Title: Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade
Post by: Fierofool on January 13, 2009, 12:17:16 am
We've received our 8th invitation to drive in the Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 14.  The deadline for registering is Feb. 1.  You don't need to be a member, or from Georgia.  There is no entry fee for you.  If your car cleans up well, we'd like to have you in the parade.  This is on the day of the regular meeting, and the meeting is cancelled but we will return to the Galaxy Diner after the parade.

Please contact me so I can get a count of cars for the registration form.

Arg. So what's the worst scenario if you register and then can't get your car in? I'd love to be in it, but I'm not 100% sure it'll be ready by then; it's cuttin it close. Would it be a big no-no to do that?

Every year, we have people show up who didn't plan to attend, and we have people who drop out after I've submitted the application.  Nancy, the parade organizer, needs to have a count of the cars so she can plan for placement in the pre-staging areas.

When I submit the application, I have to tell her how many cars.  A variation of a few cars isn't a problem, but if we only submitted for 1 or 2 and 20 showed up, well you could see there may be a problem.

If we had to pay an entry fee, it would be an entirely different matter, as far as the club's concerned because it would be money wasted, but since we're a registered non-profit group, we get free entry.

Rizzi, how many cars?  All 3?  Heck, you could almost be a parade unto yourself.  Get 'em out and drive them before the parade to be sure they're ok.

The Solstice/Sky folks have already got their app submitted and will meet with us at the pre-staging area on Howell Mill Road to drive down to the parade staging area.

Pat has 2 cars that he may need drivers for if he doesn't get back in time from his daughter's wedding in Florida.  He will need at least 1 driver.  Contact him for information.

Hey Pat, do you need someone drive a car in the parade? (This is the only way that I have to contact him.) Scott

My daughter has postponed her wedding to a later date (it was to be on March 13), so it looks like I'll be able to drive at least one of my cars. Driving both would be tricky, so I'll need another driver to have both in the parade.

I'm going to be putting an effort in to getting my car presentable before the parade.

You can count me in assuming there are no major delays with getting it ready.

Good.  Doesn't matter what it looks like inside, as long as it shines up good on the outside.  Guess you're keepin' it?!

Here are the directions to where we will meet up prior to driving down to the parade area.  At this time, I don't know where they will stage us when we get downtown.  If I don't post it, I'll have maps when we get to this pre-staging area.

Preliminary Staging Area

Coming from North of Atlanta, on I-75, take Exit 252, Howell Mill Road.

At the end of the ramp, turn right onto Howell Mill Road, and get into the left lane.

Almost immediately, you will see a Kroger shopping center on your left.  This is the preliminary staging area.

Coming from East or West of Atlanta, on I-20, merge to I-75/85 North.
(Coming from I-75 South, you will

Great.  I bet he'll enjoy that.  Probably best to ride the rail in from Doraville.  Unless you know some secret spot, it'll be near impossible to find a parking place or even drive anywhere near the parade.

If you look at a map, we will probably be staged on Ralph McGill Blvd, on top of the bridge where it crosses over I-75/85.  It's right on the corner at Peachtree.  I think Peachtree station is up in that area.  If you do park at Doraville, you may be able to find a couple of cars that have empty passenger seats and you can ride in the parade.  Then we can drive you back to Doraville, on the way to the Diner.

Right now, I'm not sure I'm going to have two cars for the parade. The yellow car is acting up (see tech section). I hope I can get it fixed in time.

Great parade, kinda reminded me of the last one I attended, COLD, but a great time had by all. And I joined again this year. I paid my dues so now I'm a paid member.

Lots of fun! Even if it was colder than a witch's brass monkey.  ;D
The crowds were surprising. Way more people on the sidelines than I expected. I suppose the green beer (or other beverages of choice) helped, in that regard.

Good to see everybody again! Glad y'all came down.

Thanks for putting the pictures up, Pat.  Maybe some day I'll get my compute figured out.

Thabj you to:

Kevin, Ray, Don and Darrell, Raydar, Pat, Roger and Brenda, and Scott and especially to Robbie and Julio, Dan and Jeanne Bunker, Jack Cooke and Ron Robinson and his son for coming from out of state to be with us, even though they knew the weather wouldn't be very hospitable.  You're all a great bunch of people.

Also, a big thanks to Ray's daughter, Kayla and her friend Briana.  While we spent our time on Peachtree riding along in our warm cars, they were up front carrying the club banner.

Nice. The Dark Tower (aka: my place of employ) centered in the back ground.  <shudder>  ;D

All kidding aside, I can try to arrange for us to meet there in future years.
If anyone is interested, please let me know.
It's only a little more difficult to find than Kroger.

The only trouble is, the are no eating spots anywhere near.
At least Kroger has food, and bathrooms. And a restaurant across the parking lot.
