Title: Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade 2012
Post by: Fierofool on January 02, 2012, 10:28:02 pm
We are again invited to participate in the Atlanta St. Patrick's Day Parade.  The parade will take place on March 17, 2012 in Downtown Atlanta.

We are looking for as many shiny Fieros or Fiero rebodies as we can get.  Whodeanie said he would bring 3, including Kermit and will seek permission from customers whose cars are in his shop at the time to allow their cars to be entered in the parade.

All other Fieros which clean up well and have good paint are also invited to participate with us, whether you're a part of the club, or not.

There are a limited number of participants allowed and I must get the application submitted and I need to advise them of how many vehicles will be in our group.  Please sign up in this thread.

The Georgia Fiero Club will cover any entry fees.

I also have to write a narrative with a description of the cars so the announcer at the review stand can describe us.  So, it would be good that I know of any modifications or rebodied cars that will be entering.

Does that mean every car without being "shiny" (like mine and/or Don's) can't join? I don't even want to ask about Shanines car.

"T.C." and I are in again!

I've even been scouring the Internet since last yr's parade for a pair of life-sized stuffed Doberman toys that can be put on the rear decklid. (A running gag on MagPI was the Dobermans always chasing him over a wall or preventing him from getting into the estate).

Can't find no (life-sized) stuffed Dobbies, nowhere; so if anyone just happens to know where I can buy a pair, please let me know!

Being in a parade, we've always tried to have the best looking cars we can get.  Other car groups appear to do the same.  Don is the president, and it's his final decision as to what we put in.  I was just following the guidelines we've used in the past.  The interiors don't necessarily need to be topnotch because the only ones who see the inside are the people who walk around during the hours we sit waiting to go into the parade.  Folks along the parade route must stay on the sidewalks.

That is a really cool opportunity to show off the cars.

As much as I hate it, mine will not be in the parade, as it is not up to par.

I agree that a certain luster and look is a minimum we should demand of the cars participating, as thay are representing us and our club.

Which is why I wouldn't put mine in either. Charlie's is gorgeous, mine is just a driver for now. Maybe next year after I finish painting all these parts and installing them. It should present well then.

It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it will shine up. Slap some wax on it.

I understand that at a parade you want to show off but how many of us have a great looking car in the first place? And like Pat said: a good wax might do the trick.
I think it would be sad if only 5 Fieros could attend instead of 15 (random numbers).
Come on people, try the wax first and then see how your car looks like. We have over 2 months left to shiny up the cars ;)

That is a really cool opportunity to show off the cars.

Not only does it show off the cars, but it brings publicity to the club.  There are a number of awards given to participants and with a good showing, we could be a winner.

There are always people in the crowds that yell out that they had or have one.  One year, one guy was even pointing at each individual car and yelling out the year.  We've always been well received by the organizers and the viewers.

Maybe the club could buy a used paint gun and every member who wants to paint his/her car has to pay $50 towards the club. Would be way cheaper then going to a paint shop.

You can get a decent paint gun for just over $50 at Harbor Frieght. I thought about it but deceided to roll mine on instead. So far the Industrial Rustoleum is GOOD stuff. It did the fender perfectly.

My biggest challenge is getting the fender clean so the paint won't peel back up. Using Denatured Alcohol and Acetone have proven to be troublesome.

I'm actually looking at buying a complete huge portable compressor with water seperator / sprayguns (plural) / hoses AND airbrush kit, but after the 84 Duke took a turn for the worse on us and I had to inject it with some greenback, I'm sort of waiting with that purchase.

But an idea: if the club purchases it and we charge a nominal fee for usage, it could be paid off relatively quick.

My source is only asking $ 250 for it, and the guns and airbrush kit have never been used.

Just an idea

\D

Disregard, I've decided to buy it next week. After 3 Fiero paintjobs it'll have paid for itself ;D

It might be nice to have but do we really want to spend money on a used compressor.
I would hate to see the club in the RED again.

Guess nobody wants to see the club being in the red. I think the complete huge portable compressor with water seperator / sprayguns (plural) / hoses AND airbrush kit was around $250, not a bad price at all.

Post by: Fierofool on January 04, 2012, 09:43:55 pm
Sounds like a good price.  I paid more than that for my compressor and I bought it back in the 80's.  Then I had to buy the water separator, hose and paint gun on top of that.  I wonder how many would partake of it to make it pay for itself.  How many people do we have that have ever done any automotive painting?  I bet there are a few of us who would like to repaint our cars.

where would it be stored ? the tempurature needs to be in the 70's for the paint job to turn out decent or a heated garage

Storage isn't an issue, but the paint chamber is something I'm looking into right now.
If I had the correct type of exhaust, I'd heat my garage and do it there.

Since I have the car with the "looks good at 6 feet away" paint job... you guys tell me if the little stormtrooper indy can go... I promise no mismatch color panels... car will be all white one way or the other... even if it means the body stays as it is till after the parade...

Can spray can paint be wet sanded for a better gloss?

OK, the price of the compressor is reasonable.
I was under the impression that in order to paint a car it has to be a certain temperature.
In a dust free area.
And the paint has to be able to bake for several hours.

