Title: Monthly Cruise-Ins at Sonic or Dairy Queen
Post by: Fierofool on December 12, 2015, 08:19:49 pm
Members present at the December 2015 meeting discussed and voted on a monthly Cruise-In at a Sonic Restaurant or Dairy Queen Restaurant.

We will meet at a different location at 12 noon on the 4th Saturday of each month, beginning January 23, 2016.  We will begin on the East Side of Georgia, working our way around the northern half of Georgia, north of a line roughly between Augusta and Columbus.

The selected location for January 2016 is
Sonic Restaurant
3980 GA 17Alt, Eastanollee, GA 30538   (Toccoa)

It's located about 5 miles north of I-85 Exit 173 on Ga. Hwy 17 at the intersection of Business and By-pass 17, at the front of the WalMart SuperCenter.   Though it faces Hwy 17, the entrance is off WalMart Court.

All Fiero Enthusiasts and 2-passenger sports car enthusiasts are invited to join us.

May I suggest a Cruise-In at Yesterday's Cafe in Greensboro, GA?

Greensboro is roughly an hour from the CSRA (GA Fiero Club Far East), Eastern Atlanta, and even closer to Athens.  No Sonic, but I've eaten at Yesterday's Cafe in Rutledge and highly recommend the buttermilk pie.   There's a DQ on the way into Greensboro from I-20.

Now to find the time...

We will be at a different location each month, moving clockwise around the state.  Our hope is that our members will attend more than just the location at their front door.  Every location will be at least a two hour drive for us in the Atlanta area.  The Toccoa or suggested Greensboro location will be at least seven hours for ronzrx.

The hope is to expose our cars to more of the public and attract new members.  The more cars we have, the more visible we are.  I'd hate to schedule one in Augusta and only two cars showed up because everyone up here felt it was too far to drive. We understand that not everyone can attend all but we hope most will attend at least half of them.

I plan to hit larger cities because there is more exposure and probably more Fieros.

I spoke with the assistant general manager today (Manager is out of town) and they are very receptive to us meeting there.  They are going to put up a notice that Georgia Fieros invites all sports cars to attend a cruise in on January 23 at 12 Noon.  This will go up on their big marquee sometime around the second week of January, so the event should get a lot of exposure.

I don't think so but if you search the address on Google maps and do a street view you should be able to see.  I'm at church right now and can't check for you.

I want to toss this idea out and see what anyone thinks.

Instead of going clockwise from our starting point in Toccoa, so that the people on the west side of the state don't have to travel so far each month, then later in the year, it's the east side of the state that has to travel the distance, what about the February meeting being somewhere on the west side, then March on the SE side of Georgia, May on the NW side, and so on.  That way every other month, it would be closer to a broader spectrum of our members.

For this to be successful, it's going to take more than 1 or 2 cars showing up at each event.  People may just drive on by but if there's 4, 5, o5 6 Fieros sitting there, we will be more visible and maybe stir some interest.

Who was the person that suggested this in the survey.  Chime in with your thoughts, please.

Fiero gatherings are a great idea.  But honestly, I'm not going to drive 2+ hours each way for Sonic/DQ.

Instead of large gatherings, may I suggest concentrating on small, four or more car gatherings that are only an hour-or-so away from a group?  Awhile back I plotted the cities where many of the active members are located.  Not surprisingly, the center of gravity was near Atlanta.

This gives us the opportunity to, as FieroFool said, have gatherings.  I suggest we try to plot them within an hour North, South, East, and West of Atlanta.  Without actually checking distances, Gainesville, Greensboro, Macon, Rome, etc would be good locations.  I'm sure there are more.

Arrange a meeting when you have 4 commitments.

Anyone up for Greensboro between Christmas & New Years or some time in January?

Not knowing the intent of the original poster's suggestion, we thought it a good opportunity to bring in new members from outlying areas.  Our members over the years have ranged from Fayetteville, Charlotte, Vale, Hendersonville, Miller Creek, and Murphy, NC, southward through Salem and Aikens, SC, Augusta to Macon to Columbus to Douglasville, Cartersville, Canton, Waleska to Ringgold to Calhoun, Ga, to Chattanooga, Athens and Niota, Tn.  And don't forget Huntsville and Athens, Alabama.  All of people regularly attended monthly meetings and events and all were more than an hour away.  They have slowly dwindled away due to selling their Fieros or family or financial matters.

We've always held our meetings on the outskirts of Atlanta, at a set location so that anyone newly interested will know where they can meet up with us.  Moving the regular meeting around each month would probably lose more attendees than we would gain.  We know that there are lots of Fieros in Georgia and they aren't just centered in the Atlanta area.  This can be confirmed by the number of sightings in the thread "Have you seen a Fiero, Today".  Some know about Georgia Fieros but only want to be involved with us when they need something.  They don't come back until they need something else.  Others know of us but just aren't joiners or we're beneath their status.  Puzzles me because they also drive Fieros.

