Title: Manuals
Post by: GTRS Fiero on November 12, 2017, 10:00:08 am
I have 3 '88 service manuals, and an owner's manual, and a maintenance schedule.

I have several sets of '86 owner's manuals, a service manual, 2 DIY books, a maintenance schedule, a supplemental book, and an owner's manual update book.

Where is the rest of that stuff for the '88?

Do those other items exist for the '88?

Yes they do.  I think I provided a full set with the Lil Duke Coupe, and we also raffled a full set at RFTH.  There may even be a set around here for the 3800 Formula.

I looked carefully at the raffle items for RFTH 22:
3 Light Sequential Turn Signal Control-New
1 Gray Performance Sound Control
1 Beechwood Performance Sound Control
1 Underdash Performance Sound Wiring Harness
1 VGC Beechwood Auxiliary Gauge Pod with Harness
1 Fiero Blvd Heavy Aluminum Street Sign
1 Hot Wheel Pavement Pounder Car Carrier with Fiero.  Unopened
1 American Graffiti 1985 Fiero GT by Motor Max
1 Pair Tyco Slot Cars
1 I Love My Fiero GT Button
1 Gold Fiero Nose Emblem  New But Blemished
1 Gold Embroidered Fiero Patch
1 Fiero Parking Only Heavy Steel Sign
1 1:18 Road Collection Fiero GT Unopened
1 88 Pontiac Product Book Fleet Edition Ring Binder with inserts.  Excellent
1 88 Fiero Owners Manual.  8 of 10 Quality.
1 84 Fiero Owners Manual and Maintenance Schedule.  Slight Cover Blemishes
1 Set of 1995 Fiero Store Product Brochures with Price List.
1 Set of 3 Fiero Owner Magazine, First, Second and Third, Fourth Quarter.VGC
1 Fiero Connection Magazine Featuring Mariana Martin’s White Horse.  VGC
1 Hot Rod Magazine March ’84 Featuring 140 MPH Fiero.  New In Sealed Wrapper
1 Brookland’s Road Test Magazine ’84-88 Fiero.  Sealed.  Excellent
1 Pontiac Road Cars Magazine, 1988 Edition.  Sealed.  Excellent
1 Gary Witzenburg Fiero Pontiac’s Mid-Engine Sports Car.  Sealed

I didn't see a supplemental, or a DIY, or an owner's manual update book.  I suspect that the owner's manual update was only for previous years, probably something to do with the recall.  I traded a full set.  I don't foresee having another '86, but I think those were hard to find.

I will accept any Fiero Manuals that are Extra's that are Not Needed by the current Owners, The more detailed the better so an owners manual would not be as Important to me as a Service Manual.  I will pay for a Manual If that Helps Early modles + an 88 would be Nice

I sent 'tech' a Pm That I can Help. Helping a Buddy from School with his 71 Road runner up in Talking Rock now as the weather Permits( It's in a Building But no weather Proofing,But does have a lift.)

Here are some interesting manuals.  Sorry about the blurry pics.

This comes in the thick version, like this, and in a 2-part version, and in a condensed version, as seen in another pic.

Of course, there are also the Spotter's Guide, and Gary W.'s book.  There is also an '85-'87 book.  It's a thin little thing.

The big thick ones are the factory service manuals, commonly referred to as Helms Manuals.  At one time we had several years editions that were donated to us.  They were sold to raise funds.  We still have an 88 edition that goes with the 3800 Formula.

The Haynes and Chilton's books were once readily available at the auto parts stores, but I've not seen any on the shelf in several years.  Usually the only place to find them is on Ebay or Amazon.

I have a full set of the 86 and 87 books that come with the cars.  I did have a full set of 85 and 86 books, too, but I included the with cars that I sold.

The picture of the red car with that strange decklid is interesting.

What is the 22P?
Title: Re: Manuals
Post by: Fierofool on November 13, 2017, 05:36:43 pm
The 22P is an exploded parts view of the Fieros, with GM part numbers and in some cases like screws, bolts and nuts, it gives the sizes, also.  If you want a copy, I can send you a file.

