Title: ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE, ANYONE?
Post by: Fierofool on January 11, 2015, 01:00:42 pm
I've been asked to explore other venues for a St. Patrick's Day Parade.  Aside from the Atlanta and Savannah parades, the only other parade in Georgia is the Dublin Parade.  They have festivities beginning March 1 and ending March 31, but their 2015 parade will be held on March 21.

Dublin is just outside Macon on I-16 toward Savannah.  From the Galaxy Diner, travel is about 150 miles and about 2 1/2 hours.  Travel time would be about the same for most of our West Side club members.  East Side members might want to travel down through Madison and Milledgeville using US 441, and travel time for us would be a bit less.

I've sent an inquiry about the club entering and the cutoff date for entry.  I need a solid commitment to participate so that I know if it's worthwhile to submit an entry.  Maybe our Augusta folk can join us on this one, being about a 2 hour drive coming down through Wrens, Louisville and Wrightsville.

As our Atlanta participants know, the interior of the car is really unimportant since viewers are kept at the curb and minor blemishes and imperfections can be covered with streamers and decorations.

They have replied to my email and ask that I give them a call.

Again, anyone interested?

I could enter 2 cars if a driver for one could be supplied.

I spoke with people from Dublin, this morning.  They would be pleased to have us in their parade.  Information and entry forms are on their way.

Because of other activities on the morning of the parade, theirs doesn't kick off until 11AM, so we would not have to arise any earlier than we did for the Atlanta parade.  Leave Atlanta around 8 and get there around 10-10:30.  Their vendors are centrally located so there's lots of food close by.

I've been to the Dublin Parade.  Had a great time.  Lots of crafts - the quilted car cover was my favorite - and TONS of food.
I'd like to go again.  Be nice having a place to sit.

I have the application form for the parade.  I was just talking with Ronzrx11 and if the club enters, we will pay the entry fee.  There is a requirement that the vehicles be decorated in a St. Patrick's theme.  We generally purchase static cling shamrocks and decorations at the dollar stores and plaster the cars with them, along with green paper mache streamers and balloons.  These decorations help to camouflage minor imperfections.  If you can, try to find some green Saran or stretch wrap to cover headlights with.

TopNotch can provide 2 cars.  Ron said that he'll see if Susan will drive TopNotch's second car and there will be Ron's and my cars.  AeroDon said he will also go.

I would like to issue a personal invitation to CowsPatoot, pgackerman, f85gtron, metalblue85gt, scottb, Redraif, and Raydar to join us.

Any others reading this are welcome, too.  I need to have a definite YES not later than March 1 so that I can get the application submitted and accepted.  Based upon my correspondence with the people in Dublin, I'm very sure we will be accepted.

I would also like to have two young ladies to walk ahead of us carrying the club banner.  Paul, how about your girls.  The wife could go along and make it a full family day.  Or maybe one of your girls and Ron's daughter.

Club members, you were all in a tizzy when we were no longer accepted by the Atlanta parade and you wanted another.  Here it is, so come on and get with it.

The Dublin parade shouldn't take too long.  At the end of the parade we could just cluck 'n strut on down 441 and get to the Fitzgerald event.  Think there would be any chicken plucking events still going on?  :)

We currently have 7 vehicles.  We still need two young ladies to carry our club banner for us, otherwise we have nothing to let the spectators know who we are.  Paul, your youngest and Ron, maybe your daughter?

Dollar Tree has already put the static cling shamrocks and other items out for sale.  We must have our cars decorated for the parade.  Go grab several packages so we can cover our cars when we get there.  If you can't find them at Dollar Tree, try some of the other Dollar stores or Walmart, but Dollar Tree has always had them every year.

Again, if anyone can find some green Saran Wrap, grab several rolls and let us know on here or maybe if some of the shamrocks in the static cling kits are large enough, we could cut them down to the size to cover headlights.

While I've been away from the house, Brother Ray has been busy collecting stuff for decorating the cars for the parade.  He's found some big rolls of green transparent wrap to cover our headlights.  It may take several layers to make it look green when the lights are on.  He has also found some stick on wiggle eyeballs 6 inch in diameter that can be stuck to the headlight and some static cling shamrocks small enough to decorate the headlights of other cars.

