Title: Introduction and my misc items
Post by: GTRS Fiero on September 25, 2016, 04:10:16 pm
My second post here.  I've dealt with several of you, over the years, but didn't know about this forum.  I've had positive interactions with those people, so I'm giving this forum a try.

Thanks.

I debated if I should start the thread with ”My name's GTRS, and I have an addiction...”, but I figured that, given the forum, that goes without saying.

I'm a car guy.  I've owned lots of cars, and used to drive everything.  Times change, and I live a quieter life, now.

The Fiero wasn't my first choice, but of all the cars I'd driven, I most enjoyed an '85 Camaro 5-speed with the 2.8HO.  Not a fast car, by any means, but fun.  It was stolen, unfortunately.  Some years ago, I wanted to buy a similar car, but they wanted $32K.  Not worth it, to me.  I found other cars, but they weren't as nice as mine, and didn't have the HO engine.  Insurance was high on the Camaro.  I'd always wanted a GT40/Fort GT.  They're fun to drive, but they were well beyond my price range--even to maintain.  So, I got a Fiero.  I didn't even get my first or second color choice.  Through several Fieros, I've never managed to get my first or second color choice.

My Fiero is unique.  I've never seen another like it.  While not completely stock, I'm trying to recreate a previous Fiero.

Welcome to the forum.

Can you post a picture of your Fiero?

Where-abouts do you live?

Welcome to  our forum. Please come to our next meeting, and if you have a Fiero, please bring it.

Don't flame me.  I was asked to join here.  I'm in the STL area.

I'll try these pics, just taken.  Thanks to Paul McKibben for his help.

Um, I don't have a resize on here.  They were too big.

Since the pics didn't take, it's a white '88 GT auto.  My feet are too big for a manual.  I have just about every option, except leather seats and front compartment light.  My emblems are all GTR-S.  I've never seen another GTR-S gold edition Fiero.

If your pictures are on your phone, you can text them to 678-four-six-four-3780 and I will post them. Or you can email them to me(at)patswayne.com.

I think I violated one of the precepts, already.  AFTER signing up, I found a notice on here somewhere that I should use ”Fiero” in my logon.  Oops!

Edit: fixed.

Thanks.  The license plate doesn't really emit light.  That's from the flash.

Not stock--or perfect--but unique.

That's for people we don't know.  Right now there are 70 people sitting out there with monikers that disprove any Fiero association.  They won't get approved.

All kidding aside, I've never noticed that. Probably a good thing.

That's a relatively new thing.  We were having so many applications that it was difficult to sort through every factor that shows up in their registration.  We actually had thousands of registrations.  Hundreds a week.  Lots of adult material sites, and some who used the same prefix on username and just changed a couple of numbers attached to that name.  There was one particular one, carpenty1234, that ran through that name without thousands of progressive numerical variations.  We have the ability to look at the country of origin, and sometimes the actual owner of the email or ISP.  I think Pat added some filters into the process, but still there are those who get through.

I recognize some of the applicants from other forums, and some, I've invited to join, like tshark.  I have taken to sending a questionable applicant an email, asking them to reply to a few questions that are Fiero specific, a little more in depth than the initial application.

How do you deal with people who are new to Fieros, who don't know how to spell Hulki's last name, etc?  I don't remember if it was that question or what, but there was one question when joining that I wasn't sure of.  I didn't look it up, but typed in something, and things continued.  I'm not sure it was verbatum correct.  If you ask when the first Fiero was built, you could get a wide range of answers--many correct--that may vary by year, day, and time.

I suspect that when Charlie or Pat is doing the screening (as opposed to a machine that is looking for "absolutes") it's fairly easy to tell who is real and who is a spambot or other nefarious entity.
Glad you are here, regardless.

I'm curious about something, tshark. How good are those headlights on your car at illuminating the road at night? They look good, but my night vision isn't the best, and I need good headlights to drive at night.

They seem better than stock.  That having been said, they aren't aimed properly, and have other issues I'm not happy with.

With the stock lights, I could see they were up, and light was coming out, but the dim illumination they provided wasn't enough.  I still have the stock lights.

I have housings like these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-7-X6-DIAMOND-CUT-BLACK-HALOGEN-SEALED-BEAM-HEAD-LIGHTS-LAMPS-H4-CG7-/351803459823?fits=Model%3AFiero&hash=item51e91ec8ef:g:EDQAAOSwyLlXpl4p&vxp=mtr). They replace stock sealed beam bulbs, and allow you to use replaceable H4 bulbs instead. Only I have LED H4 bulbs in mine instead of regular H4 bulbs. I can see better with the whiter light the LED bulbs make.

Probably not.

When I was in college, we played a lot of billiards.  I was really bad--and am much worse now, since I haven't played in many years.  When I'd shoot, the cue ball would head right toward it's intended target, then  hop over or around the target at the moment before impact.  In one instance, the cue ball ”passed” its target on the rail.  Some people thought I did this on purpose, and gave me a nickname.  This nickname stuck, even after the other college nicknames were dropped.  Eventually, I started using the nickname, as here.