1 Pair Tyco Slot Cars

There were slot cars? Who has these, & do they need a track to run them on? ;-)
I haven't gotten the track down in a long time, but once the VW is out of the shop I'd love to get back to running some laps.

We raffled a pair of Tyco slots at RFTH.  They're about the size of Matchbox or Hot Wheels cars and they do need a track.  I believe they have a double contact for power and the slot pin is only for keeping it on the track.  There was a red one and a black one.

LOL! I know the cars need a track, I was asking if the new owner needed one or a place to run them...
Crap: I was going to post a photo of my track but the image is too large.

The big thick ones are the factory service manuals, commonly referred to as Helms Manuals.

If the thick one is the Helms, what are the 2 thinner ones, and the single thinner one?

For those that haven't seen a 1988 owner's manual

This is the holder.  Odd that none of the greys match.

Here is the Owner's Manual in the holder.

It could be in better condition.

Here is the maintenance schedule

There are a few cards.  I have the sales paperwork, and may have the salesman's card somewhere.

The thick ones marked Service Manual are factory.  The thinner ones are probably do it yourself maintenance and service guides.  I see some Haynes and Chiltons manuals that are good for all but major teardown repairs and rebuilds.  The small ones like in the 88 folder are mostly for people who don't do their own troubleshooting and repairs.  Tells you the location of features and their function, how to set the radio, etc.

The manual in the top pic should be the same as the similar one in the bottom pic, but the top one is much thicker (about half an inch).  If you get a reprint of the Helms manual, they split it into two.  I don't have them, so don't know how thick they are.

I'm missing the '88 Fiero Product book, the '88 Fiero color chart, the '88 Fiero DIY manual, and whatever supplementals.  I like to have all the stuff.

Somewhere, I have some various Hot Rod and things magazines with Fiero articles.  Those are probably in the library.

I believe the thicker one has better electrical schematics. Yum-yum! I'd love to have one.

It's a darn good thing somebody labeled the service manual "Book", because I may have gotten confused.

Interesting.  I thought Mark Corbin had moved on, but there is a third edition Fiero Spotters' Guide, for 2017.

Some of the service manuals state ”text only”.

I have the revised 1984 Fiero maintenance schedule, but it's much larger than the maintenance schedules for 1986 and 1988.  Was that normal for 1984?

Anyone seen the Clymer Fiero manual?

Well, my manuals may not be in the best condition, but this should help them.

I have the electronic version of the 22P from Fierofool, but sometimes it's nice to have one in your hands.  These are about ready to return to dust, so probably only for use when the wind isn't blowing.

I have the 22P you sent me, as well as the hardcopy one in the picture.  The DIY and supplemental should be different.  At least, they are for 1986.  I'm just not sure they exist for 1988.

The one I sent you has a lot of scans that are very blurred.  These images are very sharp.

I saw an '88 manual that is about 5" thick.  I have one sortof like that, and a 2-piece one, and one that is about 4" thick.  What gives?

All this talk about manuals makes me envious.
Next to impossible to get over here.
Does anybody have an 88 SM they would be willing to sell.
I'm sure that alone the possesion of such a manual would reduce the questions I post here on the message board!

Well, if you can read electrical schematics, and get past the fact that there are many errors...

There are some helpful parts, but they omitted a lot of stuff.

Question:
Was there a big difference between the 87 & 88 Dukes?
It just so happens, I could get an almost pristine 87 SM here in Germany for under €40.
Is it worth it?

The only real difference is the oil filter and pump assembly. The 88 incorporates a "force balancer" - basically a set of counterweights on the oil pump shaft - and the oil filter is a bare cartridge that resides inside the pan. Is removed by unthreading the huge plug in the bottom of the pan.
All the electronics and sensors should be the same.

Of course, there are the 88 brake and suspension changes.

Makes changing the oil lots of fun -- NOT!
Actually there is one other difference  between the 87 and 88 duke -- where the heater hose connects to the intake manifold. On the 87, it's over the coil pack assembly, so if it leaks, water gets on the coil packs. It was moved to the other side for 88.
