Title: Scouting Trip, RFTH 23
Post by: Fierofool on April 15, 2018, 06:05:09 pm
The Scouting Trip for RFTH 23 is scheduled for May 19.  Based upon who says they are going to participate, I will select a starting time and place by May 12, the day of our next club meeting.

Sorry, Scott.  I had posted a reply, but I guess I didn't click on Post.

All I can say at the moment is that I plan to base in Franklin, NC at the MicroTel Inn, where we've stayed before.  The Cherohala Skyway, Foothills Parkway and The Dragon are included.

Depending upon who plans to attend, we can select a meeting place down here to cruise up together, or we can just meet in the Fun Factory parking lot just down the street from the MicroTel Inn. It's important to try to depart at our normal 9AM start time in order to better determine lunch stops and dinner schedule.

I have been talking with Jim of the Georgia Triumph Association.  I had issued an invitation last year and this year for their club to join us.  He says they will not be joining us, but will be doing their own thing up at Fontana Village, instead.

Keep it in your schedule to join us on May 19 for our scouting run.  This is a more leisurely drive than the event in September if you so choose.

I would like for everyone to meet at 1036 Georgia Rd, Franklin, NC 28734, which is also known as US 441.  This is behind the AutoZone store.  If you aren't coming to the meeting this Saturday, I want to be able to leave by 9AM in order efficiently log times for lunch and evening dinner.

How about the station up past Gainesville on I-985?  Was it a RaceTrac or QT?

Yes, it is one of those...... I know the place, will meet you there

I checked it out and it's a RaceTrac.  It's just past Mile Marker 25 on I-985 at the traffic light at Howard Road.

Paul, is there any chance you and Toni will join us?  You could drive up Friday evening and stay at the MicroTel Inn in Franklin.  That will be the area for our starting point.

Ron, you need to come along for the shakedown run, too.  You might not be able to make the September event, depending upon your work demands.  You and Paul grab that guy with the yellow GT and bring him along, too.

If we meet at the RaceTrac at Mile Marker 25 on I-985/Ga. 365 in Gainesville, and be gassed and ready to pull out by 8AM, we can be in Franklin by 9.  That will allow us to start the trial run at about the same time as the actual run.

Budgetman72, let us know if you plan to join us.

Dave, I'll give you a call later in the evening to find out what your plans are.

I'll bring along about 6 route sheets.  Everyone bring their radios.

For those of you who are planning to go on the scouting trip:

The weather forecast is for 60% chance of rain all the way through Sunday.  How many of you would be willing to put this off until May 26 and would still be able to attend?

I will be out of town on the 26th. However, one forecast I saw is only a "chance" of thunderstorms on Saturday the 19th.
We should have a better forecast by Wednesday.

That's true because of arrangements that've all been committed to, like hotel and restaurants.  For me, I would be driving my 87.  If I were driving it, I would be more apt to go in rainy weather.  At the moment, I have some problems with it and am limited to driving my 86, which has some handling issues, even when it's on a dry road.  I don't dare drive it in heavy rain.

One of my concerns is that in the 2000-3000 ft elevations we will be driving, is that we will run into dense clouds or fog.  We have encountered that before when we made a meet and greet trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville.  We could hardly see 50 feet ahead and I almost ran over two bicyclists.  Just happened to see that little flashing red light on the rear of one of the bikes.

I'll let you know what I would like to do, tonight after the evening weather report.  If I decide not to go, I can provide route sheets for anyone that would still like to do it this weekend.  If it turns out that no one can do it on the first good Saturday, Tegan and I can do it alone.  After Thursday, she will be with me every day throughout the summer.

I don't think we can come near duplicating the run in heavy rain and possible heavy cloud cover up on the mountains.  I would really like to have a group going and I know this will cause some to not be able to go at a later date.  I'm sorry for that, but I need to think of an accurate documentation run and everyone's safety

Not faulting you.  I fully understand your concerns.  I was lamenting the date change, and the fact that this will diminish the participants.  In light of what happened with the last cruise...

Well, looks like I will go if I can borrow Pat's Formula.  There are a number of variables in the route that need to be worked out.  I've sent route sheets to Dave, Scott and Pat.  Anyone else plan to go?

Tomorrow morning, RaceTrac at Mile Marker 25 on I-985/Ga. 365 in Gainesville.  Ready to leave out by 8AM.
Next stop is behind the AutoZone, 1036 Georgia Rd, Franklin, NC 28734.  Georgia Road is US 442, US 23, which is also an extension of I-985/Ga. 365 for those not familiar with the area.

We should pull out of Franklin around 9AM.  FRS radios recommended.  Channel 7.

I had to let the dogs out and feed the cat, so I'm a little late.

Weather was variable from light sprinkles to some heavy rain, but the majority of the day was without rain and with a lot of sun.  Just as I was getting out of the car and gathering everything up to bring inside, there was a big bolt of lightning and loud clap of thunder close by.  A reminder from above of what we could have had.  Today was good.

Fierofool, since I'm guessing the Formula is a 2.8, how did it compare, in handling and power, to your '87?
Title: Re: Scouting Trip, RFTH 23
Post by: Fierofool on May 20, 2018, 09:10:07 am
Being someone else's car and also being unfamiliar with it, I didn't push as hard as I would have had I been in the 87.  I have an 86 with 2.8 but it's a 5-speed.  The Formula is an automatic.  There is a definite difference in a 3.4 and a 2.8, whether it be a manual or an automatic.

Sometimes, I had to manually shift it into 2nd going up some of the inclines.  It didn't want to do it on it's own.  I don't know if it was the elevations having effect on it, since we were often between 3000 and 5000 feet with extended climbs of over a mile.

