Title: Giant Radio Controlled Model Airplane
Post by: TopNotch on May 24, 2017, 03:53:16 pm
If you're going to the expense and trouble of building a model this big, why not just build the real thing?...

This is a model of the F-104 Starfighter, one of the designs of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson of the Lockheed "Skunk Works". It was designed way back in 1952, entered production in 1954, and was in production until 1983. The U2 spy plane, which he also designed, is basically just a F-104 with longer wings.

Great video.  Loved that low level barrel roll pass.

I want one!

Nice.  Lights and everything.  Very detailed model.  I'd like to see the controller.  His  barrel roll was a bit loose, but probably hard to do remotely.  I wonder if he has collision sensors at those speeds.  Also, it would be nice to have an attitude indicator on the controller.  He'd almost need to have the complete T-bank, along with fuel and stall.

He obviously has ailerons, landing gear, and throttle, but I wonder if he has rudder and flaps.  It seems that he can steer the front wheel, also.  It must have some sort of limp home mode, and perhaps a range limiter.  It should also have an altitude ceiling.  I'd probably also include an emergency parachute.

Here are some more giant model airplanes. But non of them have pilots as daring as the F-104 pilot in the first video...
First up, the F86 Sabre (America's answer to the Mig-15 in Korea)...

Next, the F4 Phantom (the Vietnam war's top fighter jet)...

Some planes from the British.
The English Electric Lightning...

The Avro Vulcan bomber...

You may recall that the Vulcan was the plane Britain used to bomb the Argentinians during the Falklands War. That was the longest bombing run in history -- from England to the Falkland Islands (off the coast of Argentina). It also appeared in one of the older James Bond movies, "Thunderball".
Vulcan being hijacked in "Thunderball"...

Resurrecting this thread to post another video of big model airplanes. The coolest thing in this video is the Antanov AN-225 cargo plane with the Russian "Buran" space shuttle on it's back. It releases the shuttle in the air for a glide test on it's own.
