Title: February Meeting and BBQ Run
Post by: Fierofool on January 20, 2015, 09:52:22 am
Well, I've been trying to drum up interest in holding our February meeting at Heavy's BBQ in Crawfordville and meeting there with the Augusta group, but I've not had a response from anyone that they would be interested, so I'm not pursuing it any further.  I guess the meeting will be at The Galaxy.

I'm sorry to hear that, but understand. I was holding off until hearing weather or not my daughter had an audition on Feb 14, of which, i would have to attend.
Paul and i have talked about it and thought it sounded like fun.
Ditto for the parade in Dublin

If you and Paul entered the parade, there would only be Pat and I from up here.  At least that's all that's spoken up so far.  That's just not a good showing.  Eight to 10 cars at a minimum.

Bummer about Heavy's. I've been wanting to go.  Gave us a reason.   A.H. Steven's State Park is close by.

My wife is/was willing to attend even though it's Valentine's Day.

Another bummer on Dublin St. Patty's Parade.  Can't commit two months in advance.  But interested.

We've still got time to slide into the St. Patty's parade if enough want to participate, but it's probably too late at this point to reschedule the location for the February meeting.  I spoke with Aerodonamic today and he said he's willing for just the two of us to make the trip down just to meet with the two of you.  And the BBQ, of course.  How about the 3rd Saturday of February?

I hate to be a Debbie downer, but that's my daughter's alternate audition date. I'm sorry. I really want to go to Heavy's!  Don't give up on me just yet!

How about you guys picking a Saturday?  Just as long as it isn't the 14th of February.  I'm sure Don and I will make it, maybe others, too.

Is President's Day, Monday Feb 16th out?

Title: Re: February Meeting and BBQ Run
Post by: Fierofool on January 21, 2015, 08:28:14 pm
Do you mean the 16th?  Is President's day a federal holiday?  Some may not be off on that day.  I'm up to it on the 15th or 16th if anyone else up here's willing.

Yes, I meant the 16th.  It is a federal holiday.

Need to check if Heavy's is open.  A lot of places around here close for Holidays and Sundays.
f85gtron needs to see if he has the day off.

So, let's start all over again.  It's probably too late to move the meeting, so can we do the BBQ run on Sunday February 15?  With people off on Monday for President's day, there would be no real push to get back quickly.

Who's in for Sunday the 15th?  Rain or Shine.

If we can get a group together, I'll skip church.  Today was my first day back in over a month, because of colds and flu circulating among the congregation.

I tried to call to verify any hours (since NONE are posted anywhere...not even on yelp), using the 2445#, but no answer. There's ALLOT of recent bad reviews, some of which describe getting sick. I want to check it out, but I'm starting to wonder just how adventurous i really am!

I did some searching and found that, too.  Four in the family all got stick?  I did some more and found these on Trip Advisor.  I also found 161 likes on facebook.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g34873-d518864-Reviews-or10-Heavy_s_Barbecue-Crawfordville_Georgia.html#REVIEWS

I had talked with them when we started to set this up and they said they were open on weekends, year round.  I called them at
706-456-2445
They are open weekends, but I don't remember their hours.  I can't find any listing of hours but I'm sure they would be open during the mid day hours.

Those reviews are much more promising than the others, but only date to 2011. The less favorable postings are more recent, which leads me to wonder if Heavy died and now his kids are trying to run it?  Just speculation, if course......

How about Greensboro?  Not much further for the Augusta folks.  I remembered a BBQ place in Greensboro, so I looked it up.  Holcombs is right downtown where some of us up here will be coming into Greensboro.  Hwy 278 at the intersection with Hwy 15.  I'll call to see what their hours are.

I Google mapped it and it's about an hour and a half from Douglasville and Augusta and for those up my way.  A little longer for Scott, by about an hour.  I just called and Holcombs isn't open at the moment.  I'll check again after noon.  If all else fails, there's a McDonalds at I-20 and Hwy 44.  I always got decent food there  :(

There's some great food at the Linger Longer Steakhouse at the Ritz-Carlton in Reynolds Plantation.  I've eaten there a few times, but only as a guest.  I'd never pay those prices from my own pocket.

It looks like the meeting will be at The Diner on the 14th and somewhere yet to be determined on the 15th.

I've been calling the BBQ place and don't get an answer.  They may be like many BBQ stands and are only open Thursday thru Sunday.  For Ron and Susan, both places only have the NC vinegar based sauce.

Shall we make it  Heavy's BBQ and get there around noon time on Sunday, February 15?

So, the February meeting is as scheduled at The Galaxy Diner on the 14th.

The BBQ Run is the next day, Sunday the 15th and we will be going to Heavy's BBQ on Hwy 22 near Crawfordville, Ga.  It's Exit 148 off I-20 East.  We will turn South on Hwy 22 for maybe a mile to Heavy's BBQ on the right.

Don says he's coming out to my house and riding with me.  Scott says he's coming down this way and joining up.  Pat, want to come out this way and we can meet you at Chico's on Hwy 316 and cruise down together.  Ron R., would you want to come out here or meet us on I-20 at Exit 98 near Covington?  Randy said he was traveling down I-20, so Ron R. you might want to connect with him and we can hook up with the two of you in Covington.

Once I know who is coming and where we're meeting up, I can plan our hook-up and travel times so we all arrive there at the same time.

Exit 98 on 20 sounds good.

Post by: Fierofool on January 31, 2015, 11:25:25 pm
Do you want to contact Randy and hook up with him and we'll meet you at Exit 98?

It's about 1 and a half hours from Powder Springs to Covington, to allow time for you and Randy to connect.  Then about another hour to the BBQ place.  You guys would need to leave your place about 9am at the latest to get to Covington around 10:30.

For us up here, it's about an hour to Covington so we should leave Auburn around 9:30 at the latest.

Sorry guys,. but I won't be able to make it.  Melanie is back in the hospital again.

Don isn't feeling well but Ron R. and Scott B will be meeting up with you.  Scott is bringing the ECM and the bump stops for the headlights.  I can pic up the ECM when we come down for the St. Pats Parade.

Dollar Tree has already put the static cling shamrocks and other items out for sale.  We must have our cars decorated for the parade.  Go grab several packages so we can cover our cars when we get there.

I have noticed that tastes are different, in different areas.  While we were out of town, the locals highly recommended a particular restaurant.  We tried it.  Not terrible, but certainly not good.  We tried 3 other restaurants, and one of them had food that was fairly good.  Not particularly to the taste of the locals, apparently.

My wife and I stopped at a BBQ on a trip.  The bbq was a vinager based,  not our taste.  We like the bbq sause based.  Anyone had that happen to them??
Title: Re: February Meeting and BBQ Run

The vinegar base is Carolina Sauce.  Ron768's wife is from NC and that's her preference.  There's also mustard base.  Some restaurants have mustard, vinegar and tomato base sauces.

Personally, I like the tomato base.  Sweet and Spicy with a good bite.  Here at home when I make my own BBQ, I mix original hickory smoked sauce, half and half with either Lip Lickin' or Sticky Finger BBQ sauce.  Can't remember which one it is, but I get the one that you can see the flakes of pepper in it.  Then I have pickled jalapeno slices that I top it off with.

Bandanas had 6 BBQ offerings.  I do not like any of them.  Just give me some Sweet Baby Ray's original...
