Title: CLUB PICNIC
Post by: GrannyLinda on May 15, 2011, 10:16:46 pm
I would like to start a tradition of an annual club picnic. I am thinking of having it on August 20th.  My sister said we can have it at her place in Blairsville.  Is anybody interested?

Linda's sister's place is off the Richard Russel Scenic Highway near Blairsville. You could have a little fun and do a mini-RFTH getting there. There is a short distance of dirt road you have to drive on to get to her house, but since it is short, you can take it slow to keep the dust down. The drive down to her house (from the dirt road) is paved.
She has a covered pavilion at her house, that has a gas grille, refrigerator, stove, and picnic table.
The best of our group at grilling hamburgers can volunteer for the job.

A bit far out, but I'm sure we are in.

BTW: I'm a passionate "Grill-Sergeant"  ;D

As an alternative, if people think it's a bit too far away, Anne and I agreed that we could also have it at our house in Buford. We have two decks, one is covered, a pergula, which I will cover by then, outdoor fireplace, very large gas grill and a big back yard. Plenty of space in and outside the house.

As I said, as an alternative. Offer stands.

If you want to have it in August, how about on the date of the regular club meeting?  Those who participate usually make that day open in advance.  If that's acceptable to whoever hosts it.  We used to have a summer cookout, and it was usually on the same day as the meeting.

No objections here for Aug 13th.

I talked to my sister and she said the 13th will be fine with her.
Mary also said to bring your fishing poles.  She has a crystal clear "babbling brook"  that runs behind her house.
It is part of the Nottly River. It is 12-15 feet wide.
Mary also has a VERY FRIENDLY Pit Bull named Princess.
I am thinking hot dogs, hamburgers and buns. and maybe every one can bring a side dish like chips, potato salad, etc.

Well Mary said to just let her know when we want to come up and it will be fine with her.  We can discuss it further at the June meeting.

If this turns out to be at Mary's house, here's how to get there:

Get on I-985, and take exit 24 (GA-369) and turn West (Left if you're coming from the Atlanta direction).
Go .6 miles and turn right onto US-129/GA-11 North.
Go 2.1 miles and turn right to remain on US-129/GA-11 North.
Go 23.5 miles (passing through Cleveland) and turn right onto GA-75-ALT, towards Hellen. GA-75-ALT is a little passed the high school.
Go 5.9 miles and turn left onto GA-348 (Richard Russel Scenic Highway). There are curves here -- have fun!
Go 11.1 miles and turn left onto Hatchet Creek Rd.
Go .2 miles and turn a sharp left onto Hornaday Rd. This road is dirt -- drive slowly about 1/2 mile.
Hornaday Road becomes Hughes River Road about .2 miles in.
Look for Mary's Way on the left. Turn left when you see it. This is the drive to Mary's house. It's a bit steep down hill, but it's paved.

If you're using a GPS, set it for 5125 Hughes River Rd, Blairsville. This will get you close enough to figure out the rest. If your GPS says anything about turning on Helton Creek Rd., don't do it. That road goes through the creek twice, and your car might not float.
Mary's phone is 706 seven four five 7497.

We need to start getting an idea of who's coming to the picnic (2nd Saturday in August, in Blairsville). We are planning on meeting at the QT at exit 16 on I-985 and caravaning up. We'll have printed directions if you need them.
Maybe we can get a head count at the next meeting.
We also need volunteers to bring a side dish, chips, etc.

I plan to be there.  If Melanie is up to it, we will be in the truck.  If she's not, then it'll be the Fiero.  In any event, we will bring some of Mel's home made potato salad and anything else you might suggest.

What about drinks?  Should everyone bring whatever their group is drinking?

What time are we meeting at the QT?

I will be going up a few days early and taking hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, plates, plastic ware, napkins. a table and chairs.
There is a picnic table in the pavilion.
Please bring chairs and your own drinks.
Fishing Poles if you want to go fishing.
Pat has posted directions in case you did not get one at the July meeting.
Pat will have some to hand out when you meet at the gas station.
Bring your camera there are a few scenic overlooks on Richard Russel.
Here are the directions again.

Get on I-985, and take exit 24 (GA-369) and turn West (Left if you're coming from the Atlanta direction).

Linda's sister has taken a turn for the worst. So the picnic at her house is canceled.
If anyone would like to have it at their house, please let me know. If not, we will have a regular meeting at the Galaxy.
Keep Linda and her sister in your prayers.