Are those the "Projector Retrofit" lights? Or Danyel's? Or are they "one offs"?

Danyel never completed his 60/90mm sets.  At least not that I saw.

I see a lot of good things in this forum.  PM's come through to email, the new thread/post indicators are nice.  The color scheme is bright.  The site is very fast.  It alerts you of messages almost real-time.  You can see recent posts easily below while drafting a post.

People seem positive.  Too bad I'm about 600 miles away.

I do have a difficulty with changing pages, due to the dimunitive size of the page numbers, but perhaps I'm missing something.

LOL!  I just found the forum profile.  Lots of interesting questions there.  IQ?  200, of course.  Just kidding. But it took me a moment to realize what they wanted.  I had no idea ICQ was still around.  I quit using it many years ago.

Other features are that when you click "Post" you will get a red prompt that someone has posted a reply while you were typing, asking you if you want to continue.

After you post, you can go back to the top of the page and click the orange HOME to keep from going through the back button steps.  Expand your screen to better separate the page numbers.

I think I made it to St. Louis in about 8 hours.  We left here on a morning, and pulled in at The Hampton Inn on Pear Tree Lane in St. Ann before dark.  And I had 3 women and a dog in the car.  You're close enough to make Run For The Hills, next year.

Good to know about the Home button.  Yes, that's helpful.  I've already had the popup.  IMO, these things make the user experience much better.

Yeah, I can expand my screen, but apparently I'd rather complain.  I mean, that was the only obvious room for improvement.  Page navigation is the only area of improvement.

Oh.  Next year, the plan is for Fierorama.  2018 - 35th, 2019 - Shipman

Of couse, we'll see what actually happens.

Today weighed heavily on my mind.  I thank God for the relatively peaceful transfer of power today.  I pray for peace, cooperation, and understanding, going forward.

My kids watched the entire last 18 months of the electoral process unfold.  Now that they're old enough to write, they had to take notes on each candidate, and develop their own opinions.  Some of the issues escape them, of course, but so do some of the nastier aspects of the last 18 months, fortunately.

For the purposes of my kids' education, all personal aspects of the candidates were left alone, and only the issues were debated.

My kids have come to know the names of world leaders in other countries, and of people in both the incoming and outgoing administration.  My kids have been watching the vetting of Trump's nominees.  Before we watched, we discussed the position and duties of the nominee.  Then the kids were given a chance to write their own questions.  After each session, we discussed the questions that were asked.

I have 2 take-aways:
1. Even my kids want to know why these people can't get along.
2. My kids are innocent.  I wish Congress would have asked some of the questions my kids asked.

My kids got to see the electoral process at work, and learn a bit about our government.

Knowing your age, I suspect your kids are close to legal age.  Good to know teenagers are interested.  Maybe suggest that you attend some of your city Council meetings where they can better see the workings of government.  Officials are more accessible, and individuals have more input and aren't as easily ignored as in The Swamp.  Once they become 18, they could volunteer for some of the city boards, like Planning and Zoning or Zoning Board of Appeals.  That's how I got my start in politics back in '93 and learned an awful lot about government.  I still serve on one of the boards I was appointed to in '93.  It was an unpaid position until just 5 years ago.  I served on 3 boards at the same time, with one County board only paying $10 per month.  Not rewarding monitarily, but very satisfying in a civic responsibility way.

My oldest is 7.  It'll be a while.  That having been said, they attend the council meetings.  We just attended one in November.  The councilman lives on my block.

The kids weren't too happy to go, this last time, until I explained to them that it affected them, too.  Specifically, the nearby park's playground and splashpark.  The city spent over $1 million on repairs and upgrades, and the park is in terrible condition.  I had the kids write out their questions, and told them who was in charge.  The kids paid attention.  When the director of public works and the parks super took questions, my kids raised their hands until called upon, then asked their questions.  I didn't envy the officials in answering the questions.  The parks super started stammering--particularly when my kids insisted that the playground equipment is still falling apart.  The police chief actually had to ask the parks super if he was trying to intimidate my son.  My daughter wanted to know about the holes in the climbing rock.  The super insisted that the rock was solid.  My daughter persisted that there were holes.  The super finally admitted that the ”rock” was metal mesh with a coating, but insisted that the holes had been repaired.  My daughter stood her ground, just a bit nervously.  The super asked if anyone else had questions, and a lady said, ”no, the little girl is doing just fine.”  My daughter made her point, and my son did well.  When it was the turn of the chief of police, my son asked why it's OK for them to speed in our neighborhood.  After the chief happily stated that all his officers were there and introduced them, my daughter asked what police officers do.  The chief explained that they protect the citizens.  Then my daughter asked who is protecting them now?  The chief did not like that question, but I was proud of my kids.

Our council meetings draw about 20 people.  Usually the same people.  Meetings are every 6 months or so.  My kids have been attending since they were born.  Local politics are no different.  The promises never match the results.  The city never holds itself to the same standard that they hold you to.

