Title: And then there were three...
Post by: TopNotch on February 14, 2011, 12:00:32 pm
One of my neighbors dropped by my house last Friday (while I was at work), and left word that he had a Fiero that he wanted to sell. It had been his fathers, who was in ill health and couldn't use it any more. He said it had been sitting for 6 months, and would start if you sprayed starting fluid in the intake, but wouldn't run.
I went over and looked it, offered him $500, and he said OK, and we shook on it.
The next day he towed it over and I gave him a check.
Here's what I got for my $500:

It's a bit rough -- the paint is pretty bad in places, the wing is split along the back edge, the driver seat bolster has duct tape on it, and the engine is dirty, but it seems sound otherwise.
The first thing I did was connect 12 volts to pin G of the ALDL connector, and I head the fuel pump click, but not run. I looked in my Helms manual to make sure that the G connector didn't go anywhere except to the fuel pump, and  then put 24 volts to it (two 12V chargers in series), to try to "kick start" the fuel pump. I heard it try to run, but it seems to be frozen. So next weekend, I'll drop the tank and change it out, and hopefully have a running Formula. The engine oil and coolant look clean, and the brakes work fine, including the parking brake. It has 135,000 miles on it.
The guy said the clutch had been replaced recently, and I noticed that it has an Isuzu transmission. That'll be fine, because I don't plan to do burn-outs.
One other thing -- It doesn't have the original wheels on it for some reason. It has 87 or below "lace" wheels, so the front offset is wrong, and the front wheels stick out a bit.

Nice find!  :D
I'm selling the wing & wheels off of my '88 Formula (have 17" wheels to go on it & plan to make a whale tail). Come by & check them out & I'll cut you a deal.

I child proofed the house, but they got in anyway.

I took this pic in the neighbor's yard...

It's a mess, and as you can see, the egr vacuum line is not connected. It's plugged instead. I have to find out what that's about.

The valve probably has a hole in the diaphragm so it creates a vacuum leak, setting a code.
Rather than repair it, he just capped it and I believe the code will go away.

They're shift cables for the Isuzu transmission. That's the easiest way to tell if you have one. The Getrag cables route differently.

What happened to this?  The dogbone has no rubber on the engine side.

Looks like the bushing is missing from the dogbone but the rubber's there.

Those also appear to be aftermarket Isuzu cables.  Stock cables have aluminum ferrules.  One of them is cone shaped.  They're not black with ribbing like those.

Did this one get sold, or do you still have it?

It is my parts car. Pieces of it live on in other cars.

Then there were 2.

It must be difficult, watching one leave home.

That's my parts car. Part of it went with the silver Formula. Part of it is in my yellow car, and part of it is in my white car.