OK, the original offer stands, if everybody wants to, we can have the CLUB PICNIC/BBQ at our house in Buford.

Being that it is a bit closer than Blairsville, we hope that plenty of members and non-members will show up.

Thank you anyways to Linda's sister for having good intentions, sorry she has fallen ill.

We should have enough space and enough parking for all who want to attend.
I'll need to get a somewhat accurate head-count though, to borrow chairs from the neighbors if needed. It's not that easy to bring drinks, snacks AND chairs in a Fiero! ;D

Let me know who can and cannot come so we can start planning

I will be going up a few days early and taking hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, plates, plastic ware, napkins. a table and chairs.

Linda/Pat - Does this still stand?

We have an empty double door fride/freezer in the garage and another small one in the basement, so we should have enough cool storage for food and drinks.
Let me know if you want to come over a day or two early to bring things. Same goes for anyone else that needs to bring anything in advance (to make room in the Fiero of course ;D)

OK - so far we have:

85GT

Who else?

Certainly wouldn't be the same withour our president, and I hope you can make it too Pat! ;D

Seriously though, hope the two of you can make it.

If, regretfully, the two of you should not be able to come, how should we handle the food issue? I know that you and Linda were going to handle/organize it somehow

Please post directions of how to get there.

Cool. Jerry said he'd be bringing the buns for the burgers and dogs; Mel will bring potato salad and we'll be making Cajun pasta salad.

We have seating now for about 22-26 people. We might need one or two more tables.
Charlie will bring a 10x10 canopy, so together with our covered deck and covered pergola, we should be good.

As to the subject of alcohol:
I have no problem if folks at the picnic drink, but I won't be serving any.
I'm sure you can relate; so if you want to have beer or any other alcoholic beverages, please bring your own. I have enough refrigeration to keep all of them cold, even kegs. I myself will most likely have a keg of Warsteiner Dark ;D

What nobody has addressed yet is desert; any volunteers for that?

When do all you who need to bring things in advance plan on coming over?

We need to coordinate this, as I don't usually get home until about 7:30 PM, so I need to make sure either Anne or Shanine are around.

Let me know.

That should be fine and enough time

Charlie wanted to bring a canopy, so I thought it might be better to bring that over maybe a day or so ahead of time.

Also, anyone bringing large amounts of drinks or such, feel free to bring them ahead of time, just let us know either via email or PM

OK, got some time now to post, last guests just left a few minutes ago (neighbors), dissapointed that all Fieros had left already.

Anne and I had a great time and hope to host it again next year. The few kinks we had in the planning/organization will be worked out by then ;D

BTW: We have waaaay tooooo many left-overs!!! Hate to see them go to waste.

By next month's meeting, we will bring whatever plasticware/bowls/ladles/spoons/whatevers if they have not yet been picked up.

Pat is coming tomorrow, so I won't worry bout their stuff.

Anyways - great picnic, glad you all could make it, see you all again next year (maybe a month later when it's not so hot, or in May???).

Our Internet connection has been down until a few mins ago, so sorry for the delay in saying THANKS to The Don & Duchess for hosting, and to everyone who attended and pitched in!

We enjoyed the food, but the the company was even better...

I especially enjoyed The Don's "Burns Twice" sausages!  :-O

Charlie, sorry you and Mel couldn't stay, but we totally understood.

Thanks, 88_4mula for drilling the air hole in my thermostat; what a great and practical solution!  The car ran cool all the way home.

Thanks again, everyone!

Tim, thanks for the sentiments.  Melanie was trying hard to make it, but the pain in her arm was so sever it was making her nauseous and her BP was down to 84 over 42 with a pulse in the 80's.  She wanted me to go without her but I couldn't leave her alone.

Hope the weather held out for you up there.  We got a little wet down here, though it's only a few miles away, straight line.  Hope the canopy worked out well, too.

Don, I'll stop by some time this week to take down the canopy and collect our dishes.  I'll call first.  Glad all enjoyed the day.

Anne and I might take the canopy down tomorrow and pack it up for you. Didn't have time today, replaced the door skin on the 84, swapped instrument cluster and speed sensor on the 85 and also entertained Pat & Linda for a while. That was fun too.

Just give us a shout and come on over, door is always open.