Just today, I received a citation for ”improper trash storage”.  It was mailed, of course.  The code enforcement gestapo couldn't be bothered to ring the bell and speak with my wife.  I had to call to find out that they were fussing about a box and some bags in my carport.  The box was a delivery from FedEx (who also doesn't ring the bell), and the bags were rock salt.  The excuse was that he couldn't read what the bags said, and that the box would decompose.  I explained to the code enforcement super that this was another example of what was discussed in every council meeting: that his nonproductive jerks cite hardworking citizens for things out of ignorance.  Unless, of course, they could tell me what is inside the box.  So, court it is, again.  We go through a super every year or so.  They cited me when I replaced the brakes, when I replaced my front door, etc.  Meanwhile, they have potholes that both my shoes would fit in, the sidewalks are falling apart, they failed to do their leaf pickup, and the trash trucks leave trails of trash wherever they go.

It's kindof neat on here that you can delete posts.  I deleted 2 test posts on this thread, a few weeks ago..  What's really cool is that you can fix thread titles.  I was wondering how things got SOLD in the subject line.

I also see threads have been moved from one board to another, with apparently a redirect from the old location to the new location so you can find it.  Very cool!

Mostly.  Donster and Duchess moved to Germany and it seems we've all lost touch.  Donster was once our club president.

TopNotch and GrannyLinda are married to one another.  President and Secretary/Treasurer

Redraif and Tinkerbell haven't been active with us in about 2 years.

RobsFieros is president of East Tennessee Fiero Club in Athens, Tn.,  but can no longer participate due to having been nearly killed when hit by a car.  http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Archives/Archive-000003/HTML/20130314-6-073394.html   Our clubs were very active, participating in each's events.  Rob's a close friend.  We talk often.

F85GTron and PGAckerman life in Augusta and comprise part of the Central Savannah River Area sub-chapter of Georgia Fieros.

FieroGTB sold his 308GTB and went back to his old racing days.  He found a 71 Dodge Colt that he's refurbishing to look like his old race car.  Not to race, but just to show.  He and I are in constant contact with one another.

OldOne has temporarily to permanently moved to New York State with his daughter, due to the failing health of he and his wife.  I still talk with him periodically.

Roger is on our Board of Directors.  His wife often joins him in our events.

ScottB is a member of our Board of Directors

2500fps is a transplant from New York State.  Board Chairman

We have several Steves registered under various usernames, but the only active Steve we have is also known as Raydar.  Steve128 sounds familiar but isn't in our registered members list.

But yes, we know one another, personally.

I grouped TopNotch/GrannyLinda, Donster/Duchess, and redraif/Tinkerbell because I knew of or suspected relationships.

I further suspect that redraif's family life came first (as it should).  She seemed to be very busy.

Good for you, keeping in contact with so many people.

Steve128 is on a different forum.  My bad.  Ron768 is of whom I was thinking.

Somehow, I thought oldone was younger than you are.

I don't see Atlanta1 on here, but you apparently know him, also.

I looked for other Fiero forums.  NC's is just one person posting occasionally.  The ETFC's forum uses the same software as this forum, but seems to be half done on a budget host.  Not really an active forum.  Jet City's site is active, but doesn't have a forum.  NIFE similarly updates their site, but no forum.

STL isn't as big as Atlanta or Chicago, but we have nothing, in the way of a Fiero club.  Sad, really.  JR is usually deployed or our of town, Rrunner moved, and the rest of us don't meet.  I think the furthest from me that anyone has showed up from was Independence (3.5 hours' drive).  Mark Krug is moving or has moved to NY.  2 people showed up once.  Still, that leaves peoole in Granite City, Greenville, Collinsville, O'Fallon, Cahokia, Troy, Quincy, Bloomington, Edwardsville, Belleville, St. James, St. Charles, and Columbia.  So, 15 of us within 2.5 hours' drive from me.  Life gets in the way.  Schedules conflict.

It's good you all can not only manage to meet regularly, but keep it up for so many years.

OldOne is younger than I.  I think at this time, I'm the oldest.  Maybe DeShoe is a few years older.  He hasn't been active until recently, so we don't know a lot about him, yet.  He's a quiet one.

Ron768 and Ron768.5 (Susan) live in Athens, Alabama, about 30 minutes west of Huntsville.  They participated when they lived in Fayetteville, NC, Raleith/Durham, NC, then they moved next door to me before they moved away.  Ron768 is our VP  Ron is a helicopter mechanic and has moved for job opportunities.  Ron is actually an Atlanta native.

Atlanta1 usually pops up only when he has needs.  Only came to a meeting or two in the duration, usually to get help or advise.  I've been trying for years to get him to participate in meetings, events and the forum.  Hopefully, I can get him to join us in the St. Patrick's Day Parade along with a local guy who runs the Corson Registry.  Atlanta1 has a 355, a 328 and a Corson rebody.

When you say Steve128, you aren't talking about Grumpy Ol' Steve from Maine are you?  84Fiero123?  If so, yes, I know him personally.

Was Duchess on the board?  I saw that Anne left, creating a vacancy, a while back.  I didn't check for dates between that and Donster's move to Germany, nor do I know that Duchess is Anne.  Just a random thought.

