Title: 7730 ecm installs
Post by: f85gtron on November 24, 2015, 10:39:46 am
I'm offering 7730 ecm swaps as a service now.
I'm still working on pricing because there are a few options that open up with a 7730 swap, such as:
Code mask,
Dizzy vs dis ignition,
Cooling fan control,
To egr or not to egr and digital control,
Digital cruise control option.....

Tuning is part of the package as well, so you'll have a fully functional vehicle when all is said and done.

The wiring is labor intensive and a pain the the rear, so the costs are high.

Any suggestions and feedback are much appreciated herein.

One of my upcoming projects is to install a 7730 in my 4.9 car. Sometime.
If you happen across a 305 or 350 TPI MEMCAL, I have a V6 MEMCAL I'll swap with you. (The knock modules are different. I'd prefer to start with a V8 module, even though I may not even use  a knock sensor.)

Variations on a theme were some of the questions I had.  What's operational in a base install?

If just the car is delivered to you, do you provide these items and what's the additional costs.

7730 harness connectors to convert from stock connectors.
87 or 88 Duke ECM tray to mount 7730.
DIS coil pack and module.
DIS oil pump drive plug to replace the distributor.
New plug wires since DIS would require a longer set of wires.
Make knock sensor operational.  This is assuming a 3.4 since it has the knock sensor where the 2.8 would require aftermarket unit.

EDIT:  I should have said "Install crankshaft sensor on front of engine.  This is expensive for the 2.8 since it's an aftermarket custom item."  The 3.4 block has a port in the side of the block for the crankshaft sensor.

Make ECM control fan.
Delete vacuum EGR and provide Digital EGR Valve and adapter.
Digital cruise as opposed to stock cruise control.
Will stock cruise work with the 7730?

I wouldn't recommend running a knock sensor on a 2.8.  I spent mucho time trying to get it to work, and finally did, but the valve train is so loud that the setup continued to retard under false knock constantly and wasn't worth the trouble at all.

I would say a base install is:
7730 Install Repinning
Modify existing ecm tray
Ecm fan control
Digital egr
Dizzy setup
Factory tune

Factory cruise will work with 7730

If all items are supplied by you, along with the car, just labor and tuning costs will apply.

Dis would be an option and would be extra,
Digital cruise would be extra,

Fresh baked brownies (no nuts) Will warrant a discount and extra attention to detail :)

Raydar, I'll keep my eyes open for an 8 cyl knock cyborg thingy

I did find something out recently that may help you a little. You'll probably be looking at an $88 code mask (app) to run the 7730, which probably requires the digital egr, but I've found that running $8D code mask allows you to keep the original egr. Either way will be fine, the digital egr will allow more tuning control and diagnosis, but drivability will be the same.

The car Ron R. got his ecm from was equipped with digital egr so he should be good to go.

Ron where did you find all the right color and gauge wires?

I prefer digital too because of the diagnostic capabilities and upgraded, clean look

Drove the Fiero in today.  WOW!

The 7730 upgrade keeps impressing me.

Enjoyed listening to it in traffic.
Enjoyed keeping the car in 5th.
Enjoyed how it pulled.
Wow.

The response from a 7730 is incredible.

F85gtron has been perfecting my tune.  Before the chip went in I wouldn't get to 5th gear until ~50mph.  Made me wonder why I bought a 5-speed.  Now, anything over 35mph is fair.

Makes me want a six-speed manual.

Oh, Thursday I received a compliment on how the car sounds.  ;D

Caution about lugging the engine instead of downshifting.  More people lose engines due to the extra load but diminished oiling at low rpm.  It seems to be more common in 5-speeds than 4-speeds.

Hey There,

Im eyeing this  http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum4/HTML/073684.html

I'm sure I could spend some time reading (and dont mind doing so) but i thought this might be a shortcut and possibly a sales pitch op for OP.
3.4 pushrod 88 , I would go with digital EGR and Distributor. WHat other decisions do I need to make, and what am I lloking at $$ wise to pay to have this done?

What hardware is needed for tuning?

I think ill read up some more tonight, but any kind of jump start would be appreciated.

Thanks Fellas

Was that Tuner Pro that you had running on your Samsung Tablet?
I haven't seen a version for Android.

That was an Asus tablet running Windows 10.  .....which reminds me....

Aldldroid (android) full suite for datalogging, editing, and burning. (New product, so still has some minor bugs)
Tuner pro rt (Windows)  full suite for datalogging, editing, and burning.

Interesting. Thanks!

I just bought a Tab 4, about a month ago. May have to look into some of that.
(Already have Tunercat on a Dell Netbook. It does everything I've needed. So far. I fear that may change, however.)

F85gtron, did you answer these questions and the things you brought up in the first post, somewhwere else?

Oh. I never got that far.  Everyone here in the club took it on themselves. I just provided moral support. I would charge around $550 for the basic described. More if no brownies.
