Title: New Source, New T-shirts
Post by: Fierofool on April 04, 2018, 10:50:02 pm
Months ago, I began preparing for the 23rd Annual Run For The Hills.  I have prepared the route and have most of the itenerary planned.  Keeping in mind what has happened for the past 2 years, I also began seeking another source for our event Tshirts.

I have always liked the ability to produce a shirt with a full color photograph.  It's easier and cost effective to take a photograph than to pay someone to do custom artwork.  The equipment for printing our shirts is an inkjet printer.  A wide format printer using special ink applied to a special transfer sheet.  That printed transfer sheet is then placed on a tshirt that's positioned in a heat press.  The ink turns to a gas under heat and penetrates the fabric.

This process makes the image permanent and also gives it what's known as a 'soft hand'.  Meaning that with your eyes closed, you wouldn't know if you were touching the image or the bare white fabric.  The past 2 years I had to use an alternate printer who used a different process.  The feel was that of the old rubber iron-on transfers of the era when printed tshirts first became the big fad.  Stiff, sweaty, and after a few laundry cycles, the image began to crack and peel off the shirt.

When I first started doing the event shirts, my printer had a high end Hanes shirt that was 100% cotton inside with a polyester outer.  Through the years and successive printers, the Hanes shirts were no longer available and a 50/50 cotton/poly blend shirt was all that was available.  The polyester was necessary because the ink was formulated to bond to polyester.  Many didn't like the blend because it doesn't have the wicking ability of 100% cotton, and sometimes will irritate sensitive skin.

Today, I secured a source of 100% cotton shirts.  Printed by inkjet and it has that coveted 'soft hand'.  New technology has become available that makes these all-cotton shirts as durable as the cotton/poly blend.  Images are printed directly onto the shirt, which reduces production cost due to no special transfer sheet is required, and it eliminates that heat transfer step.  This allowed the printer to give our club special pricing that is equal to our cost at the other printer.

I will have a Georgia Fiero Club MEMBER shirt available at the April meeting, along with a Warwoman and Rattler shirt printed on the blend shirt.  I hope we can entice our members to purchase MEMBER shirts to promote and support our club.

Put me down for a couple of member shirts, sight unseen. I know it will be good.

The sample shirt I made has this on the back

And this in the left chest pocket area.

Nice.  Sign me up for one.

Wouldn't mind an actual Fiero on there somewhere, but none of the other clubs seem to have one either.  Maybe it's a copyright thing?

Maybe we can discuss this at the meeting and set a price.  I'd like to have it set up to purchase through club merchandise and place the month's orders collectively at the end of the month.  Then they can be distributed at the next meeting or mailed out.  I don't want to be running to the printer multiple times a month to get the shirts.

Perhaps have www.gafiero.org on there somewhere?

That peach being off-center triggers my OCD.

Will all the shirts be white?
Title: Re: New Source, New T-shirts
Post by: Fierofool on April 05, 2018, 09:47:31 pm
The peach had to be off-center because of the leaf.

The thing about this process is that they can print white, so printing on colored shirts is an option, but possibly at a higher cost because of the addition of the color white.  On colored shirts, the complete image has to be underlaid with white, thus you have 200% ink coverage.

Post by: GTRS Fiero on April 05, 2018, 10:30:23 pm
I'd have let the leaf go up against the side of the circle.

Yeah, I guess printing white on color would be difficult.
Title: Re: New Source, New T-shirts
Post by: Fierofool on April 05, 2018, 10:45:59 pm
It's not a problem.  When printed on a white background, the colors used are blue, red, yellow and black.  The density of the colors on white is what gives the different shades of a color and the black gives the highlights.  You have to create that white background by printing the complete image in white, then reprinting it in the 4 colors.  Ashe color shirts are usually the least problematic in other tshirt printing methods, but any color always had to have that 5th color white underneath to keep the color of the shirt from showing through the image.  If you have a sheet of yellow legal paper, print a picture on it and compare to one printed on white paper.  You'll see what I mean.

They had various color shirts on display and the colors printed on them were very strong.

My wife says she's interested in a shirt too.

Starts with a shirt.  Can a 3800SC be far behind?  ;)

I didn't know that "colors" would be available. I was interested before. But now I'm even more interested. (So is Tam.)
Is there a list of colors that are available? Does the printer have a website?

They can print on colors but I expect that darker colors will necessitate an increase in cost because the image will need an underlay of white.  That's a 5th color.

I suspect that Ashe might be the same price.  I only priced shirts in white 100% cotton.  I really don't want to get into a lot of variations in prices due to color selection, but I will ask about pricing for other colors.