Handling in curves was very good once I began to get comfortable with the car but again, I went into curves smoothly.  With the 87, I don't mind whipping it into a curve.  Without the ability to gear down through multiple gears, I sometimes ran in 2nd so I could use the engine braking and also to apply power as I entered turns.

Pat has slotted or cross-drilled rotors and maybe some upgraded pads on the car.  Initially, I thought there was a problem with the brakes due to the low frequency grinding or rumbling noise when the brakes were applied.  At a stop, we were talking about brakes (Scott had some brake fade) and I asked Pat if he had cross-drilled rotors, to which he said "Yes".

I'm glad it went well.
I was watching the news this AM, and they were talking about a woman who died in a mudslide, in NC, due to all the rain.

My 2.8 automatic Formula (before I did all the work) was unimpressive up in the mountains, climbing hills. I also wondered if it had to do with the altitude.
I ended up running its last unmodded RFTH mostly in 2nd gear.

Sarge's car looks amazing! First time I've ever seen it.

My 88 duke (although modified, it's still a duke), isn't exactly a powerhouse, but it doesn't seem to mind altitude, and performance was the same throughout the run.
I ran the dragon mostly in 2nd gear (5-speed Isuzu), with the engine screaming at up to 5000 RPM. Before my mods, it would start to fall off at 4500 RPM.

Title: Re: Scouting Trip, RFTH 23
Post by: GTRS Fiero on May 20, 2018, 10:28:46 am
5000 RPM!  I'm sure the stock duke would not like that!

The '88 duke has DIS, so it should adjust for the altitude, where the 2.8 with HEI will not.

Post by: Fierofool on May 20, 2018, 02:30:32 pm
Olejoedad told me that they stop when they get up at higher altitudes, disconnect the ECM connection near the battery for about 30 seconds, then plug it in again.  The ECM then recalibrates the sensor information for the higher altitudes and the performance returns.

A great drive with fantastic roads ( thank you Charlie ) no car trouble, we all made it home safely and lunch with friends. I can't wait to go back in September.

Side scoops are off of a Trans Am front fender
the car is best viewed from 50' away hopefully I'll have all the trim back on before the next meeting but it was great to drive it in the twists and turns a first for the car and me.

We were comparing MPG during the run, so afterwards, I decided to try to get pure highway MPG. We had topped off in Clayton (just  under the NC border), and I topped off again when I got off the highway near home. I got 33 MPG. Not bad for a 30 year old car. This was with the occasional stop light on US-23, AC on all the time, and doing 80 once US-23 changed to I-985 (mainly because nearly everyone else was doing 80).
Result: I think I'll keep this car.
Edit: for you folks outside the US, that's 14 kilometers per liter, and I was doing abut 129KPH on I-985.

I had looked at Hwy129photos and found the same thing.  I was going to grab one of their pics with all cars, but there wasn't one that showed enough of all of them.  Didn't have time to check out KillBoy.  That's a good picture with all the cars and also showing what so much of the roadway is like in this year's RFTH.  Of course, there are portions that are more twisty than in this picture.  Some areas where you could almost High-5 the cars behind you.

Yes, we are still going.  It's just the two of us.  Can you come across Ga. 20 and 369 into Gainesville and meet us on I-985 just north of Gainesville at the RaceTrac at the 25 mile marker/  We want to leave there by 8am.

Sitting at the RaceTrac waiting on Scott.  Dewey broke down shortly after leaving home.

I think I figured out why more people didn't show up for the scouting trip.  While it is open to everyone, it's only in one place.  People who want to be on the scouting ttip have to BE THERE.  Speaking for myself, of course.

Forgot.  Do you eat at the planned places while doing the scouting trip?

I have that image in my files for the 20th anniversary tshirt.

Yes, we do eat at our chosen lunch restaurant.  We don't usually eat at our chosen dinner restaurant due to having to return home at a decent hour.  Sometimes they are restaurants that we've stopped at before when going to or from some other event or one that someone's recommended.  I try to find an evening dinner restaurant that has a wide variety on their menu, plus a place that serves alcohol because some want adult beverages.  I don't remember where it was, but one of our base locations was a dry county and you couldn't buy alcohol.

What happened with Dewey?

He got about 10 or 15 miles and had smoke coming from the vents.  Battery died.  He said it didn't smell like anything burning, so I don't know what the problem was.  Haven't heard if he got it started and drove it home or had it towed.

AC compressor?  Usually right side only for that, though.  Ask him if AC was on.

I'm of the belief it was from the inside vents on the dash.

Interesting.  Freon leak?  Either way, turn off the HVAC.

Yes.  Bathroom break if needed.  It's not a scheduled stop.

I used to have an elevation plate from Vail, Colorado.  I think it was 8,000 feet or something.  I don't remember.  It fouled out 2 cylinders in the '77 Dodge, because we didn't advance the timing.  Th transmission (auto) and brakes got hot.  Still had snow in June.

Electronic advance was a nice improvement, but I don't know at what altitude issues start.

Sixteen years ago we vacationed in Denver.  We took a day trip up through the Rocky Mountains from west of Denver, looping back around to Estes Park.  Trail Ridge Road.  There was a point where we were above 12000 ft.  Mel was already experiencing breathing difficulties, even at our 1000 ft level.  Her doctor told her that if he'd known she was going to do that, he'd have locked her in a room to keep her from going.

Doctors are such a drag.  If they had their way, no one would ever have any fun.  Like RFTH, you're glad you went.