Most of us started out with our Fieros not being in the best of cosmetic or mechanical condition.  That need for parts and help has brought most of our members together in a common comradeship.  Sure, I can drive one of my Fieros less than an hour and give it a good workout on some curves.  Lots of fun.  Most of us up this way can do the same, but it's much more fun to do it with a half dozen or more, or just to take a nice cruise together up the interstate to meet other Fiero owners or to visit some historical or tourist site.

We felt that the Sonics were a place that doesn't mind car people hanging out and milling around.  You can't do that at a Cracker Barrel or Golden Corral.  Maybe we'll also get around to hitting The Varsity in the Downtown Atlanta and Athens or Norcross, Ga. areas, too.

Yesterday, I spoke with the General Manager at the Sonic.  She said that there were local merchants that may provide door prizes for the attendees.  I will see if I can elicit the same from the other locations (not necessarily Sonic or DQ) as we rotate around the state, including something in the Augusta area.

As your president for this year, I have been trying to come up with a way to grow membership. We own and drive a very unique car. This ideal of a cruise - in is something that I have been wanting to do for a while. That Sonic is one of the few places that will let a club hang around for a few hours is one of the reasons that it was chosen to meet at for these cruises. Most fast food places that I know of ( or sit down type places for that matter) would rather you came in , got your food and left as turn around is where they make their money. I , as president, chose to use this as a way to get people to see our cars on the road. I have posted this on 4 different facebook pages and it is also posted on Pennocks. Get the cars out, let others see them, hopefully , other Fiero owners will see us and join us for the day and maybe join our club. Getting out with your car and driving it will let others know that Fieros are still out there.

Is this still "a go"?
Some entities are predicting 1-2" of snow in NE Georgia.

Obviously, stuff can change. Are we just going to play it by ear?
Does anyone in the club live up in that area, who can be a "set of eyes" for us, that morning?

How about I get them to put "Snow Date Feb. 27"?  We'll play it by ear and make the decision on Friday?  The Rome Sonic General Manager hasn't sshown much interest.  She's always in a meeting or is busy at the moment and will call me back.  This has been going on for 5 days.  I've called every day except today.

I was just thinking out loud, more than anything.

I didn't mean to come off as sounding snippy.  Yesterday was a trying day.

The forecast has been all over the place from near 50* and sunny to whatever it was last night.  Snow, I think for Toccoa.  I don't want anyone hitting a patch of ice and losing control.  They don't have an inside dining area, so we would also be sitting outside in the elements.
Title: Re: Monthly Cruise-Ins at Sonic or Dairy Queen

You didn't come off snippy at all.
More like me, rambling... :D

Maybe it won't snow. Or maybe we'll get a foot.
Probably depends upon who you want to listen to, right up until it happens.

Hope everything is going okay. I'll call you, if Toccoa is cancelled, if not before.

According to the weatherbug, there is a 50% chance of snow. Who's for waiting to see what it does Friday night to make a decision?

I talked to the manager and she says they're saying that if it isn't sowing at the time, there is a good chance of accumulation Friday night into Saturday morning.  She gave me her cell number to find out what their local forecast is, as of Friday mid day to 6pm.  If the forecast is still for winter precip of any kind, we'll reschedule.  She's up to that so that she can arrange her worker schedule.

So, if we reschedule, what would you all prefer....
A. A week from Saturday (long range forecast is good for then).
B. A month from now.

If we can wait a month, Tammy can still possibly come with me. Next weekend she can't.
That's my only constraint. Other than that I don't care. Whatever works for everyone else, really.

Forecast for Toccoa Friday night thru Saturday morning calls for up to 3/4 inches of ice and 3 inches of snow.  Since Rome looks out of the picture let's schedule Toccoa for February 27.

An insurance glitch has complicated my schedule and I will be preoccupied for a while and won't be able to work on this project.

Can the person who suggested it step up and take over?

I'm in favor of rescheduling as well. Better be safe than sorry. I know these cars are touted as one of the safest, but I prefer not to test mine out. I'll leave that to the dummies.
Title: Re: Monthly Cruise-Ins at Sonic or Dairy Queen

I've been dummied 3 times.  The first time at about 70 mph when I hit black ice on I-85.  The other two at about 35 mph in snow on a mountain road.  A precise alignment is necessary when driving a Fiero on slick roads, whether it be ice, snow or rain.

We want Fieros to come but we also want them to be driven home.  But then we could go just down the street and stay at the Holiday Inn.  That makes everything better.

Sprint? That would just kill me outright...

I think the Fiero Store called it a console tray. Check the mall on Pennocks. Someone had one for sale, recently. Think it was brown, so you'd have to paint it.

What I noticed was the accessory glove box on the passenger side.  A nice addition for bulkier items that won't fit into the door or console pockets.  I think those aren't being made any more.

They're making them again? Awesome! I was thinking they were out of production.