Duchess and Anne are the same.  German pronunciation Ahnna.

Replaced the fuel pump on my wife's truck.  ”Robust” model fuel pump required.  No, ”robust” fuel pumps don't last longer, move more fuel, or anything like that. They have a shield. ”Robust” is a euphemism for more expensive.

My poor Fiero needs new tri-links.  I hope TFS has them in stock.  The rubber on mine is gone.  Probably why the back end behaves so oddly.

Back when I had my Dodge truck, I had to replace the fuel pump.  I was amazed at how "robust" it was.  About the size of a quart jar and probably weighed 3 lbs.
Title: Re: Introduction and my misc items
Post by: GTRS Fiero on February 26, 2017, 09:19:34 am
This fuel pump had ”robust” in the product description.  I suppose the fuel pump wasn't technically bad, but the valve wouldn't close, and there was no pressure, because the fuel would just cycle back into the tank.  Since the valve also required dropping the tank, the pump has 230K on it, and the pump is 14 years old, it was time to replace.  Not my favorite.

I have a love/hate relationship with my work, but a good relationship with food.  The candy bowl and cookie jar are nice, as are the morning donuts.  I'm not much on bagels, or those cheese/egg things.  I don't like the parfait --too  highfalutin'.

This morning, Egg McMuffins showed up, and breakfast was catered (for the board, but everyone got a plate of goodies).

We have this thing where drinks and snacks are served.  I call it Thirsty Tenant, but it's on Thirsdays, and it's officially Thirsty Thursdays. Coming up soon is a baseball thingy for the first game of the year, for which baseball foods will be served, and the game put on the big screen.  We just finished our annual BBQ contest.  I got into trouble for putting shredded cheese and chilli on the hot dogs.  Apparently, the chilli is supposed to be eaten separately.

We have an annual Christmas party, with prizes and games and lots of catered food.  There's a summmer BBQ, reunion w/food trucks, and catered St. Louis Bread Co lunch 4 days a week.

Coffee, sugar, creamer, cups, spoons, plates, straws, etc are also provided.

There is a vending machine, but it doesn't get much business.

Some of our clients give us tickets for baseball, hockey, football, concerts, etc.  I don't use the tickets, but can usually find someone that wants to go, so the tickets don't go to waste.

Today, we had a drawing, and I think I hit the jackpot.  $600 in gas cards.  That was third place.  First place won housecleaning for a year.  Second place won a bunch of wine, but they're an alcoholic, so they tried to trade.  Fourth place won gift certificates to a bar, but he's a Muslim, so he declined.  Who knew a Muslim could enter a contest?

Today was supposed to be a costume contest, but almost everyone forgot.  We do Elf on the Shelf, guess the money in the jar, penny wars, door decoration contests, nerf wars, dunk your boss, talk like a pirate day, and other activities.

Sometimes, the perks make the job bearable.

This (http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/097379.html) pisses me off.  I have no dog in this fight, but I still get tired of it.  I think this type of thing polarizes the Fiero community, and drives newcomers away.  Not this particular incident, but a similar incident led to my joining this forum.

I agree.  I haven't followed sardonyx247 and really didn't know he was a vendor, but this isn't the first time I've seen Rodney go after someone.  Years and years ago, I had reason to call him about a cable I bought.  The ball stud broke off when I tightened it.  He denied that it was his fault, saying I tightened it too much,  though the stud was actually just a piece of threaded rod, drilled out, re-threaded inside and a smaller stud screwed into it.  Tightening the retainer nut was exerting all the force against a tube.  Out of graciousness, he sent me a new design that had a solid stud on the ball.  He also contacted me one time when I said that the available bump stops for Generation 1 were too soft (I never named any vendor) and my replacements solved the ticking problem.  There was no way his could be too soft because they were Viton.

I hate to see any Fiero product vendor leave.  Most likely, if Rodney leaves, many of the items he's designed will be held proprietary and not released for reproduction, so he'll make the whole community suffer.  Guess he'll be going into more competition with The Fiero Factory.  They went Mustang and Corvette.

Earlier this week someone on PFF disagreed with me.  They sent me a PM, explained why they thought I was wrong, and we finally came to an agreement.  I was wrong, but he didn't call me a Stupid Arz while trying to make his point.

I don't think Rodney's going to abandon Fieros. He's still posting on Pennocks (although maybe not as much) and has recently joined Facebook, which was responded to by a long list of greetings and well-wishers.

Recently, my wife has been hinting, hinting.  I finally figured out that that's what she was doing.  Anyway, these ”hints” have become less subtle, to the point of pointing and poking.

She is expressing concern about one of my relationships.  No, not the Fiero, but she's been expressing concern about the quality of the relationship.  The word ”healthy” was used.  I'm sure it's a healthy relationship, for me.  Specifically, she used words like frequency, persistence, and timing.  I know I've been persistent, and certainly as frequent as possible, but timing has never been my forte.  9pm isn't good timing?  I've tried to be discrete, but apparently I'm not very good at cleaning up after myself.  My kids are in bed at 9pm, and I'm not at the house during the day.

