Title: Run For The Hills # 18, September 20-22, 2013
Post by: Fierofool on July 03, 2013, 08:43:00 pm
Mark your calendars and arrange time off from work.  Make arrangements to put the kids in reform school and the dogs in obedience school.  Or you could just bring them along.

Georgia Fiero's trusty scouts are roaming the back hills of Georgia and the far reaches of Northern Alabama and into Southern Tennessee for the best roads we can find to test that new suspension, brake upgrade, or engine swap.  It will even give the old stock stuff a little to huff and puff about.  I guarantee you, there's going to be a lot of twisting going on.

We will be updating this thread from time to time, so please check back regularly to see what's happening.

Edit: RFTH18 information is here (http://gafiero.org/rfth18i.shtml)!

The secret is volume.  For every good pic I produce, there are 20 bad ones.
Sometimes, as Greg has posted, I get a great pic of the dash.

Greg called today, from a roadside in Michigan.
Said something about a spun cam gear and that the 4.9 swap might happen sooner than later.

He isn't stranded; his cousin was on his way with the trailer.

*Sigh*

It wouldn't be RFTH without a time crunch leading up to it.

Firefly, here's a chance to drag out all those pictures you've taken over the years.  Everyone else is invited to contribute, too.  In order to get graphics onto the art and accept orders, please try to get them to us by Saturday August 3.

We are in need of artwork for this year's event tshirt and coffee mugs.  In recent years, my photo library has diminished due to not having a passenger riding with me.

The person who's photo is selected for use will receive one of the limited edition event coffee mugs, and I think the club can also provide you with a free event tshirt.  This will be the sole compensation for permission to use your photo.

Since we will not be having a raffle this year, the tshirts and coffee mug raffle will be the only way we will have for raising funds.

Submit your photos to   GeorgiaFieroClub@Gmail.Com    Subject:  RFTH 18 Photo Contest

Good news!!

Greg sent me a pic today showing active gauges on the 'vert.
He didn't kill it after all.  Ignition module!  He will be driving it home from Michigan in the next few days.

Many of the pics I have taken are on his computer because they were with his camera, so when he gets home we can send you all the pics you want.   He may even be able to set things up to where you can browse them directly from his machine.

Can't make the RFTH this year, but if anyone wants to run behind the pack in their small SUV or whatever, they are welcome to take along all of the roadside emergency stuff I bought.

Oil, coolant, small toolbox, extra fuses, ECMs (V6), traffic cones, flashing lamps, etc.

There will be a trial run of the proposed Alabama/Tennessee run on Saturday July 20.  We will be starting in the Statesboro Scottsboro, Al. area near the intersections of Hwy 72 and 35.  Start time is 9AM.  Ron768 will post the exact location with information as soon as he determines a good spot.

TopNotch will be traveling over from the Atlanta area on Saturday morning and there may be others, so if you want to drive over with other Fieros, contact TopNotch.  There are a number of people from Alabama that want to make the trial run, also, including a couple of Corvettes.  Could be interesting.  Correction:  RFTH trial runs are always interesting.

Meeting place for those going on the scouting run will be at the Chevron gas station which is near the intersection of 35 and 72 in Scottsboro. As you near 72 there is a light with a Home Depot sign. Turn right off 35 at that sign and follow the service road to the left. Go in front of the car dealerships and continue until you see the gas station. There are several fast food places there if anyone wants to get something to eat before the scouting run. We can top off with gas and go. There is also a Wal-mart behind the station. The lat long is 34 4009.70N  86 0030.92W. according to Google Earth. See everyone Saturday morning at 9 am!

The mailing address of the Chevron is:

Trotters Chevron
24860 John T Reid Parkway
Scottsboro, AL 35768

It's about 3.5 to 4 hours travel time from areas around the Atlanta perimeter.

Hey if anyone talks to Aerodonamic, ask him if he got any of the 25th stickers while at the 30th.
We got a couple extra and I know he wanted one.

I tried to message him here but either I flaked or he hasn't checked messages lately.  Could be either.

Thx

Sounds like we are getting new people interested over there in Alabama.  As much as I would like it to stay closer to home, I am willing to drive further for fresh blood.

I am going to miss the GA run too.  I am picking up the convertible this weekend....then it will be down for about a week while I rebuild the front end.  I can't drive it any more until I get that alignment and new front tires.  When I was loading it on the trailer up in Michigan, I noticed some cords showing in one of the front tires, and I refuse to put new front tires on that sloppy front end.

