”The TSA really love[ s] yelling at people...”

”I love how everyone was so helpful and nice in the city...”

”People in Atlanta don't use trains?  Because there were definitely was [fewer] people taking the trains...The [cars] were pretty much empty.”

”I noticed...there were a lot of abandoned building[ s] (adorned with graffiti to boot).

EDIT: Upped the size for GrannyLinda.

I just hope she has a great time.

The TSA can really be a PITA anywhere but I've learned to, and love to ask the TSA for a 'pat down' search.
Maybe she can find time for a tour of the FOX Theatre as well.

She just had Friday to tour.  I gathered that she had a good time.  A lot of things were overwhelming, and a 12-hour jet lag didn't help.  She had to stay up until after midnight with the studio.

She was in Qatar, this morning, and should be on the other side of the world now.  She'll be in Australia next week, then in India in a few weeks, then who knows?  The Atlanta trip was a last-minute thing.

She comes from an upbringing/culture that doesn't ask questions.  Getting her to go ask the concierge ANYTHING was difficult.

Apparently, I'm intimidating, but even the menus here can be intimidating.  For example, at the sub shop, they ask what kind of bread (providing 6+ options), then the meat (6+ options), then the cheese (6+ options), etc.  By the time they get to the cheese, some people are ready to start a WAR.  Also, we serve meals without rice (how dare we), and rice often isn't on the menu.  Then there's the drink situation.  Here, when we want a drink, we don't want a shot-glass half full; we want a 32-oz or bigger.  Over there, I used to order my food with 6 glasses of OJ, and 6 of milk, just to get me started.  They're not used to having to answer questions about how the meat should be cooked, or what sides.  They state what they want, and eat what's served.  They don't complain if undercooked, or if the order isn't right.  I don't like ice in my drink.  It is very difficult there to customize your order.  Getting a drink served without ice is nearly impossible.  Oh, and trust me--you don't want ice in your drink in some countries.  The water used to make the ice isn't safe to drink.

Oh, and they like to eat off other people's plates.  If they take food off my plate, I'm done.

As much as I can't imagine eating fries without salt, they do not like salt on their fries.  At least, not as much as we use.  A lot of the food is too salty.

Yogurt they eat plain.  Blah!  I told her not to stir it.

It's fine, though.  A few small meals never hurt.

I don't kmow her nationality and it's too late now but there is an uppity Thai restaurant very near The Ritz Carlton. Just about a block away.

Was trying to get her to eat food she doesn't normally eat.  She's had Thai and Vietnamese.

BTW, for you seafood eaters, what parts of the fish do you eat?
Title: Re: Coming to Georgia...
Post by: Roger on June 17, 2017, 08:45:02 pm
Shellfish...everything but the shell. Fish...NO HEADS and especially, NO EYES. I don't care for my food to be looking back at me. Crabs, just the legs and claws.
NEVER, EVER have ANY drink in Mexico that has ice in it. And don't even attempt to order a Corona there unless you want to be laughed at and humiliated. (I don't like it anyway and agree with them...'Donkey P!$$)

That's one heck of an itinerary she has. I would certainly hope it pays well.
Try grabbing thick (think Shag) rug with your toes for relief of jet lag. Works for me.

True story.  Many years ago, when my wife and I were dating, we went to eat at an uppity Vietnamese or Thai restaurant.  I don't remember which.  Anyway, my wife ordered a fish.  It came.  The whole foot-long fish, cooked whole.  She ate far more than I would have.  I uncomfortably watched someone at another table eat the eyes, head, etc.  My wife didn't, thankfully, but she later admitted she would normally have eaten the head, only refraining then for my benefit.  Yeah, when your meal is eyeballing you with a ”why me?” look on one side, and ”oh no, I'm dinner” look in the other eye, it's disconcerting.  I do not like slimy food.

Later on, I found out their fish came from across the street at the international food market, where dead fish sit rotting and stinking in unrefrigerated heaps.  The odor of dead fish permeates that place.

I like Thai Tea.  That's about it.

Tonight, we ate at IHOP.  I compared the menu there to the Asian IHOP.  Mostly nothing in common.  I would ask who eats greasy noodles drowned in soy, but obviously they do.

The job pays poorly, but has perks.  Airfare, meals, movies, hotel, etc are paid for, plus spending money.

I've heard of the rug trick.  I sleep on the plane, and just make sure to stay active during daytime.  Of course, when I came back last time, I went straight back to work.  I could DO OK, but my speech was gibberish.  Not good.  I'm paid to think, so I always have to bring my A game.  She is probably supposed to look alert.  Dunno how that went for her.

She said there were lots of homeless people by Peachtree Station.  She was amazed at the variety of colors of the building construction (grey concrete is used there).  Also, the quantity of liquor stores was new to her (not common in Muslim countries).  Somewhere, she found a long escalator that went way up a tunnel.  The frequency of abandoned warehouses was new to her.  I'll post more pics shortly.

She covered a lot of territory.  I think that long escalator is in the MARTA transit station.  I don't remember which.  Maybe the Five Points station which was very near The Hilton.  The North-South line goes underground up on the north side in the Brookwood area and doesn't emerge until the south side of the downtown area near West End.

I bought a TV dinner at an Aldi store once -- Salisbury steak. When I cooked it, I found that the steak part contained only gravy. That was the last time I ever bought something at Aldi.

At least you got gravy.  I bought one at Ingles, microwaved it, and when I removed the seal, the Salsbury Steak was less than a quarter inch thick, had no juice or gravy in the compartment, and had the consistency of dried leather.  The mashed potatoes was just a small hard lump with no moisture.  Maybe it was freeze-dried and I should have soaked it in water before cooking.

Milk, eggs, veggies, etc are much cheaper and better quality.

Vegetables haven't been very good at the Winder store.  Never tried their meats, but I buy their 30 oz cans of Classic Roast coffee for $5.49.  To me it's comparable to Folgers in flavor, but much much cheaper than their little 26 oz. tubs.  Milk and cereal and eggs are very low priced and very good.  I wasn't aware, but today I passed by a local Aldi's distribution warehouse.  Like Publix, they have a very localized distribution center.

I bought a pair of cycling shoes from them.... The guy in the trendy treader shop told me what a waste of money (£14.99) they were.....I have done many 1000s of miles in them, very comfy, living in them when cycle touring.  Still going.

Vs a pair of posh £75 shoes that would no doubt of fallen apart by now.