My wife continued with talking about consequences, detrimental this, that, and the other.  She even went so far as to suggest moving on and variety.  I like the familiar.  This relationship predates my wife by many years.  Despite what my wife says, I've always viewed this as a healthy relationship.  Then she brought up something about the example I was setting.  Finally, she took me to the scale.

Apparently, I'll be eating fewer strips of bacon, more meals during the day, and fewer meals after 9pm.

What's your limit on bacon strips?  I think the wives confer about these things.  That's why they come up with these ideas after their Womens' Conferences.  At car shows, too.  What do you think they're talking about?  Ever notice them looking at you sideways while talking with other women, and they get quiet when you get close?

I like the thick-sliced, hickory-cured bacon.  Cooked not too crispy, not too soft, and not dripping grease.

I think Womens' Conferences are unhealthy for me.

I didn't used to have any interest in the Indy Fiero.  I mean, a 4-banger doesn't normally cut it for me, and I'm not a fan of the interior color combination.  Of course, if it came with one of these, or looked like TopNotch's...:

But I'd want wheels that look like these:

Not nostrils on the roof scoop, though:

From the rearview mirror, I'm not sure if this would look better or worse:

And I'd want a functional scoop with strobe light:

I read that the light housing is an aircraft part.

The next problem is that I already have a white Fiero.  I like red, but the decals and those wheels would look terrible on red.

Worse, I know where I could get a nice Indy, but it's been maintained as original, and I don't want angry visits by people carrying pitchforks.

Decisions, decisions.

I had a nightmare, last night.  One of my clients has over 3,000 networks to handle things in a particular facility.  There are reasons these networks must remain separate.  In my nightmare, marketing got their way, and we had to add almost 900 more networks, as well as change the network scheme.  I was SO RELIEVED today, when I verified that I didn't have to make this change.  For those unfamiliar with what's involved, imagine using the same area a city subdivision currently occupies, but adding one third more houses, changing the street names and numbers, and keeping everyone separate and happy.  Oh, and have the post office still deliver everything to the correct people.

When it rains...

We had rain today.  Torrents.  Cats and dogs.  The brand new roof at the office was damaged by a falling tree.  Water poured into the server closet.  What're the odds?  It's in the middle of the building.  Covered by insurance, but what an annoyance!

I went by the UPS store to mail some stuff.  As I babked out, there were some odd noises.  I have bikes in the back of my (covered) truck that had been leaning on one of the boxes, so I figured that the bikes were adjusting for gravity.  A few turns later, I wasn't so sure.  After a few starts and stops, I decided the sound (which was terrible by this time) was rotational.  The sound seemed to come from the right rear.  I looked under the truck, and saw nothing obvious.  So, I drove home, grinding a bit the whole way.  When I turned onto my street, there was a clanking noise.  I was going to back into the driveway, but the terrible noises made me rethink that.  I pulled off the right rear wheel, brake caliper and bracket, and the brake drum.  Parts fell out.  What used to be the brake shoe ring with pieces of brake shoe, pieces of the adjuster bolts, part of the screw that holds the brake shoe ring in place, and other pieces of hardware.  Joy.

I don't have a way to get to the screw that holds the shoe ring in place, because the mount plate is in the way.  I have axle bearings, so the entire exle must come out, or I can take it to the dealer, because they have the correct tool.

The neighbors had some pipes burst, so the ground is all torn up to replace.  It smells like sewage outside.

Opened the mail.  Doctor bills and test results.  No good news there.

Wanted to take a quick ride on my ATV.  Flat tire.  Somehow, it has the valve stem broken off.

Went to make pizza.  New oven, but the oven isn't working.  Called out for pizza.  This is the first time I've ever found 3 pizza places that can't make pizza.

Went outside, and hey, the sun came out.  I should've waited to open the mail.  I would've gotten better news.

Things are looking up.  Outback steakhouse is going to deliver supper.

We had rain today.  Torrents.  Cats and dogs.

I used to have a friend in Germany I would chat with, who said that the expression there is "It's raining ribbons". Good translators of English material would translate "It's raining cats and dogs" to "It's raining ribbons" (in German, of course). But bad translators would translate it literally, and many Germans wouldn't know what to make of that.

I think the ”cats and dogs” expression is not commonly used.  There's a term for expressions like that, but it escapes me at the moment.

”ribbons” in that context would have made no sense to me.

What?!!!  That's terrible!  I do not understand how anyone who believes in a loving, forgiving Diety can also so wholly reject their fellow man.  We changed parishes because, during Easter season, the pastor told me ”you are the spawn of Satan.  Your thoughts and ideas aren't welcome [here]”.  I don't know what cause they gave you, but for me, I had privately told the pastor that I didn't want more Latin, which is what he was pushing.  As a result, he kicked me out of the choir in a very public manner, used me in several homilies, humiliated me in front of my kids (scaring them in the process), denounced me behind my back to the choir, and threatened me with lawyers.