Shannon, your car should be fine, IIRC.
We had someone, one year, who had a bleached out red paint job. He put floor wax on it to shine it up.
Not that I'm recommending that.

with spray paint the temps are more of an issue and is humidity.  With real auto paint you can paint in almost any condition, you just need to adjust the mixture of hardner and paint... ect...  The compressor pressure, gun settings and spray tips also come into play when the weather changes...  i don't know how to do it, but I do know how much is involved.  also different paint companies paints also behave different.  Its a big recipes that has to take in account all variables or things can go HORRIBLY wrong.  As far as harderning... all auto paint will harden in any condition bake or not as hardener is added... this will happen with our w/o a booth and bake cycle.  the bake cycle just speeds up the process and opens the door to using different paint mix combos... Rattle can paint however is missing the catalyst that auto paint has so it never full hardens... a bit of gas on a rattle can job will soften the paint no matter what the age, but not so with auto paint.  I dated a guy who worked at a paint booth manufacturer and picked up a bit of knowledge... lol... hope I'm remembering it all correctly!  memory ain't what it used to be. :D

This is the lineup I have so far.  Have I missed anyone?

Tim's Mera
Don H. if he can borrow a nose bra for Darrel's car.
Charlie's 87
Harry's 88
Shannon's 84
Pat  1 or 2?  Can we get a driver for the second one?  Ray said he'd drive it.
Jerry's 85
Dean will supply 2 or 3.  Maybe more if cars are available and we can provide drivers.

So that's only 6 that are definites.  Not a very good showing so far.  If you want to add yours, quote this message and add on.

Everyone participating will need to make the March meeting so we can lay out our plans for pre-staging and for how we will present ourselves in the parade.

After Valentine's day, the Dollar stores will start offering St. Pats decorations.  Dollar General is a good one for static cling decorations like shamrocks.  If you have blemishes on your car that need to be hidden, this is a good way.  Plaster it with shamrocks.  Also, taking an idea that John Wilhoff, aka 88DatabaseGuy, used in a parade, get some green saran wrap and cover your headlights.  Some of the static cling shamrocks can be cut down to achieve the same effect.

We likely will have more cars available than we have drivers.  Anyone who would volunteer to drive someone else's vehicle, please let me know.  Dean said he may be able to provide several, but might need drivers and there are others of us who have extra cars or cannot attend that may want their car in the parade.

There has been a little snafu in our entry to the parade.  Apparently the persons receiving the faxed applications didn't pass it on to the parade organizers, even though it was submitted a week before the deadline.  When I checked on our acceptance it was found they didn't have the application.

Ed Moran of the St. Patrick's Day committee had me to resubmit and they've put us into the parade.  There is a caveat, however.  They have limited us to only 10 cars.  If we have them, I can probably sneak in one or two extras without a problem.  This is the list I have at the moment.

Tim's Mera
Don H. if he can borrow a nose bra for Darrel's car.  Currently with drawn--see note below
Charlie's 87--Withdrawn if we have enough cars without it.
Harry's 87
Shannon's 84
Pat  1 or 2?  Can we get a driver for the second one?  Ray said he'd drive it.
Jerry's 85
Dean will supply 2 or 3.  Maybe more if cars are available and we can provide drivers.
GMGuy's 87GT
Raydar  Formula Fastback
Brian  (Bristowb)  87GT

Unfortunately, it looks like Don H's car won't be in the parade.  It rolled over a stone wall, striking Daryl's, knocking it backwards through the garage door, then Don's hit his wife's car in the side.  Pretty badly damaged.  Complete rear including the clip needs to be replaced.

I am pulling my car out of the lineup to allow other members who have never participated to be in the parade.  GMGuy, you will need to bring your car to the March meeting so we can see it.  We want the best looking cars we can get since we are limited.

Guys and Gals, the news for the parade isn't good.  I've been swapping emails and faxes with the Chairman of the parade all afternoon.  It seems that they didn't get our faxed application, even though it was faxed twice.  They said that our fax was the only one they didn't receive.  When I didn't get notice of acceptance, I emailed and was told they hadn't received it.  They allowed me to re-fax, even after the deadline.  Ed Moran worked hard to get us in but we were denied, even after I gave them a copy of my fax log with their fax number clearly indicating it was sent a week prior to deadline.  Below is a copy of his email.

CHARLES, BAD NEWS!

I WAS JUST INFORMED THE LINEUP HAS BEEN FINALIZED AND APPROVED.

THE GEORGIA FIERO CLUB WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 2013 TO APPLY TO MARCH IN THE PARADE.

I AM SO SORRY FOR THE MISUNDERSTANDING.

MOST SINCERELY AND WITH DEEPEST APOLOGIES.

ED

Ed Moran, Chairman

I'm game.

I like the Helen idea for March 17.  I'm sure they'll be serving plenty of green beer and green margaritas.  Maybe to accommodate the folks on the western side of town, we could meet up around Roswell or at Dewey's house   ;D  for breakfast.

I can set up a scenic route to get there.

That really sucks @the parade :(.

Helen? Haven't we all been there already? In my yes it's a tourist trap, way over priced and overrated.
Isn't there anything else in GA worth seeing?

FieroFool and I checked the Microcar Museum in Madison; it's closed for renovations until this summer.

It is absolutely worth putting at the top of our To-Do List, though!

I like the idea of us being in a 4th of July parade...

Well, the St. Pat's Parade is dead and we're getting off the subject of the thread.  Can I suggest we go to our What Would You Like To Do thread and throw around some more suggestions there?  Posters, bring the ideas you've already posted over there and re post.
