i kept getting gas on my shoes when fueling....and here's why! i replaced this one with a used one in good condition off eBay. do you know how hard these are to find now?!
-
That's unbelievable. If the fuel filler pipe is rusted that bad, how's the rest of the car? Have you looked at the rear frame rails?
How hard was it to replace the pipe?
-
the pipe was not hard to replace....once the wheel well, air box and air cleaner where removed. the only mounting points are three screws at the filler head, behind the cover and cup, then the two associated hoses on the back of the tank.
the frame rails are surprisingly solid. I was surprised to find no rust on them, but there is rust around where the air ducting comes through the sheet metal between the engine bay and exterior. i cut and treated affected areas.....then buttoned everything back up.
The biggest thing was figuring out which way twist the pipe to get it out, then the new one in, as it is plumbed in through a cavity inn the space frame....I'm glad to see that all my hours playing Tetris finally paid off!

I'm impressed. You went from thinking about it Saturday morning to having it done in no time.

as an added bonus, i found a shock that wasn't connected to the cradle, so fortunately,i had the correct size shoulder bolt lying around an put it in place. the shock goes between the block, attaching close to the oil filter, and the cradle. i never even knew it was there! I've never noticed it, even changing the oil!
i guess everything happens for a reason;)

Is this the tube that leaks and starts fires? I know I didn't get one of these.

Wow... that's in rough shape!
This website (http://www.fillernecksupply.com) doesn't have Fiero OEM fillers, but they have parts you could probably use to fabricate your own.
In case I did the link-in-text thing wrong, here is the address:

PS, if you get some of the DIY welded parts, I don't recommend welding until after you remove the fuel tank. However, if you have a video camera, it could make for an entertaining, viral YouTube video of a car-b-que. ;D