Yeah... the glove box is one of the more useful things I've found, as well.
Unfortunately, those are done, too.
Paul Vargyas was doing a similar one, but he suddenly stopped production. I sort of got the idea that people on Pennocks were b*tching about the price, so he said "screw it". He never said that in so many words, however.

I think Paul bites his tongue a lot.  He told me that there were a lot of reasons he stopped.  He didn't mention people complaining, but led me to believe that some sort of repairs to the equipment were needed.  I think it was a matter of too much work.  His version was the better version, though.

I believe this may become a new product offered by slammed.  It has been discussed in one of her threads about a modern upgraded interior.

Slammed seems to be "choking" on taillight lens covers, again. *sigh*

That is full on drama.

I meant the Sonic thing.  Did they go around the state?

I'm curious how participation went.  3 hours' drive would probably be the max I'd drive, but probably not to a Sonic.  Other people have different circumstances.

The first one had about a dozen cars. After that, they kind of dwindled. 5-6 cars.
Longest I ever had to drive was about 2 hours.
We had one guy drive from Macon to NE Georgia, and another drove from Huntsville AL.
tshark... How far would you have to drive to attend?

In general, about 8.5 hours' drive.

So, there were more than just the one?

Some of the Sonics weren't receptive to a cruise in.  We changed to DQ Grill and Chill for a little better food and indoor dining in case of bad weather.  All DQ's were glad to have us.  The last cruise in was August because of RFTH in September and because we only had 3 members show up.

We did move them around the state so some members didn't always have to drive long distances each time, and go get exposure in different areas.

It was really cool that the manager at that one Sonic really seemed to want you there.

Nothing dto do with Fieros, but another group I hang out with picks different places after every performance.  One time it was a pizza place nearby; this last time, it was also a pizza place; the time before it was a banquet hall.  I have noticed that each place they pick is family-owned.  No place was a chain.  Each owner was a good, solid person, and the food was great (except this last place).  At a few places, the owner personally thanked us for coming.  My point is, it may be better not to use chain restaurants.  I like the family restaurants, anyway.

There is a place I'd love to get to, called Galleria del Paco, or some such.  If each place was a destination, but on an off day, results may be better.  Not 8 hours, but I'd probably go further for such a place.  It would have to be a day trip, for me.  If it put extra load on my wife, I couldn't do it.

We had an evwnt where we parked at a school next door, but ate at the restaurant.  That was a DQ.  We also did a Waffle House and a Burger King.  Chains, but we just descended on them.

As a lazy member I'll fess-up that I don't want to drive more than 1.5 hours away; 2 hours on VERY special occasions.  Given that I live near Augusta, you're unlikely to see me very often.

Maybe we can have East Side of Atlanta Cruise-ins/Drives and North/South/West Side Cruise-ins/Drives?

Does the 1.5-2 hour limit apply to riding along with someone, also?

Yes.  It's not the drive.  It's the time away from family.

We all work and have school, so weekends are the best family time.  I feel greedy taking an entire day.

Bring the family (no Fiero).  I've done this.

I've done it, too.  When my daughter was in school and the wife was working, they would drive up on Friday afternoon to our hotel and one of them would ride with me on the run on Saturday.  Usually my daughter because my wife and her Dramamine always helped me do the scouting and layout.  Once, they couldn't get there until Saturday, but spent the day enjoying the area until the group returned.

There's always a shorter way to get to our final destination when we use two hotels, which we are probably doing again this year.  Pigeon Forge will be our final destination and there's lots of stuff to do up there.  When we've stayed in the Clayton, Ga., Franklin, NC area many of the wives would get together and go up to the casino in Cherokee for the day

The Dublin St. Pat's Day Parade is March 18 and we're about to start putting together a commitment to drive in the parade again this year.  The young lady from my church who helps to carry the club banner comes down with her mom and dad and they spend the full weekend.

Probably not.  She and I have had that conversation.  Her Father is a Gwinnett County Police Department Training officer, rides a Harley and her tiny little Mother has a Gold Wing.  Summer wants a motorcycle.

It used to be that kids would get a chance to drive early.  I'm not suggesting that anyone let someone else's child drive, but we used to have a lot of fun, before we could get a license. Here, you can't get your bike license until after your car license.  Motorcycle is an endorsement.

I'm hoping my kids will be interested in/knowledgeable of cars, but I'm worried the future will ruin this for everyone.  Cars now are much harder to work on, and new laws prohibit working on a car in public view, more or less.

If the auto manufacturers have their way, unless it's something simple or mechanical like replenishing fluids, changing filters or brake pads, you won't be allowed to work on a car.  Any connection to the PCM will be proprietary and only authorized dealers will possess the software to do diagnostics.  A recent PFF thread spoke of how John Deere is already claiming that a farmer only rents his farm equipment and doesn't have a legal right to do PCM diagnostics.  If court cases uphold John Deere, it's likely that automakers will continue to pursue their claims to the same legal ownership.

And that's why I have older vehicles.  If the auto manufacturers keep it up, people will build their own.
