Title: Automoda convertible for sale.
Post by: Raydar on February 24, 2015, 06:17:49 pm
Several of you have seen this car.

The back story is, a friend of mine bought this from a sometime/former club member about a year ago. It quit on him while he was driving it home. Started blowing fuel pump fuses.
He dragged it to his work place with the intent of fixing it, when he had the time and money. I even offered to help him with it, but he was always busy with work.
He eventually got one of the mechanics at his work to replace the pump, but could never get it to start or run, afterwards.
He got tired of towing the car around and needed money worse than he needed the car. He called me up and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I had it towed home.

It now starts and runs. It has new Rodney Dickman master and slave clutch cylinders.
The brakes have been bled and work properly.
All it needs is an exhaust header, some minor trim work, maybe a carb clean/rebuild, and an oil change for the engine and tranny, to make it completely driveable.

Why am I selling it?
I really don't care anything about having a droptop. As I mentioned, I bought it to help out a friend, and it just doesn't speak to my soul.

So... what's the deal?
I would really like to sell this car as a roller.
I would like to keep the drivetrain and put it in something else. I am asking $3500 for the car, without the drivetrain. Keep in mind that the Automoda kit was nearly that much, just by itself. And try to find one, today.

The car itself has less than 20K on the odo, and looks it. Everything in the interior that is not covered in leather is covered in carpet. It's really quite nice. The car is not perfect, but it's nice.

I had thought about putting a different engine in it (a 3.4 or a 4.9, maybe. It would make the perfect cruising car.) But I figured that would put it out of more peoples' reach, and an engine choice can be a very personal (sometimes polarizing) thing, anyway.

I will sell it, like it sits, with the drivetrain, for $5500. It'll be more if I replace the header. (That price is because I really want to keep the engine, but if I'm offered that, I'll take it.)

I've mentioned this to a couple of people on Pennocks, but one guy just wants it to part out, and the other guy's wife "shot him the look" when he mentioned getting another Fiero.
I'd really rather that someone in our club got it, anyway. If you want to buy it and part it out, please just don't tell me about it. It's way too nice for that.

I will also consider a trade for an 88. (Both cars as "rollers".) Must be in very good condition, as far as body and interior. Engine can be toast. Would prefer a manual.

I can take pics of anything about the car, by request. Just let me know.
Lots more pics (and more history) in this thread...

I considered trading my '88 for a few minutes.

Would like to see this car in person.

If you want to come and look, I'll PM directions. I'm in Douglasville. About 6 miles north of I-20.
Or... as soon as I get the exhaust system sorted out, I'll drive it to the next club meeting. The header is all it really needs.
Thanks for looking and commenting.

I'm going to give it a few more days, then post it up on Pennocks.
Really would like it to stay local, and belong to someone in the club. :)

Why don't you run it in the Dublin parade?

Park it afterward with a For Sale sign.

Last chance.
A guy out of state (way out of state) sent me a message, offering to buy the car as a roller. I'm probably going to take him up on it.
Want to give the folks in the club one more opportunity... Roller or completed. Either way.
(Just got it running reliably, this weekend. It's loud and it's fast. :D )

Still have this. $5K, running. Running well. New Holley carb and thermal coated Hooker header. Done right. Not half azzed.
New master cylinder, calipers and pads. Brakes are still spongy.  Don't have time to mess with it.
It's in my way. Have to put a clutch in my fastback for RFTH.
Somebody buy this...

OMG! STOP!  YOU'RE KILLING ME RIGHT NOW!  WHY? Bring it to the Ww car ceremony on the 1st. I've got to see this. Pgackerman and I where talking about this just yesterday, and when he said he thought it was gone already, the mood in the room changed like when the conversation is about a friend passing.
I don't have the wife for this, but I wish you well on your sale.
If I convince her that I have to have this car, or I'll die, then I'll be first in line!

Wait, what happened to the double deuce shorty intake and carbs?  :o

The double deuce shorty intake is mostly nestled safely in a box under my workbench.
One of the Dellortos is fanorked. Needs rebuilt. (The idle circuit is plugged.)
I put the Holley on until I got those sorted.
For my asking price, they'll come with the car. Don't have time to rebuild them. (Check eBay. They aren't cheap. Rebuild kits are.)

As for driving it to Augusta, the brakes are not sorted. I'm not comfortable driving it like it is. Sorry.
(I really suspect that the rears being out of adjustment might be part of the problem, but again, I don't have time to mess with them, any time soon. All my experience is with 88s. This is a learning curve for me. At worst, my new/rebuilt Advance Auto master cylinder may be bad. It acts just like the one I replaced.)

(Unfortunately, I will miss the WW ceremony. I have a family commitment that I cannot get around.)

hey radar I guess this car would be over my head considering I`m non-mechanically inclined, what you think?   oldone in c`ville

For what it is, it's actually dead simple. The computer and EFI are completely non-existent.
Having said that, there is very little "stock" about anything on the car. There are no service manuals that cover it "as built".
There is probably documentation of the distributor and MSD box, out on the web. (I actually found some MSD info.)
And a Holley is about as simple as you can get, in terms of carbs. But it was a steep learning curve for me.

To directly answer your question, I wouldn't recommend it in your case. Not that I'm afraid that it would break. Just that I'd hate to see it sit, unused, if it did. Nothing about the car is intuitive.
Good to see you. Been a while.
