Looking to buy a 4 spd from a 1984 fiero with the economy gearing.
-
I just spoke with Paul about the trans in the 84. It is an 84 transmission, but we don't know what gearing. I've heard there's a way of telling what the gearing is when the tag is missing. A casting ID or something stamped into the case comes to mind. Anyone know?
-
The sticker under the hood on the left inner fender should indicate either MY8 or M19 about 5 sets of numbers over on the second row, unless that is the tag you are referring to.
-
If it is the MY8 that you want, I have a good one. PM me or email me at cowspatoot@gmail.com and we can work out the details.
-
I apologize for never replying. I appreciate the replies but I've been unable to login and was not receiving password resets requested back then and recently, but I got one today! I don't know why it worked this time.
I'm currently in the middle of installing an f23 on the 4.3l v6.

It's awesome to see you back!
When do you figure to have this completed?
-
I don't know. I need to finish the cable adapter at the shifter, modify the trans linkage I built for the original cables, and finish the cradle end of the front trans mount. Then I need to pull the trans again since I didn't realize there was an potential issue with shimming that needs to be checked and it should be done. The fabrication should be done in a couple weeks, weather being a factor.
The cables are a heavy duty universal type, with plastic liner and stainless ends, designed for very long runs with low friction but at 72 inches, but only cost about $25 each.
The cable adapter slides into my 4 spd shifter without modifying the shifter (though a 4spd shifter needs a couple unrelated parts removed anyway to be used with a 5 spd).
The system makes it a shorter throw without shortening the shift lever/handle.
The rear mount bracket uses the fiero mount, is drop in, and can be removed easier than the original bracket imho.
The front mount uses the original but slightly modified f23 mount, a small flat bracket with a spacer, and a bolt on cradle bracket to make it easier to work on.
The most complicated part is the trans linkage that replaces the arm on the shaft. Sane basic design as the stock f23 bits for shift and select.
I have a different approach on determining the correct shim to use also.
I've seen custom systems where some folks have had cable overload failures. I'll show how to set up the system properly so that cannot happen.
All in all, just a fresh approach by an old guy with a carb... :)

That's really great!
You'll post pics?
-
Definitely. I'll try it now with PIP.

It's awesome to see you back!
Yes, good to have you back. Come to the August meeting and I'll let you sit in your old Mr. Mike's leather seats.
-
Thanks! I forgot what happened to those seats. I think I was one of his first customers. I think it was around $200 for both!
I have Mike's in the 4.3 car but my color choice leaves most to ask what the seats came out of. They are still holding up well though.
That is quite a haul since I'm practically in Alabama but I may be able to make it.
-
Glad you finally got your login "sorted". (Was out of town. Just got your message on the other forum.)
I'm on your side of the world. Douglasville/Paulding. About 6 miles up 92 from I-20.
-
You aren't far away. 2500fps is in Adairsville, Ron768 is 30 miles west of Huntsville, OldOne and Drewbdo are in Cartersville and f85gtron and pgackerman are in Augusta.
-
Would you care to elaborate on the $25 heavy duty shift cables? I'm in the market for some. Inquiring minds want to know!
-
This is the Dillard House lunch? I'd like to go. We'll see closer to the date.
Ron, I sent you an email about it. I'd like to get all the info together before posting about it.
-
To shorten the shifter in my 87, I just went to PullAPart, pulled the clip and took the shift lever out of an 84 and swapped it out with my Getrag shift lever.
-
I have an 84 shifter in my 88 t-top, also. I think I got it from Ebay.
-
I cut and welded my 85 shifter handle in the 90s before the 4.3 swap. I guess it is pretty close to the length of the 84.
I've been to South Atlanta Pull a part the most but rarely go now. That 88 on the northside looks interesting. I wonder what they sell complete cars for?
-
I called the number listed in their East Atlanta Used Cars section, several times, and no one answered.
-
My 87 was an auto 2.5 that I drove daily before the swap. Sure, it shook at some rpms, the exhaust manifold eventually cracked, the converter lock up was starting to slip, and the dis module was going out, but the ac was soooo nice!
-
No more AC?
-
I don't have the compressor on the 4.3 car. Once the rest is sorted, I may find a way to put it back on but with these swaps, it is usually driven by the rubber mounted ring on the harmonic damper on the crankshaft becuase it is so tight with the longer v8. I'd rather not do it that way.
I traded the original compressor to Don years ago. It will likely be a new sanden gong on rather than the original variable displacement pump.
My daily driver's ac went out a few years ago and I have not bothered to replace it. Too many irons in the fire so I never got around to it.