Some places just aren't a good fit.  We tried one parish, but the ceiling was too low.  Supposedly built like Noah's Ark.  The Noah's Ark restaurant didn't even make it.  Anyway, this parish was comprised of characters.  Not characters like country people.  These people proudly wore their character.  At a costume party, or some international state event, this would have been fine, but I'm not into plumage at church.  Then the pastor started on politics.  In point of fact, I think everyone there agreed with him, but I don't want to hear politics at church.  Not a good fit for me.

I think the key words are ”church home”.  Honestly, I'm having a hard time feeling like any church is home.

Apparently, OMG stands for Our Monthly Gathering.  It's a dinner.  Tonight, in fact.  I had a very different idea of what the expanded acronym OMG was.

I frequently hear political issues being brought up at church.  Not so much from the pulpit, but more often from my Sunday School teacher.  Though I may have some decided opinions on the subjects, I don't comment.  Like you, I don't want politics in my religious beliefs, nor my religion telling me what I should do politically.  I don't get involved with the church politics.  Though last year I served on the Budget Committee and a search committee, and have been asked to serve on the Budget Committee again this year, I stay out of the other social issues.

My Father-In-Law was well versed on the Bible, but did not attend church.  My Mother-In-Law did, along with several of the 7 kids.  Four were Baptist, one Lutheran, and two Catholic.  They chose their own church.  My Mother-In-Law received a letter from the Baptist Church where she was a member.  The next Sunday was the only time my Father-In-Law attended church.  He interrupted the whole service and delivered a scalding sermon to the Minister, in front of the whole congregation.

The letter was in regards to the fact that my Father-In-Law had gotten a raise.  The church felt that in light of that raise, they would have to increase their tithing or lose their pew seating in the church.

I do pray daily, however. I am a Christian. (I describe myself as a "recovering catholic.") My faith is between me and my God.

I believe that any church that engages in politics should lose its tax-exempt status. No exceptions.

BINGO!

I was on a panel a while back with some other lay people, an athiest, an agnostic, a pagan, and ministers of various faiths.  We all had to identify our beliefs up front, then we were asked questions.  I identified as me, which generated an instant argument.  I elaborated that my faith was between God and myself.  The moderators asked a bunch of questions.  I'll just say that the results weren't expected, at all.  Coming up, I've been asked to give a talk about witness.  I have mixed feelings about this.

I didn't intend to turn this into a discussion about religion, but I think it's safe to say that a lot of people have been turned off by religion.

Our Minister doesn't preach about politics, but he will occasionally ask if a passage in the Bible doesn't compare to something current.  Pointing out the prophecies.

In Sunday School class, we have a beginning period of socializing about our week and happenings.  If someone brings up political subjects, it sometimes gets detailed and opinionated.  No arguments, just people stating their views.

I, too, think that when a Clergy urges the congregation to take specific political actions, whether it be in local, state or national politics, that particular house of worship should be stripped of it's non-profit status.  If that Clergy does it outside the house of worship, as an individual, there should also be penalties directed at the individual.  This includes Falwell, Sharpton, Jackson, Graham, and any other Clergy or so-called Clergy.

I agree that so many have been turned off.  I think the TelEvangelists are a big factor.  Many of them live very extravagant lifestyles.  Many have been exposed as not really being a person of purity as would be expected of Clergy.  Some continue on with their ways, even after they're exposed, and their congregations accept it.  Creflo Dollar had a huge multi-million dollar mansion in the Atlanta area, but that wasn't enough.  He asked his congregation to buy him a personal jet.

Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church was the subject of a child sexual abuse investigation.

Remember Oral Roberts?  "God, please forgive me for I have sinned!"

Probably Billy Graham and his son Franklin have so far escaped any of the negative expose`s that have had such an impact on organized religion.

I agree, but I do like the invocation before races.  If I were to be elected to some office, AND I had a trusted clergyman in attendance, I'd want their blessing, both for the ceremony and the celebration dinner.  I am a sinner.  I need all the blessings I can get.

I don't feel that's religion interfering with politics.  Our invocation at council and other public city and county meetings general ask that they be guided for the best of their jurisdiction and for everyone's well-being.  Not that the Council or Commissioners vote in a particular way.

I'm sure that any denomination would be welcome to present their own invocations.

Ha, ha.  No, but there is a brand new in the bag wheel bearing on the left shoulder about 5 miles further down.  It's been there for a week.  I was tempted to pick that up, but figured a. the owner would be back for it (I don't want to steal), and b. it probably sustained damage during the fall.  Still, it looks to be in perfect condition.

My ATV has problems with flat front tires since I bought the ATV.  The ATV shop sealed the bead with black goop.  Several times.  Plenty of tread on the tires.  No dry-rot.  After a few times of this (at $10 per tire each time), they said the wheels were dirty, so they wire-wheeled the wheels.  Flat when I picked them up.  So, they said buy tubes.

