As much as I hate to do this I am putting the car I have treasured the past couple years up for sale. It is an 86 SE with the 4 speed muncie and 135,000 miles on the body and less than 1500 on the rebuilt engine. I bought the car and all it needed was a fuel pump, so I replaced the fuel pump and the car ran. But would squeal when going into gear. So I dropped the cradle, and installed a new clutch kit and throughout bearing and the car drove. Soon after I replaced all plugs and wires, remanufactured calipers in the front as well as new pads, and calipers from a member on here, drilled and slotted rotors and new pads on the rear. I replaced the parking brake cable and it is functional. I then got a leak in the radiator and replaced it with an all aluminum one. It has the gt rims with tires that have less than 1000 miles. I installed a grand prix cd player and it is fully functional. It has kyb all around, and the rear struts were made into coilovers by whodeaniei . New sway bar end links, and bushings as well as new outer tie rods all the way around. Installed 7730 ECM and had the chip tuned by Ryan with sinister performance. I drove the car to get an alignment and around town a couple days and got a trueleo intake and went and got it, my valve covers, and thermostat housing all powdercoated red to match. I removed the water lines run to the throttle body, the cold start injector, and egr. Once installing the trueleo the car would not start. I replaces the cap, rotor, icm, the plugs again, and haven't had any luck. One injector was stuck open and flooded the engine but I have replaced it and changed the oil. The car will crank if I put a little oil in the cylinders until the oil is burned out the cylinders and it won't start again unless I do the oil in the cylinders again. Recently the starter bell housing broke off so it now needs a starter. I don't think this is a very extensive job to get this thing on the road, and other than the starter could be free and just involve some labor. I installed a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to monitor and see if it was leaking or an injector was stuck open. I hate to sell the car, but I need to have the motor in my truck rebuilt before it leaves me stranded, and this is where I'm hoping to get some money to do that. Poor college kid = low money. The thread in my signature is a long 20 pages with lots of pictures and details on everything I did with the car. Interior is ok seats need to be redone both are ripped, headliner board is solid but I removed the material from it. Dash just needs cleaning and has small chip on the driver side corner IIRC shifter surround is warped but solid, center console is just dirty and the bottom tabs are broken. Car has one thin base coat of black, I was in the process of painting and stopped to install truleo intake and never could get it to run so I never finished the paint. Sail panels are glass and are solid. Everything on the car works except fuel gauge. Exhaust is dumped under the air canister. I removed the air box in the fender well and installed an intake tube from the side scoop to the air canister, and dremeled out the little tri piece in the bottom of the can like the part Rodney dickman sells. I can talk all day, and truely love the car, but its just not practical for me at the time. I have to keep my priorities straight. I will try it again when I graduate. I am open to any and all offers best offer takes it. It's hard to put a price on a non running car. My phone # is 912-618-0545 and email is matt_1142009@yahoo.com

This is really disheartening to read this. To have put so much time, effort and money into this car, I think shows that you really loved it.
In reading your summary, it seems like everything was OK after you did the 7730 swap, right up until you removed the intake. Unless you had the Lisle push rod remover, it means you had to change the adjustment of the valves. Then you say that it won't start without putting oil into the cylinders. That obviously helps to boost cylinder compression. I'm wondering if you didn't get your valves just a little too tight. Have you run a compression test on all cylinders? It wouldn't cost anything and would certainly be worthwhile to pull the intake and valve covers and check the valve adjustments again.
-
The only thing i did to mess with the valves was when I pulled the valve cover I noticed one of the rocker arms and valve springs were loose, so I just went ahead and took it off to check that push rod to make sure it was fine and it was so I put it all back together and tightened it following the advice of the haynes repair manual. I pulled the valve cover to check when the starter bell housing broke because I didn't know what the metal noise was. Not sure why that one was loose, but I am pretty confident I did it correctly. I updated fifis progress with some pics if anyone is interested on that car. I'm going to treat the tank, install new fuel pump and remove pulsator and rubber hoses and install all body panels and change oil and goo from there. I will compression test FIFI by the end of the week though. I hate to get rid of an unfinished project. Anyone have a working starter for cheap? I saw one on eBay for about $35 it sad it was for a cutlass I think with a 2.8, it said it was compatible with all 2.8 fieros.so I may get it
-
Correction it says that the starter is for a cavalier.

