I've seen some PFF postings of cars with block heaters but it seems that no one knows if they were factory or aftermarket.

There are a couple of different styles.  Some have an element that inserts into the block as a replacement for the freeze plug.  Another style has a blanket or a heating element that wraps or clamps around a radiator or coolant hose.

Only vehicles I have seen with factory block heaters are Diesels. My Dodge truck came from Alaska and has heaters everywhere: block, oil pan, battery, transmission, all aftermarket

Lived in Alaska for 18 years. They are for freeze protection and not any performance or preventative measure needed unless you live in a place that is really frozen a good part of the year.

There are also dipstick oil heaters and magnetic oil pan heaters (won't work on aluminum oil pans, of course). I don't know if either of these are effective.
