Post by: Fierofool on January 17, 2020, 12:14:18 pm
The February 15th meeting has been moved from JR's to

THE DULUTH DINER
3620 PEACHTREE IND BLVD

It is about 7 miles further up Peachtree Ind. Blvd.

Perhaps the places under discussion should be listed here.

Scott and I are going to check out the Duluth Diner tomorrow if it fits his schedule.  Anyone want to join us?

Scott wasn't able to go to the Duluth Diner today so Tegan and I went.  The place is neat and clean and quiet.  Not overly busy at our meeting hour, but the manager says it varies.  He says he can accommodate us, but if we have a large attendance, we may have a short wait.  That shouldn't be a problem with our normal attendance up to a dozen members.

Tegan had the child's menu spaghetti and meatball.  It was an adult size serving.  I had the fried catfish.  Comes with a soup or salad and a vegetable.  Only about a buck more than the same meal at The Galaxy Diner.

Parking space?  Visibility/exposure?

Easily accessible from main roads for attendees?

The Duluth Diner sits on a major thoroughfare, running between Gainesville and Atlanta.  Side lot parking and highway frontage parking.  Until one learns the layout of the next door businesses, coming southward they will need to make a U-turn to get into the parking lot.

Pleasant Hill Road from the south comes from I-85 and Peachtree Industrial from the south comes from Atlanta and I-285.  From Pleasant Hill, turn left on Howell Ferry and come across the parking lot of the Family Medicine building next door to avoid the U-Turn.

I didnt mind JR's It was 1 hour each way to get there.  And there was a lot of room for us.  And it appears it will be 1 hour each way  to the Dinner and I assume it is the same type of menu .  So it doesnt matter to me which place......

It was decided that we would meet again at JR's for the February meet and then pick another location to try.  I was going to suggest Duluth Diner for March.

The Duluth Diner isn't anything like JR's.  The menu is more like The Galaxy Diner with a wide variety of foods.

Duluth Diner is 8.7 miles north on Peachtree Industrial Blvd from JR's.

Just a thought, but it would be interesting to get the opinions of these establishments on the club having meetings there.  Some places tolerate such things, while other places welcome them.

I spoke with the owner/manager.  I told him I may bring the club one Saturday, and if they chose the restaurant, it would be a regular monthly thing.  He was in approval.

Hmmm... Weather man (several channels) is saying 1-2 inches of snow, north of I-20. More in the mountains.
Could be interesting.

People in Atlanta freak out when it snows. We can't drive. :D

I've never really understood not being able to drive in snow.  1-2 inches shouldn't be an issue.
Title: Re: February Club Meeting Location
Post by: Fierofool on February 08, 2020, 07:51:17 am
It depends upon how much practice one gets.  Up north, like in your area they get a lot of practice.  Down here, we might get to practice every 3 or 4 years and then that might last for less than a day.

Snow up north is usually a little different than down here.  I've lived in St. Louis during the winter and I've lived in New England.  Unless the snow was too deep, we could usually drive at or close to the speed limit.  Plows weren't called out until snow accumulated to 2 inches.
The initial snow covering would blow off the highway as it was light powdery snow.  Down here, it's wet heavy snow.  It packs down and becomes a sheet of ice as cars run over it.

Then those people from up north or the guys with 4-wheel drive who think they can drive in any snow come flying along at or near the speed limit and begin bouncing off things like a steel ball in a pinball machine.

When we moved South from NY, I remember the locals and snow driving.  Laughable.

Bottom line, I test every snow, every drive when I start.  Each snow is different.  Periodically, I re-evaluate conditions.  Yes, experience helps.  Unfortunately, most new drivers were not taught to drive in the snow.

When the people on the news use the word, "snow", drivers start wrecking.

If you cannot be there, that is understandable.  Your presence at meetings does matter.  Whenever club members are missing, it is noticed.  Meetings are always more enjoyable with more people.  In a club as large as GFC, each person makes a big difference.