For any who want to pick up some decorations, Michaels, Hobby Lobby and again most of the Dollar stores have items.  We need some rolls of papernache ribbons if someone would get 5 or 6 rolls.  Any decorations you buy, we can have the club reimburse you.  Just keep the receipt to give the Treasurer.

Pat and Linda now have a 3rd Fiero and have offered to include it in the parade if we can find a driver for a stick shift.  Any takers?  I think the club can cover the cost of fuel so the only expense will be whatever you spend for your personal needs.

The current list of definite entries are:

Ron R--1
Charles--1
Ray--1
Pat--3
Don--1

I will submit the entry tomorrow with just those unless I hear from someone else with a definite answer.  Paul, do you plan to be there?  Ron S.?

My wife will (probably) be attending, but she wants to watch from the crowd.

Great! 9 cars will make a good showing.  I'll work on finding someone from up here to carry the banner for us.

Don't forget, go to the dollar stores and find decorations for your cars.  TopNotch and I have green film to put over our headlights but we need the cars decorated.  Keep your receipt for reimbursement, everyone.

It's looking like Roger may drive Pat's 3rd car.  I spoke with two other board members and the club will provide fuel for the third car.

That's great.  They will walk along in front of our cars carrying the banner.  I have a lightweight set of rods that we mount it on.  It will require one person on each end.  Now, I've got to try to find another.  Be sure she dresses in green, too.

All the cars must be decorated in a St. Patrick's theme according to the application, thus the reason for the static cling shamrocks, green paper streamers, etc.

I have the information for our starting point and entry into the parade.

We should be in place by 9:30 AM.  The parade kicks off at 10:30.

First Church of the Nazarene
312 Telfair Street
Dublin, GA 31021

This address is the same as US Hwy 441 South.  When coming in on I-16 from Macon, take Exit 51 and turn left.  Go straight for about 2 miles and the church is on the right.

Coming in from the north on US 441, it might be best to take the bypass until it dead ends into Telfair Street then turn left to the church.  This is because the downtown parade and festival area will probably be clogged or blocked off.

Good.  I just got an email from Jennifer to confirm our application for 9 cars.

TopNotch and GrannyLinda went to Party City over the weekend and found a transparent green table cloth that they think will be ideal for covering headlights.  They will report back on the suitability so we know whether to search further.

Just be sure the daughter has lots of green.  I'll try to pick up a couple of clear ponchos just in case it might be a rainy day.

Are they clear so that green clothing will show through and are they small enough for 2 girls the size of Ron's daughter?  The girl from my church is a little bigger than Ron's daughter but the same size should fit them.  I also have two black and white panel umbrellas that they can carry if needed.

We only had 2 years where it rained at the Atlanta parade.  One year it rained during, and the other it rained until just before and started back just as we finished.

Pat Said The Table Cloth Won't Work.

That Will Work.
I Also Picked Up 2 Cardboard Tiaras For The Girls That Are
Carrying Our Banner.
The Tiaras Are Green With Shamrocks On Them.

Sorry.  Nothing can be thrown from the vehicles.  The application says specifically no candy may be thrown.  It's probably a safety concern of children running into the path of a car to get candy or anything tossed from a vehicle.  We had the same restrictions in Atlanta.

In all my years, I believe it was a first.

Pat and Linda provided some rolls of green streamers and some static cling decorations for the cars and a roll of green film.  Today Ray and I did some testing and the film will work very well.  We'll cut some pieces and have them ready to place onto the headlights.

Everyone check our your vehicle's cooling system to be sure it's properly filled.  I will be bringing coolant and water in the event anyone overheats along the way, but if you have coolant of your own, bring it along.  If you have concentrate, premix it before putting it into your trunk.  It can be pretty embarrassing to have to pull over or out of the parade due to overheating.

A tip to keep the vehicle from overheating during the slow and often stop and go of the parade is to disconnect the compressor cycle switch on the receiver-dryer.  It will allow you to press the NORM button of your climate control, making your engine cooling fan to run but not allowing the AC compressor to run.  Since we will be driving the parade with the windows down in what is predicted to be low 70 degree temps, you won't need the AC.

