Title: Radiator fan
Post by: Slyp on September 20, 2019, 01:46:47 pm
If I said that the radiator fan doesnt come on.  That includes air conditioner or heater.  Checked fuse and it appears to be good.  Looking to get some testing ideas to narrow down   Thanks

The relay is next to the radiator.

You'll need to first listen for a click, when the AC is engaged.

Yep, that's it.  I had thought there was a pic in the October 2018 newsletter, but apparently not.

Check to see if it was picking when air was on.  Did not feel it pick when pushing the air conditoner buttons.  Now I have the fan out so dont know if that may mean something, have a new motor comming will try again.  Is there a schematic of the circuit somewhere.  I have a copy of the manual but could not find it easily on the cd

Put a MVM on the wires going to the relay, and on the wires going to the fan.

There are two ways to turn on the fan.  one is the air conditioner and one the thermostat.  Is there a schematic on those circuits.  I have a copy of the cd for the card but cant seem to find the paths to the fan motor

Coolant system on pages 995-1001, or 8A-31-01 - 8A-31-6.

It might help to note that I'm looking at the '88 Service Manual.

The car is a 87 so it should be close. Need to get the fan motor to see if that cures it first then branch out from there.  At least I'll know "what it aint"  So there are two ways to turn on the fan 1 is the temp sensor and the other is the AC.  The fan only has two pins. so does the fan connect to the relay directly/???

My Fiero is different, and I cannot read wiring schematics, but I believe that both the AC controls and the fan switch hoth pick the relay, and that the fan connects from there.

On my Fiero, the wires to/from the relay go into a harness at the front bulkhead, then run under the left headlight assembly and over to the fan.

I have a brand new fan motor, somewhere.  I'm tempted to test the wiring on it.

If the relay does not pic, the problem is not the fan motor.  While the ignition is ON, you can short the pin on the fan switch to ground, which should cause the relay to pick.

I suspect the relay is the problem.  Possibly bad ground.
