it's it possible to check/set timing off of aldl data using winaldl?

Assembly Line Diagnostic Link. The connector is behind the cigarette lighter plate. Remove two torx screws to see it.

Grabbed from a PFF thread.  Note that in the ALDL diagram at the bottom of the link, this is how it's installed under dash of most GM vehicles.  In the Fiero it's located in the position TopNotch indicted, but it's turned upside down.  Thus, the A and B terminals are on the bottom level, passenger side as you look back into the opening.  Another thing of note is that the ignition should always be in the OFF position when inserting or removing your jumper.  I've never tested the theory, but most say that it can blow the ECM if you do it with the ignition in the ON position.  A big paper clip fashioned into a U works just great.  Bring the car to operating temp, shut it off then start the procedure. 

For your question, Ron, using the procedures in the link below, the ECM control of timing is disabled.  With Winaldl you can do real time checks, so I don't know if it's disabled, but I would think not.  With the jumper, you're setting timing at a static point, without any outside input, then when the ECM is back in the circuit, it adjusts timing based on sensor input. 

Roger and Raydar have used Winaldl and certainly can answer your question.

thanks. i understand that the mode of the computer can be changed using different resistor values between the jumper terminals.  My thinking is that if one could disable the spark advance, one could then do a bang up job setting the timing using the data stream...

Contrary to what you have heard, i.e.; changing resistor values or any other such nonsense, you don't have to re-invent the wheel to do this correctly.

i checked out tech tips...can't find anything related to aldl.

I seriously doubt it. The computer doesn't know where the timing is. It only knows where it thinks it is.
The program in the chip calls for ten degrees of initial timing. It's the first item in the "ECM constant" table.
The timing advance tables in the computer are based upon the premise that you actually have set it correctly to ten degrees of initial timing, using the jumper method. It bases all of its calculations, referenced to that baseline.

Ok, got it.  I'm new to aldl data tables and i could see where it is advancing....i thought it was reading the base and adding the advance value.  thanks for the explanation!