Sharon, Don doesn't do text messaging.  I don't think his phone has the capability.  It would probably be best to call or email him.

Yesterday was a historic day in Run For The Hills.  In an email to Ron, former guru of the Alabama Fiero Club, David Hunter said that there had never been a Run For The Hills using Alabama as it's venue.

The route chosen was very much akin to a road course.  Lots of high speed straights, then getting into some good, tight, tire squealing curves.  Plenty of need to keep a tight grip on the seat, both the the curves and the sharp drop-off's as you crested a hill.  Anyone familiar with the roads could have gotten more speed and maybe gotten airborne.  We encountered several trees in the roadway, just around some sharp curves.  Ron, I'd suggest you get those removed before we use this course.   :)

Here's the group as we parked behind the restaurants and businesses in Lynchburg, Tn.
Front Row, left to right:
David Brill,  Formula Owner (Billy), Ron768 (Ron)
Second Row, TopNotch (Pat)
Third Row, Fierofool (Charlie)

This Saturday, July 27, we will be doing the North Georgia scouting run.

We will meet at the intersections of Georgia 400 and Hwy 60 in Dahlonega, Ga.  We will meet at the service station on the Northeast corner of the intersection, be gassed up and pulling out by 9 AM.  All are invited to come along, even in a different sports car.  The more input we have about the scouting trips, the better we can make these events.

Once TopNotch and Ron768 decide which venue we will be using, we will make other plans for activities.

The plans are to tour the Jack Daniels Distillery if the Alabama/Tennessee venue is used.  If the Dahlonega, Ga. venue is used, I will be trying to make arrangements to tour the Bill Elliott Motorsports Complex.  If that can't be arranged, I'll go for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Being closer to NC would be slightly more convenient, but a JD tour would be awesome.

I might be on the lookout for a driver slightly less aggressive than Greg to ride shotgun with on the run.  I still want it to be fun, but I am recovering from surgery.  The doc said 6-8 weeks before normal activity (and he knows about  the cars) but Greg's driving really wears me out on these runs.
However, I  do NOT want to ride in the sight-seers group ;D

It's Plot #: g85206.
Also, if you go to take the distillery tour, afterwards you can just give them that number at the Squire's Lounge and they'll grant you access. Just say you are Squire Kienlen and you'll get the grand treatment! :D

For those that don't visit Pennocks:

Deadline for reserving a room at the discounted rate at the host hotel is August 20. This area is very popular throughout September and October, so it would be near impossible to find a room within 10-15 miles. At least at a reasonable rate. Likely the rate for one night will be more than our rate for 2 nights and the Holiday Inn Express next door is already booked up.

The agenda:
September 20---Arrival and meet and greet. Socializing and doing final checks and tweaks on the cars.
September 21---The actual day of Run For The Hills. The evening festivities include a group sit down dinner at a local restaurant and drawing for the limited edition event coffee mugs.
September 22---Return home.

Still waiting to hear from Earnie Elliott's daughter for a possible guided tour through the Elliott Racing compound on Saturday evening.

Following past event schedules, we've usually had our meetings start no later than 8:30 and we are out and gone by 9.  I'm not familiar with the surroundings, but I think it will probably be in the parking lot of the hotel.  If anyone arrives after 9am, they will probably be left behind.

On a different note, after a number of calls to Earnie Elliott, Inc., the contact I have for arranging a guided tour through their facilities has not been available at any time I've called, nor has she replied to any requests to call me.  At this time I will have to say there's no likelyhood that we will be able to get a tour through their facilities.

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame museum will be open till 4 PM on the day of our run (I checked). If conditions are ideal, and slow-pokes don't get in the way, we could be done with the run by 2:30. If we then headed for the museum, we could get there by 3. I know that's cutting it close, but it's something to think about.

The Dahlonega Appalachian Jam will be going on in downtown Dahlonega on the day of our run. If we can't go to the racing museum after the run, maybe we can go downtown and enjoy some bluegrass music.

The racing museum is in Dawsonville.  The City of Dawsonville has rented out the racing museum for a fashion show on Friday and Saturday.  The curator said he had to move all the cars outside and cover them during the show.

I wonder if that lady I spoke to on the phone knows that?