This is what I would like to do.  Orders placed through the club's Club Merchandise section.  All orders for the month will be submitted to the printer on the last of the month.  If you miss that deadline, it will be another month before you get your shirt.

I will pick up the shirts and deliver them at the next meeting.  Example:  Order before May 31 and get your shirt at the meeting on June 9.

No COD's.  I am already out for shirts that were ordered for RFTH and were never paid for.

Steve, they do have a website, but tshirts and information about printing them isn't on their site.  It's www.ArtThouSigns.com

Can't beat her even on the Fiero Board...  It's OK.  I'm use to it.

Regarding shirts, if it matters, I vote for non-white shirts.  Maybe ash, peach, or light blue.
White T's look worn-out before colored shirts.

It's hard to keep white white.
Title: Re: New Source, New T-shirts
Post by: Fierofool on April 16, 2018, 06:04:57 pm
I just received a return call about pricing for color shirts.  There will be an additional $5 charge for color shirts, and as I suspected, it's because they will need to print an underlayment of white.  Because the printing process uses a dye, it absorbs into the material and the color blends with the color of the shirt.  Red would probably be brown without white underneath if it were printed on a black shirt.

They have two different grays or ashe shirts.  I will go over to see what a sample piece looks like on each color.  She said that possibly the lighter shade shirt wouldn't require white and they could still keep the original prices quoted.

Whatever they are, I'm fine with the $5 upcharge for "non-white". I'd probably do "ash". Not sure about Tammy.

One more... Are they available with long sleeves? (SWMBO was asking.)
Title: Re: New Source, New T-shirts
Post by: Fierofool on April 16, 2018, 09:58:43 pm
I haven't posted a price, yet.  Reason being is that there are so many variations available.  And the officers haven't decided upon what the markup will be or if we will just pass them on at cost.

I would guess that they would have long sleeve, short sleeve, with or without pockets, V-neck, crew neck, wife beaters, and a myriad of colors in each, depending upon who their supplier is.

Yes, all shirts will be 100% cotton.  As soon as Pat and Dave decide upon price and how many styles and colors, I hope we can get it up in the merchandise section.

I'm really glad to see the enthusiasm for these shirts.  And I suppose we can get any of the previous RFTH shirts printed on cotton.  All I have to do is submit  a digital image.  I think I have all of the final artwork I used saved.  The early shirts done by Florida and Alabama won't be available.

My opinion is that anyone can purchase any one of our shirts.  I will gladly provide archived artwork for previous runs if I have it.  Prices would be at the same price as originally priced.  That was usually $23-25 for standard adult sizes.  I'm all for anyone purchasing a member shirt, whether they pay dues, or not.  If they think enough of the club to want a club shirt, that's good.

I don't know if we can get everything worked out by the end of the month.  Waiting on Pat and Dave to let me know how many and what shirt variations they want to offer and how they want to price them.

Any colored shirt without the white underlay will have colors that aren't as vibrant, so they will probably require the $5 upcharge over white shirts.

We're starting out simple.  This printer is really making accommodations to us by giving us a quantity price but letting us order piece-meal.

We're starting out with just regular white short sleeve shirts.  Today when I ordered Paul's shirts, I asked about pricing for light gray shirts and she said all colors would be the same price unless they had to print a white underlay and that would be an additional $5.

There have been requests for so many variations that I don't think we would have room to offer all of them in the merchandise section.  As se progress and as things get settled down so that I can properly tend to the orders without mistakes I will talk with Dave and Pat about some limited variations.  Keep in mind that on colors requiring the white underlay will cost an additional 5.  Pockets and long sleeves word each have another up charge so its possible that a shirt might be upward of $30.

Reading through a prior thread, grey colors apparently show sweat.  Light blue seemed to be the preferred color.  There were discussions about vivid colors, standing out, club colors, etc.  Then the topics of fading and longevity came up.  The point was made that white does not fade.  Of course, white must be washed carefully, or it loses its white.

A little late for this, but the other thread also brought up leaving the member wording off, so that we could advertise, without a person actually being a member.

I suppose that depends upon how many shirts you want to sell, and how many members you want to have, wearing them.
I have a ton of club shirts that I never wear, because I don't like the way they look or feel, on me.
The simple truth of the matter is that if all I can get are short sleeve white shirts, I might buy one.  Or two, if the warwoman shirts are made available.
If I have some color or sleeve options, I might buy 3 or 4. (Tammy has also expressed an interest.) Even if I have to pay an upcharge for those options.

These are cotton, which I believe was chosen to deal with the feel issue.  I wish they were pre-shrunk, but it is what it is.