I bought tubes.  A few days later, they told me the tubes I brought in (which had looked new, with nice flat folds, and were clean black rubber), were old and already had holes in them.  Odd, because they didn't mention that when I took them in, completely unpackaged.  They sold me a set of their tubes and installed them (without valve caps).  When I picked up the tubes I'd taken in, they were filthy, and yes, looked used.  The ATV made a ride around the neighborhood 3 Saturdays ago (on the sidewalk).  2 Saturdays ago, my son was sweeping the porch, and hit the valve stem of the left tire, and the air audibly leaked out in that area.  The right was still good.  The next Friday night, the right was still good.  Last Saturday morning, the right was flat.  I took both tires to the ATV shop.  They ordered new tubes.  I picked them up on Saturday.  $93.xx!  They offered me the old tubes, which were filthy.  Got home, put the wheels on, let the jack down, and the right one was flat.  No hissing or anything.  I put my foot against the right tire, and the rush of air leaving the sounded like heavy breathing.  I took the tire back to the ATV store.  First, they said I'd probably hit a rock or thorn or something.  Then, they said the tires had a bad bead, due to so many mountings and dismountings.  After I reminded them that these had tubes, they said something in the tire had probably caused the flat.  I asked if they checked for that before installing the tube, and they said that it must have been something that came into the tire from riding.  I reminded them I hadn't had a chance to ride on it.  They refunded me $46.

I'm thinking the ATV shop didn't clean anything.  I further think my tubes they gave me back were good, but they flattened them.  Am I being too hard on these people?

I give great tips!  I think it's time for a new ATV shop.  I've heard that you can get a tire on the bead by using a ratchet strap, but I've never tried.  New tires and wheels are ordered, arriving eventually.  I hope soon.  It's prime time to ride.  No dust.  My kid sister says MO is a swamp, but much of the year is very dry and dusty.

A friend just bought 6,000 head of cattle.  I think he's lost his mind.  He knows nothing of cattle ranching.  I know little.  I was last on a farm more than 30 years ago, and only have notes to refer to.  Mostly what the old-timers told us.  This friend wants me to come help out.  No running water, no electric, no gas on the property.  No well, either.  Just some ponds, 2 sinkholes full of trash, and a bunch of broken-down fences.  I told him he needs to fix the sinkholes, find someone who knows what they're doing, and clean out the waterholes.  Also that he needs to start small and give me a map of his land.  I'll run the fenceline, mark on the map where the fence needs major repairs, and do the simple fence repairs.  I'll mark any haying land.  Still, the property needs to be checked for plants that are poisonous to cattle.

6,000 head of cattle is a LOT of work.  Ours were grain-fed twice a day with the high-gain feed.  They gain about 3-5 pounds per day.  Still, that's 2 years before you can sell for any profit, but he needs about half for breeding.  This friend has no tractor, and there is no barn, so he'll have to pay someone to do his haying.

I really can't imagine how he and his wife (both city people) plan to handle 6,000 head of cattle.  They don't live near the property, either.

Let's hope that at least the fences are fixed before the cattle arrive. Otherwise, there'll be free cattle for others running around.

Yeah.  Chasing loose cattle isn't fun, and my stock dog died in '96.  Fortunately, as long as the grass and water are good, cattle don't usually wander far on their own.

I'll run the fences, but I'm not digging post holes.  At least, not until my shoulder is long since healed.

There's something fishy.  I'm about fished out.  Fish, again, for supper, of course.

I picked up new front tires and wheels for my ATV.  If these go flat any time soon, I won't be happy.  No more excuses.

After raining for the last 5 days, the sun broke through late yesterday.  Things are looking up for the weekend.

Five days of rain means lots of mud for the ATV.

Lots of mud, yes, but I haven't ridden the ATV in the mud.  I don't like having to clean the mud off the ATV.  I cleaned most of the mud off when I purchased the ATV.  Not fun.

I stopped riding my bike in the rain, because the roads ended up being so dirty.  That dirt took forever to clean off the bike.  Of course, it isn't very safe to ride a 2-wheeled conveyance on wet roads, anyway.  May as well ride on ice.

I was asked to sing with a choir at a parish some miles away.  No big deal on my part, but the request, the welcome, and the appreciation really felt good.  This may seem like a small thing, but sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.

Yes.  In many ways.  Our church usually sees about 50 people at services.  Today our little ones sang and used sign language in a series of songs prior to the beginning of the Pastor's message.  The church was packed.

I grew up attending a small parish with about 50 people.  I greatly prefer it that way.

This evening, we attended an event put on by children.  The event was many weeks in the works.  Afterward, I proudly watched first my son, then my daughter pitch in to help dismantle the scenes, re-arrange tables, and put out the chairs.

My son asked me if I'm a Fiero person.  I had him clarify what he meant.  He asked me what Fiero people do.  I reminded him of the various activities we've participated in with Fiero people.  He then decided that he and my daughter were also Fiero people!

Over the last few days, I went back through all my topics, and all my posts.  I've edited for typos (I think I got most of them), but mostly for readability.  I changed image sizes, and put breaks between pics.

I also removed a topic I'd created that I have since decided didn't fit in well with the goals of GFC.  Sorry about that.  Oh, and a few posts in another topic.