I went to the Elliott Racing compound and spoke with Ernie Elliott who told me to call back and talk to his daughter, Julie Hamby.  I've made a number of calls without result.

After leaving the Elliott compound, I went to Gresham Motorsport Park and met with Jeremy who told me that next weekend the Porsche club has reserved the track and it's a closed gate event.  Unless you're driving a Porsche.

I then went to the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and met with Mr. Pirkle.  It's part of the Dawsonville City Hall and is owned by the city.  He said the city had rented the museum out for a fashion show on the 21st and 22nd.  He had to put all the car outside until after the show, so we wouldn't be able to see them.

Are the Racing Museum and the Racing Hall of Fame and Museum 2 different entities?

I'm thinking that the lady really didn't know. I called the number on this page (http://www.thunderroadusa.com/).

Taken from the page you linked to:

Gordon Pirkle, local businessman and long time racing enthusiast, can often be seen taking groups of people through the museum and sharing his love for this segment of Dawsonville?s history.

First sentence in the writeup says it's in Dawsonville.  It's the same place I went to.  Not in Dahlonega.

Following past event schedules, we've usually had our meetings start no later than 8:30 and we are out and gone by 9.  I'm not familiar with the surroundings, but I think it will probably be in the parking lot of the hotel.  If anyone arrives after 9am, they will probably be left behind.

OK-thanks!   I plan on being on time or having a sad pitiful rise all the way back to Waleska.

I ran your sentences together and my mind said it was in Downtown Dahlonega and if we couldn't get in the racing museum, we could just sit down and listen to some bluegrass music instead.

Sorry for the comprehension error.  Wait a few more years when you're my age.  You'll see.

Actually, it was my fault. I think you read my message about the music before I corrected a typo. After all, I'm old too.

What time are the raffle and dinner scheduled?

Raffle -- afternoon, after the even. If it's raining, we may have to have it during dinner.
Dinner -- 6 PM at the Smith House.

I'm not sure we can make the run Saturday but I think we can join you for dinner at the Smith House.

Hope to see you there.

This was one of the more interesting runs I have been on. According to Fierofool (unofficial RFTH historian), this was only the 2nd run done in rain. And because it was raining, I didn't shoot any video. (There would have been a windshield wiper swiping across the video.)
But we had fun on the curves any way. And who knows -- maybe we'll do a re-run on a clear day. (We've been known to do that.)

We had one car break down in front of a country church...

It kind of looks like we're going to a prayer meeting.

We hope Elder Mooney didn't mind us parking on the church lawn.

After the run, we had excellent food in the Smith House in Dahlonega...

There's an abandoned gold mine in the Smith House...

A mirror lets you peek down the mine shaft.

The day was topped off by a gorgeous sunset.

...and after the Saturday night sunset, a Sunday morning sunrise from my window.

Thank you Pat, for a good selection of roads.  I do think they are worth another visit on a clear day.  Thanks Ron for taking the time to come all the way from Huntsville to help with the scouting and real-time runs.  That's what makes the run so enjoyable for those who attend.

Thanks to all of you who made this RFTH 18 happen!
The lunch and dinner spots were wonderful.
It was a great route/run despite the rain and I'm sure that another run on a clear day is in the works!
Thanks to Pat and Charlie for some really nice pix and sharing them with us.

Anyone who wasn't there, we missed you and hope you can make the RFTH 19!

To all who joined us for the run , Your Welcome! Make sure that you watch the board and join us at the meetings for more updates on the "Booze Cruise" . Thank you Pat and Charlie for all your time and efforts in making the Georgia Fiero Club the best club that I have ever been a member of.

Thanks to Pat and Charlie for working out the logistics.
I told Charlie, last night, that this is probably one of my favorite routes of all time.
Dry pavement would have been a big "plus", but it was still fun.

Donster, tell you what!  Next year we'll hold it in the Swiss Alps if you'll cover our hotel rooms and loan us that A10.

Dragon and Marianna, wish things had turned out better for you and the ABS light hadn't come on.  It would have been great to have had that Mini along in the group.  It was nice socializing with you at the hotel.  Hope you enjoyed the Vineyards tour you took.

JJBlue, it was great to see and talk with you again, too.  Maybe we can convince you to get another Fiero, since obviously they still occupy a place in your heart.  Thank you for the donated raffle items. Looks like they're thinking about a Redux, so maybe you can bring that Challenger along.