What colors of shirt do you wear?  I've seen you in blue and grey shirts, and they looked OK.  I'm no color expert.  I can see why you might want to avoid white and light grey.  Vivid colors probably look best.  I'm told I look good in yellow, which is a color...I prefer not to wear.  I hadn't thought about it until now, but I wear a lot of black, which is not a good color for me.

Long or short sleeve shouldn't matter, in terms of matching others, IMO.

I'm not sure what a second shirt in a different color would accomplish.  I wear the shirts I like, and suspect others do the same.  There are shirts I've never worn, and hope I never wear.  If the goal is to have everyone wearing the same color shirts, but the chosen color is not to the liking of all, we'll have the same problem we have now.

I've been to events where shirts were provided.  I stuck the whole packet in my car and forgot about it.  The shirts were apparenly meant to be worn that day, and aren't really suitable, now that that day has passed.  At the events, there were a handful of people wearing those shirts, but the planners had different shirts.  Everyone else was wearing different shirts.

I was just looking at one of the shirts and it says they are pre-shrunk.  You can probably still expect a little shrinkage after several wash and dry cycles.

I hope we can discuss and decide upon some colors when we have our meeting, Saturday.  I need to get some color samples from the printer.  Maybe a dark and light in each of blue, red, yellow, green, orange, and a black.  Some color shirts may require that the Fiero logo on the front be printed in white.

Unless I'm instructed to by the club, I hadn't planned to offer RFTH shirts or reprints on anything but white shirts.

Michael G, I will be needing to get with you on putting graphics on this year's RFTH image.  You'll be the first to see it until we release it.

At the meeting Saturday, I introduced a wide selection of colors and we decided to wait until we got to Northside Automotive to lay the sample book out so everyone could look at it at the same time.  I failed to do that and we didn't select any colors.

If it's OK with the officers, I will pick a light and dark shade of each Blue, Red, Green, Orange, and Yellow, plus the two shades of Gray that I've already introduced.  The darker shades of Red, Blue, and Green will likely require the $5 upcharge.

Pat and I will work together to get the order links up on the website.

Not to throw water on this or anything, but I have a suggestion.  I'm guessing that we aren't looking at large orders.  I would suggest that perhaps member/club shirts could be placed anytime, but orders would only be submitted once there were, say, 5 shirts.  The exception to this would be during open ordering (pick a 2-month period), when RFTH reprints could also be ordered.

This is just a suggestion, with the idea of getting a reasonable number of orders.

I'm also thinking of those extra shirts from last year that someone got stuck with.  Perhaps those could be sold at RFTH #23, maybe for a slight discount.

I don't order shirts that aren't paid for in advance.  So, we don't get stuck with shirts.  It's difficult to know how many and of what sizes would be ordered.  The only shirts I got stuck with last year was two shirts I took on a COD order.  The shirts had to be mailed out after the event, but I never got my money.

You don't have the shirts, AND didn't get paid?  That blows.

My opinion, but you shouldn't have been left holding the bag on that.

I'm the one who opted to do it, so it was my fault.  I've been doing it every year for the same person.  Just this year, I got stuck.

Has anyone ordered the grey shirts, yet?

No.  I've been too busy to get with Pat to work out how we're going to put things out for sale.

There is a light and dark gray.

Is there a standard shirt thickness/transparency?

Not that I know of.  Is there a problem with yours?  There are variations but I know of no standard.

Not necessarily a problem.  Just humorous.  In the pic, can you read the tag through the shirt?

I have some regular Fruit of The Loom Tshirts, bought at different times, that are of different density.

I've only worn the one shirt, thus far.  Certainly a very light and airy shirt.

If you add the option for a message line, it could help with allowing people to ask for things like different colors, or the person who wanted the shirt without the "Member" text.

When I get notification from PayPal, there's a section that says there were no special instructions from the buyer.  However, there's nothing on our vendor site that says options are available.

Truthfully, I'm glad that it's not there until after RFTH.  My printer is new to this and I often get questions from them before they print.  Mostly because of the two different shirts.

I guess your printer is rapidly gaining experience.

Well, something to think about in the future.  I'm sure your vendor has this as an option.

They have lots of experience printing shirts, just not dealing with our variety.

Next year, they will be more experienced with this variety.

I think if you want MikeMac to wear one of these shirts, the shirt will have to be black.

What color and size do you want?  Georgia Fiero Club Member or Run For The Hills 23?  They're available in white, light gray and dark gray.

Maria seemed to have a good source for shirts at good prices.  I don't recall the material with which yhe shirts were made.  Did anything ever come of that source?

I'm not positive but I think it was an online service.  I never checked it out.