I really appreciate that this forum is upbeat and friendly.

Pairs of animals are gathering.

Stocked up on fish.

I'm putting together a packet of goodies for my in-laws.  I'm trying to think of something for everyone, but stuff they don't get there.

I picked up some team caps for various sports (Blues, Rascals, etc), some T-shirts, and various items from events and places here.  I picked up a book of Paul Bunyan tales.  For the kids, I picked up some Home Depot workshop projects, some Steak'N'Shake hats/cardboard thingies.  I included a piece of petrified wood from my collection, and some interesting stones from the family geologist.  I got caps from John Deere, Boeing, CAT, etc.  I picked up caps from some local TV and radio stations we toured, making sure to get them autographed.  I got a Grand Canyon T-shirt, and a miniature Arch, as well as a miniature Mount Rushmore.  I picked up a Historic Route 66 cap, a Gateway to the West cap, some things from Meramec and Fantastic Caverns, a Mark Twain book, a pair of Made in the USA Levis jeans (they ask for a pair, every time I visit), a cowboy hat (they thought only movie stars could get these), and my junior rodeo belt buckle (they've never seen a big buckle, or a rodeo).  I'm including a special spoon from Natural Bridge in VA.

I picked up some magazines.  It turns out, a lot of the magazines guys here enjoy aren't available there.  I picked up some girly magazines, too.  Yes, I got the illustrated versions.

I'm having a case each of Budweiser Beer and Schafly's Beer delivered.  This could be interesting, since it's a Muslim country.  They can get both these beers, but I'm sending a special limited run of each.

I was going to send a bear rug, but that wasn't going to work out, so they'll get a genuine hunter's cap and a homemade beeswax candle scented cinnamon.  I'm having a quart of homegrown clover honey delivered.

2 dozen bagels from STL Bread Co will be delivered, guaranteed fresh.  I tried to send some fresh beef steaks from here, but that wasn't feasible.

Yes, of course I'm sending a Fiero hat and T-shirt.

I dunno, what do you send to people in other countries?  I've never tried to put anything like this together before, but it was sortof fun.

Over the years, there have been hints, and certainly a lot of teasing about my shape and size.  I've had problems getting clothes to fit for most of my life.  The unfortunate nicknames that were attached to me were distasteful at the time, but I thought I'd moved beyond that.  Whatever my self image, sometimes reality sets in.  There's nothing like having it spelled out for everyone to see.

My friends got me a shirt.

Some friends, huh?

Yeah.

Two can play at this game.  I'm going to bundle up a bit to fill out the shirt, and wear the shirt to their black tie gala.  I found a red goofy hat, some Bermuda shorts, some clown shoes, and a very large tie.  Since they gave me the shirt, I can only assume they want me to wear it.

Today, we discovered that, due to my tenure, I have 40 days of vacation remaining.  This would be good news, IF we hadn't just landed 3 projects on which we had been working for the last 4 months.  I have until the end of the year to finish these projects.  One of the projects, we gave the client a list of things that needed to be done to get them up to par.  We agreed to do the things in stages, so we quoted them for the first 3 of 6 stages.  Their board approved all 6.  I really hadn't intended to do that much work, this year.  Bye, bye vacation.

Nothing in that front parking lot.  That's looking away from the large storage lot where all the Fieros were kept, but some recent pictures I've seen reveal that it is less than 1/6 of what it used to hold.

States are very different.  In 2 months, other than Georgia, I have driven in/to the following states: Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, and Kansas.  Aside from the road surfaces, signage, topography, population, and building construction, the states have a different feel.

Surprisingly, it did not hurt or bleed as much as I expected.  I was wearing a white shirt, or course.

It was not bad enough to stop me from going ATV-ing yesterdsy.  Still cleaning up the mud.

I voted to fly there, but for some reason, the company refused.

It's official!  There is nothing to make you feel old, like having it certified.  An AARP card arrived, with my name on it.  I checked, and it is real.  April Fools' was last month.

Apparently, the card comes complete with many....benefits?  Memory loss, loss of vision, difficulty hearing, etc.

On the other hand, Jeff Gordon was sponsored by AARP for several years, and he's younger than I am.

My son got me to get on the scale today.  The scale does not like me.  Maybe it lies.  It showed "Err2".  Considering it has a max weight of 300 pounds, I dunno.

I want an old analog scale, like the one I grew up using, that had the rabbit-fur cover.

While browsing ebay, I saw a black Fiero.  Nice.  I've never managed to own a black Fiero.  I was going to say any black vehicle, but then remembered that my truck is black.  Anyway, scrolling down revealed that the Fiero was a GOOSE.  I mean, it's in CANADA!  At least the steering wheel was on the correct side.  It's my curse.  No black Fieros for me.  Over the last 6 years or so, there have been several in which I was interested, but none worked out.

I had been bidding on something Fiero-related on ebay.  Actually, I just set a max bid, and ebay did the bidding.  I thought other users could only see part of our username.  Anyway, I got a message that I should not bid against other forum members.  What could I do?  I replied back, "Me, too, Pot."