This morning I received a call from one of the parade officials to let us know our position in the parade.  We are # 71 out of 155 as of this morning, so right now, we're right in the middle of the parade.  He said he and his wife were looking forward to seeing our Fieros.  His wife had owned one at one time and had always wanted another.  She just recently acquired her Fiero.

When we get assembled at the Church, we need to quickly move up the street to our position which will be marked on the street or sidewalk with #71.  For that reason, we all need to be there at one time so we can move out between 9 and 9:30 to our spot, then get our cars decorated and the banner set up.

Bring your radios and a chair to sit in while we wait or after the parade.  Oh yeah, did I remind you to bring your radios for communications?  We'll start out on channel 7 and later change to another if the traffic is too heavy.

I got the exhaust system cobbled together, but the carbs need completely gone through.
It's been asleep too long, and when it woke up it was pissed.

LOTS OF FUN!  the luck of the Irish must have been with us because no sooner than I pulled in the drive, the ignition control module crapped out!  I had an original acdelco modual on hand that i never removed from the original distributor. I think I've learned my lesson and will buy an extra to keep in the car as a spare!

Glad you had the spare Ron!

It was good to see those at the parade and we missed those who could not make it.
The weather could not have been better and the crowd was AWESOME!!!
Although there were some issues with cooling systems, they were overcome and I
hope all had a grand time.
Thanks to Charlie for organizing everything with the City of Dublin, GA.
They were very nice hosts.

It was very good to see that Don and Daryl made it, even though the cops wouldn't
let them in as late arrivals.

I hope everyone had a safe journey home.

Ron and Susan finally made it home after multiple stops to let the 86 cool off.  Don and Darrel left later with Roger, Pat and I and our ETA home was 6:30.  I called Don just before 9 and they had only made it to the Six Flags area on their journey to Douglasville.  Slow traffic and overheating for them, too.  I got a call from them just about 9:20 and they had just arrived home.

With everything going on, I only managed 3 pictures.  Hope we can get a collection from the rest of the group and the parents of Summer Kelly who were taking pics and video.  I'll talk to them tomorrow at church and see if I can get theirs.  In the meantime:

There are so many of you to thank for making this day.  First, I'd like to thank those who guided us through the day.  Summer and Sophia who carried our club banner.  For their first time, they did a superb job.  They seemed to be having a good time.  I saw a lot of interaction with the spectators.

Roger and Brenda, Ron and Susan, Ron S. and Paul and Toni for making the long trek.  Pat and Linda for providing almost half the cars in our group.  Don and Darrel for making the trip even though you knew you might make it in time to join in.

I think we were well received by all except the one passer-by who remarked that our cars were "Ugly".  I think it might be possible that there were more sidewalk spectators at the Dublin Parade than at the Atlanta Parade.  Shall we do it next year, I believe we need to have a printed map of the city so that we may find our way to the staging point or to find lost souls to guide them in or rescue them.  Maybe the club should purchase a couple of used GPS units to loan out when we do these little junkets.

An earlier rally time and a driver meeting would help allot. Then, we could work out our figure-eights and doughnut burn outs. Then, all we need are special hats!
I had a GREAT time. I think we earned a whole lot of exposure. My car's ugly, but Paul's isn't and his attracted a lot of attention after the parade. That's what it's all about!

Paul and Toni, thanks for such a good documentation of the day.  The first time this kind of coverage of our Parade participation because our people are all in the cars.

Ron:  To post pictures in the thread, go to the Administrator's Announcement section at the top of the message board.  There is an image posting application there.  Download it.  It will show up as PIP but anytime you post with it it will have a Georgia Fiero Club tag line.  You'll just have to resize any pictures to about 100mb to download them in your message.  They are there for anyone to see without having to register and log in.  This can help to bring in new members, seeing some of the things we actually do.  And the pictures will be there until the message board goes away.

Did anyone get a head-on shot of that Cross-Eyed Bumblebee?  The best shot I could see was in Toni's number 107.
