Title: Cruise To The Coast
Post by: Fierofool on September 25, 2010, 09:21:58 am
Aerodonamic has mentioned several times that he's never been to the Georgia coast.  Is anyone interested in taking a trip down?  It's about 5-6 hours one way.  It's possible to do it in one day, or we could find a small hotel and stay overnight.

While we're down there we could go over to Claxton for some of that world famous Claxton Fruit Cake, right out of the oven at the bakery. ::)

Maybe?  There aren't many twisties down there.  How about Paula Dean's instead of fruit cake?

How about taking Paula Dean some Claxton fruit cake?

Let's see how many people are planning to take advantage of the Road Atlanta track day.  Then we can plan for a day or weekend cruise to the coast.

I looked at going to Tybee Island this last summer, but never made it (just couldn't see doing it without a/c !). Anywho, I found an inexpensive hotel on Tybee called the Royal Palm Motel (912) 786-4763.  Rates were about $70/ night during Summer months, might be less now that we are in Fall. Good seafood joints all over the area, so an overnight stay is not a bad idea considering the round trip drive time involved.  I will look at my budget to see if can squeeze out this trip, sounds like FUN ON A BUN !!

Linda and I looked into going to Paula Dean's once. You have to book about a half year in advance.

Some of our friends went while they were in Savannah, and they felt it was over priced and overrated.  Not nearly as good as they thought it should have been.

Tom, we haven't set a date, yet.  I'm waiting on Don to see what fits into his schedule.  The festival was a suggestion Tim made as a possible activity and date.  We've got to find out what Don's medical schedules are then we'll decide a date.  Keep some weekends open.

I think it's a wonderful idea!! I could help you guys around!! Paula Dean's is kind of expensive, but I just got the buffet. It includes appetizer breads, all you can eat south GA buffet, and a variety of desserts. It was good to me, but about $25 a person. Reservations can be made easily if you have a party of 10 or more. Otherwise its a little more difficult to get in. You dont have to stay in a hotel on Tybee unless you just want to, but $70 a night isnt a bad price for a room on or off the beach. I would love for you guys to come here, and I would be able to have a part in the GA Fiero Club.

AT the meeting today, it was decided that the cruise to the coast would take place on Halloween weekend, Oct. 30 and 31.  I guess it will be a rain or shine event.  This is the weekend before the Road Atlanta PDX, so I won't be able to make this one.  :'(  I'll still work to coordinate everything, though.

Based upon who is going, I'll set up a meeting place to caravan together.  If there's lots from the north and west of town, we could meet up maybe at Southlake Mall.  If most are from the north and east side of town, maybe Gwinnett Place Mall.  You need to sign up on this thread as a DEFINITE.  Maybes and Mights won't be calculated :D

From downtown it's easiest to go down 75 to Macon then take 16 to Savannah.  From the east side, it's better to pick up 441 between Athens and Madison and follow it down to Dublin and pick up 16.

Tom Ott will be the person for the hotel.

RE: hotel for this cruise....
go to www.tybeevisit.com and check out hotels for Saturday October 30th, then leave some feedback here on this thread and we can figure out what to do.  I suggested Tybee because I researched it this last summer, but other suggestions will be entertained.

I had done some checking and had information, but when I posted, it disappeared.  Here's a summary.

Rodeway Inn and Royal Palms are next to each other about midway of the island.  500 feet to the beach, then a ramp through the dunes and sea oats to the beach.  The beach is small in this area and less frequented.

Rodeway Inn $80 for 2 queen beds and continental breakfast.

Royal Palms Inn is next door.  $59 for 2 beds.  No breakfast, No Pets.

Howard Johnsons is near the south end and the pier.  It's closer to the beach.  Has more restaurants and shops very close.  The beach is wide in this area.  $80 for 2 queens and continental breakfast.

I vote for HoJo.  It had a 5 out of 5 star rating and favorable comments from past guests. Besides, any company that can start out selling ice cream (1 flavor) and end up at 88 flavors with a restaurant and hotel chain MUST be doing something right. Any other atendees have an opinion ?? ???

Alrighty then..........

If whoever wishes to come to DON'S BEACH BASH could post here by this coming Friday Oct 22, I can give a call to HOJO to verify room availability. I don't think we should have too much trouble getting rooms, it is "off season" for the Ga coast, and not too many "leafers" will be there to see Fall colors ;D .  So, let's get some enthusiasm going for this relaxing cuise to the coast.  I can already taste the seafood  :-* :o :) 8).

Though I'm not going, let me make a suggestion.  Going South on I-75, just outside the perimeter is Southlake Mall.  It's at Exit 233, which is the Morrow, Hwy 54 exit.  At the end of the ramp turn right and there's a McDonald's there.

Tom is further down I-75 in McDonough, so he could wait at Exit 218.  That's Hwy 20.  When you exit, turn left and go out to the QT station which is in front of Tom's apartment.  Everyone could get their tanks filled and be on the same page as far as gasoline stops.

Then if you stopped at US 441 in Dublin, which is about 100 miles from McDonough, there's a couple of stations there.  It's Exit 51.  Then it's another 100 miles to Savannah.  There's not a lot of gas stations between Dublin and Savannah.

Hi everyone,

As I understood it from the last monthly meeting (and I  may be wrong, it has happened before :o) I thought we were leaving on Saturday morning Oct 30, returning Sunday Oct 31.  Personally, I am all for leaving on Friday the 29th, returning on Saturday the 30th.
Is this the way everyone wants to do it ? ;D   So, I make the hotel room count at 4 ( Don, me & Jerry split room, Pat & Linda and Kevin).  Please continue to post your ideas, thoughts here so we can hash out details amongst us all.

Thanks !

Oops...forgot.  Don, my exit off I-75 Southbound  is McDonough #218 Hwy 20/81.  Get off exit and turn left, go approx. 1 block and meet up in QuikTrip on the left (corner of Hwy 20 and Willow Lane).  My cell phone # is (404) 660-9035.

Well,
the inevitable happened.....

I went back over my budget, and discovered that the unexpected car repair that popped up this month
shot my finances to heck, so, regrettably, I must back out of the trip to the coast this coming weekend.
It pains me more than you can imagine to have to do this.  I had to cancel my vacation plans to Tybee last summer for the same reason.  Since I need to move when my apartment lease is up at end of December, I have to focus on this and related expenses.  I admit it, I am not a wealthy person and life is too much of a struggle lately.  I hope that Don, Darrell and Jerry will still have a good time.

please forgive me,

Tom Ott

Well it looks like  the run to Savanna is a wash out to many casualtys to be worth the long drive and expense Ihumbly suggest we put it on hold for a future date  Maybe we can put something  together a little closer to home  before the weather turns bad  Yours truely Aerodon

Although I haven't commented, I've been checking in, here.
I already had plans for this weekend that I couldn't back out of.

I'll try to make a future one, if it's rescheduled.

Melanie said that she'd like to go along if we reschedule.  That means I'll have to drive the truck, but if we can make this a family outing that would be great.  I could set up a day cruise if you all would like.

PS:  Jerry, your phone is acting up again.  All calls go to voice mail.  Call me.

Well I got the engine back in my car and got it running tonight in hopes of driving to meet you guys. Isnt running "great", but it runs. I think you guys should still plan a trip here, gives me time to get my car cleaned up and painted before you see it. What goes on in the SE in the cooler months...? No snow? River St always has something going on. Lots of bars if you guys like to drink. Starting the beginning of Dec. the Civic Center has indoor ice skating. Just some ideas.

If you did it now, it'd have to be ”Don's Memorial Beach Bash”,
