The Parks and Recreation Director is proposing to revive the Auburn Car Show that Georgia Fieros started back in the early part of the century. I'll know more about it tomorrow night after the council workshop.
-
I think this would be a great idea!
-
Auburn is closer than Atlanta.

Auburn is closer than Atlanta.
Well... for some of us, I suppose.
-
Distance...such a relative thing.
-
heck its only this far away if you zoom out far enough. :::holds hand up with thumb and forefinger about an inch apart:::
-
I always need a good reason to drive mine somewhere for a show.

That works for lots of things...but no one drives up here.

I don't need much of an excuse. We go all over.

The initial presentation tonight was that a local car club would like to hold a monthly show in downtown Auburn on the last Saturday (But I think they meant the 4th Saturday) of each month from April to October. They said they usually have 60-70 cars show up at their shows. The city will close off a 2 block area to pedestrian traffic, only.
In the downtown area, we have a Pizza restaurant, and then there are the Whistlestop Shops. About a dozen small free-standing businesses that sell a wide variety of items from crafts and trinkets to food to clothing. Something for the ladies if they get bored with cars.
Named by the students at Auburn Elementary, Whistlestop is located across from R.H. Burel Park and is a greenspace park with picnic tables, newly planted shrubbery, and beautiful pecan trees. Auburn residents love to come by to pick and eat pecans. Whistlestop Park is also home to our Whistlestop Shops - microretailing opportunities for small businesses. Drop by today to visit or check out their website at https://whistlestopshops.com/our-stores The shops are open 11am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday. I'm not sure about the ones listed as under construction. I think the website hasn't been updated. I do know all the shops are occupied.

So, happening?
-
The car club made a proposal to the city. This was a workshop session where things are discussed but not voted on. It won't be known if the proposal is accepted by the city until the first Thursday of April when the council holds its business session to publicly vote on matters.
-
I was surprised this morning to find the old Ingles parking lot full of cars. I guess the council approved it in the back room. Anyway, here's a little sampling of what their first show brought out.
-
Very nice!, but here seems to be a shortage of Fieros in those pics.
-
There is a shortage of Fieros, but according to procedure, the council wasn't to vote on it until April and it isn't on the posted April Agenda. Didn't know it was happening in March.
That silver chevy nova at the right, with the vinyl top, is the one that belonged to the son of one of the women who was handing out the ballots at one of the car shows after the city took it over. He was only about 13 or 14. It was a People's Choice car show with one ballot per person. Someone said that the kid had a whole sticky pad of ballots and spent most of his time filling them out. He won best of show. His dad is no longer in charge of the show.
-
It is sad when that happens, but even in judged shows, people cheat. There is a Fiero club (which shall remain anonymous) that only votes for their own Fieros. I'd been warned, but have proof from 2 shows. I don't believe the club leaders condone this, but also don't believe that the club leaders can be ignorant of this. Maybe they don't want to see/do anything about it.
-
Anyone want to join me on the morning of the 24th? I'll save spots if I know how many. I'll also check time and entry fees.
-
No one insterested?
-
Did you get the time and entry fees?
-
Not on the calendar?
-
I can't find any contact info on the website of the club that sponsors it. I've made 2 voicemail and 1 email inquiry to the city parks and recreation who permits it, and they don't respond. City Hall is locked and they don't let anyone in except to get building permits and you must have an appointment.
I know the show is starts around 9 or 10. Last month they had a lot of vendor's tents set up along front of the old Ingles building. Mopar was a heavy presence as I recall.
I've messaged with Pat, JayDog, and Doug. Pat says 60% chance of rain. He and Jay are interested, unless it rains.
-
I don't have a car worth showing
-
I think we should forget it for this month. On the 6 o'clock weather, they were saying thunderstorms for Saturday.
-
Yall can come up to my shop, we can have a barbecue ;)
-
Now you decide that!
-
Now you decide that!
Maybe you didn't get the joke.......
-
OK. I got it. People tell me I take everything literally, so I was thinking food.
-
Flambe
-
No, I was thinking ribs, or maybe a juicy steak. Real meat--none of that cheap stuff. Of course, done over an apple chip fire. Maybe some golden corn on the cob, with butter, steam-cooked. With some hickory baked beans. And a tall, cold beverage.
-
Any update on this?
-
I have been exchanging emails with the city all day. The show that I was referring to hasn't been permitted, yet. The one I saw two months in a row is held on Saturday. Seems city employees are totally blind on the weekends. It's an unpermitted show but nobody does anything about it because they aren't working and by Monday, the show is gone. The police department refuses to address ordinance violations. It doesn't bring in revenue for them.
I've asked the permitting department to notify me when they issue permits, but in the meantime to send me contact information for the club that is sponsoring the event.
-
Hilarious. Actually, no. There are 4 freedoms. I feel like quoting J. B. Brooks.
-
I've made contact with the Auburn Car Show sponsors. Their next show will be May 22. It wasn't clear if it would be in downtown Auburn, 1359 4th Avenue, Auburn, or at the Top Dawg Tavern, 656 Exchange Cir., Bethlehem, GA 30620 at Ga. Hwy 316. They will also be holding a Memorial Day show at one of the two venues, but I believe it will be at Top Dawg.
The May 22 show will run from 1 til 4 pm. The Memorial Day show will begin at 11 AM and will have a number of military units present.
They will have their June show in Auburn on June 26, while some of us are at Carlisle.
-
Just wondering why Auburn would have a show in Bethlehem.
-
If the permit process hasn't been completed The Pharaohs will move it to Bethlehem. It isn't put on by Auburn. They just shut down 2/3 of the 3 blocks in front of the Whistlestop Shops, City Hall, Rocky's Pizza, ABC Printing and the PD. Thus the pemits needed. The club calls it the Auburn Car Show. The Memorial Day show will be the following weekend in Bethlehem.
-
Is the club participating, this month?
-
Guess not.
-
Neither show?
-
Auburn shows are 4th Saturday of each month. Downtown Auburn.
-
Can't do it in September.