Your input and presence are important.

I don't know how the weather was on the east and west sides but it was pretty bad north. My wife and I headed out from Ball Ground in different cars to meet some friends for breakfast in Cumming. I was going to continue on down to Atlanta for some errands and attend the meeting, the wife was going to return to Ball Ground and our friends were continuing to Gainesville. While we were in Cumming it was snowing pretty heavily the 2 hours we were there.

Since the meeting rescheduled my wife and I headed home in the 2 cars. I'm driving on Hwy 372 and go around a curve and downhill and there is a full size long wheel base Dodge van in the right side ditch with the rest of the van blocking most of the road. I'm only running about 30MPH but touch the brakes and no traction. I slide down the hill with the anti lock working trying to get traction. Luckily I was able to slide by him in what remained of the left lane. My wife had the same issue but managed to get stopped. As I slid by I noticed his Damn New York tag. Why is it always the Northerners that end up wrecked when we have bad winter weather in Georgia? If I had a dollar for how many times I've seen this?

Ice is ice no matter where you are. Before getting back home I passed 2 more accidents where cars had gotten together and in both instances there where cars with tags on the front bumper, if ya catch my drift. The friends headed to Gainesville were turned back by State Patrol in Dawson County.

Replying to MikeMac:
Then those people from up north or the guys with 4-wheel drive who think they can drive in any snow come flying along at or near the speed limit and begin bouncing off things like a steel ball in a pinball machine.

When learning to drive, one of the things covered is the best practice of being able to stop when cresting a blind hill.  This is especially true during bad weather.  In general, losing control of a vehicle means the person was driving beyond their capabilities.

I have several trucks.  One of them just has no grip on wet or ice.  I believe the problem is the tires (which came with the truck).  The others have much better traction.

For any given snow here, most of the vehicles in the ditch are FWD or SUVs, although I did see a Camaro spin out recently.  Mostly, the RWD trucks and sports cars drive on by.  4WD is dangerous on ice--particularly certain setups.

It looks like several inches of snow on there.

I don't see any ice.  Snow provides much better traction than ice.  If your vehicles are FWD, you can try backing them up the hill.  Be gentle and steady on the throttle.

My boss used to have an Aveo.  As much as I think those Daewoo products are junk, that Daewoo was awesome in the snow.  After several hundred miles, my boss traded the Aveo for a Nissan Versa.  The Versa is terrible in the snow.

Hopefully calling today's meeting until next week didn't  put anyone out. I knew the meeting location itself was clear but I had heard the area around Athens was bad and I knew that Gainesville was bad. We have regular members that come from both areas. Better safe than sorry?

I had suggested in another thread that we go ahead and meet at the Duluth Diner since we have to advertise the new meeting date. Thoughts?

The food was good. (I was a bit surprised that green peppers and onions were "standard equipment" when you ordered home fries with your omelet. Have to ask for the stripped down version, next time.) But yeah. No real complaints.
It was kind of confusing because they put everybody's meal on the same check. Although when we went to pay, they were good enough to break it down as we arrived at the register, and let us make individual payments. This is NOT a complaint. This was the first time we invaded "en masse", so I'm sure it'll get more organized.
Was a relatively good turnout. (No snow, this time. :D )

Hudson is definitively a book nerd, when not on the computer.  Currently reading the Nyxia series.  Chews up a book in a few days, I'm on first name with the local library.

He is super picky and ate everything, so it must have been good.  My Monte Christo was a different take on the traditional sandwich, accurate in the description, and was pretty good.  The fries were good as well.

With all the technology, books, and other distractions, it is hard to live in the present.  I struggle with this also.  I'm sure it will be worse for my kids, who are bookworms, too.  My social skills have always been lacking, so I use social gatherings to try to improve those skills.  Growing up, it was mostly livestock.  They never complained about my social skills.

One day, perhaps a bunch of people will sit together, but only communicate through their smartphones, without looking at each other or talking.