If you want to save a little weight, put on a late 90's-early 00's Grand Am starter (and several other GM cars). I put one on my 88 coupe when I rebuilt the engine. The picture below shows the new starter compared to the old one.

-
Will the one in my link work? It's pretty cheap.
-
It should. The picture doesn't look right, but it's a "stock image", not the actual starter.
-
Just wondering because the title says starter motor, just trying to make sure its the complete thing. It's pretty cheap. Seems too good to be true.
-
Call your parts store to see if it will fit the Cavalier and Fiero. Cross reference GM part #10455023. It should fit 84-88 Fieros, both 4 and 6 cylinder engines. If you can get the starter off those cars at the junk yard, it might save you some money until you decide which way you're going to go.
-
Well the car is still for sale, but I would love to get it running. The closest junkyards is 55 miles away, so with 14 mpg from my truck im not spending.much more buying the one off eBay for $35 than I would on gas. Depending on how the speed shop does on my truck, I may get them to do a Fiero motor swap one day.
-
Starter has been changed, and compression tests have been done, working on the 86 everyday to get it running, but its still for sale. If I get it running, obviously I will want a little more for it.
-
Both cars still available. At promised price. I have a trueleo intake, kyb coilovers in the rear, a 7730 swap, and many new parts on the car. Someone should be getting a heck of a deal. Or, what if I offered someone my 87 and any other parts I have to help my get my 86 running? I would still need to sell it, but it would probably sell easier of it runs.
-
Still available, come help me get the 86 running and take the 87 home with you as well as any other parts I have laying around.
-
Matt,
Hey man I would love to come down there and help you get the other one running in exchange for the 86 but I am not that great with the custom wiring stuff. I work on cars every day and have built motors before but following up someone else's wiring mess would be questionable. Wish you were closer actually what city is the car located in? Peace

It was good talking with you Pete, and as I have previously mentioned the wiring and all should be fine considering the car ran good after the swap. I would love for someone to get FIFI running for the 87, but I have failed to mention I refer to it as a parts car, because it has no title. Fifi however has a good clean title. I have a few people interested in the coilovers and trueleo intake, so if anyone is interested in the car without those two items for $1200 shoot me a PM or give me a call at 912-618-0545. I am continuing to tinker with it, and will try a few things Pete mentioned on the phone and continuously update FIFI's Progress.

Coilovers pending sale, car price reduced to $1400
-
Hey man good luck with getting it running. You are so close to getting it I can feel it. It would be a shame to sell it now. Wish you were in Atlanta or closer I would take you up on it but it is just too damn far for me. all the best...peace

Tell me about it. I double checked timing and spark when I got off the phone with you and all was good. Just doesn't make sense. I did notice that there isn't a vacuum line connected to the cannister by the air filter housing.though.
-
Matt, the vacuum line for that canister attaches to the steel lines that run along the trunk wall. On the passenger side near the dogbone, it transitions to 2 rubber lines. They have a common rubber connector that connects to 2 hard plastic lines at the MAP sensor, then they pass underneath the back runners of the intake, in the area of the cold start and fan switches.
The hose coming off the top nipple of the canister is a vacuum that connects underneath the intake right where the metal neck transitions into the main part of the intake. It's kinda behind the distributor. The lower right nipple is the one that pulls the vapors from the fuel tank.
You should have a vacuum line diagram on your decklid unless it's been painted over or removed.
-
the diagram is there. I no longer have those lines that run along the trunk wall. Evap delete was part of the 7730 tune. So i guess that isn't a problem either.
-
I've got somebody hunting a manual 4 speed tranny in good shape, how much for yours?
-
I sold both cars a while back, sorry for not updating the post.
