Please can someone explain the definitive difference between the '87 and '88 exhaust 'Y' pipe?
-
The 88 pipe was moved away from the engine by a few inches, but the main difference is that the down pipe approaches the head pipe flange at a different angle. The two years won't bolt together. I think the 88 down pipe may also be a little shorter. That's what I remember Ashby telling me.

So how do I tell the difference between the two?

The 88 will have the dimpled heat shield. Should the shield be missing, the egr valve base will be tipped to the drivers side on about a 45° angle. 85-87 egr valves stand more upright.
The 88 Oh-2 sensor points to the rear of the car, just above the flange while earlier sensors point toward the passenger side.
