Title: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: Fierofool on November 29, 2011, 03:11:27 pm
I'm going to leave this Sticky'ed for a little while so our occasional visitors may see it, too.

When Pat set up this message board, he broke it down into classifications that he thought would be of interest and serve our needs.  It was designed to be easily navigable so we could post or search with or for specific information.

I have noticed that many of the threads have become obscured and are no longer about their subject title, nor in their appropriate information section.  When you do a search to find out how to 'burp' your coolant system, you don't want to read about how I 'burped' my new granddaughter.  If you're posting about how to do a 'brake' job, you don't want someone posting to your thread about the price 'break' they got while shopping at Target.  I am as guilty as any one else.  As The Don noted in one thread, we started out with something Fiero related, and went off in 4 or 5 different directions.

Please, let's try to keep comments as closely related to the subject in the heading as we possibly can.  If you have something new you want to post, first pick a Section that best fits the subject, then start a thread.  A photo documentary of the assembly of your new 3-burner stainless steel barbecue grill doesn't belong in the Technical Tips section or someone's LS3 build thread though it might be very helpful to those of us who don't read directions.

General Discussion is for those things that don't really fit into the other Fiero or Club oriented sections.  It's the Off-Topic area to talk about anything.  Just please, try to keep it clean.

Thanks.
Charlie

I couldn't agree more with this Charlie, and truth be told, I'm sure everyone agrees that at one time or another, we've all been guilty of doing it.
I am glad however that it has been brought to everybody's attention and lets all try to adhere to it from now on.

Thanks

I absolutely agree... Congress needs to do something about this, gold-trading is a fad, the blue one is my favorite Angry Bird, and my toe fungus is getting better (see attached Before/After photos).

Maybe we can move Crash 86GT's comments into the "General Diskussion" because it sure has nothing to do with "New East Tennessee Fiero Club is open", anymore.

Today I bought one of those electronic cigarettes and everything to recharge it and keep it filled up so that I can stop smoking. And I also talked Ralph into doing the same thing, if I pay for it for him. It only cost about $65.00 a month but that's cheaper than $200.00 a month for regular cigarettes.

They brought the new alternator yesterday and it's 32 degrees outside now and windy but it's in the car, along with a new belt.
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: Robs Fieros on February 15, 2015, 07:56:47 am
The alternator didn't get finished yesterday, but at least I have the tools and parts now so I'm just waiting on warm weather. It's 10 degrees out there now, but as soon as it warms up today I'll finish it. I finally figured out that the lower bolt goes in from the front left hand side and I've been trying to put t in from the lower right hand side. Once I get that bolt in the right direction then the adjuster bolt should go right in then I can put the belt on and the power steering belt on and connect the wires up and tighten the belts up and boost it off and it should be done.

If you don't get it done today, plan to let it go for a while.  The forecast says a wintery mix coming in tomorrow and lasting for a couple of days with some pretty chilly temperatures.

My grand daughter has been studying animals in day care.  Yesterday when I picked her up, while riding home, she started to crow like a rooster, and a pretty darned good imitation, complete with the tone.  While looking for Ray Stevens' rendition with of In The Mood with The hen House Five plus Two, I also stumbled across this humorous song.  Judging by some of the titles in the side bar, I think Ray Stevens may not be a big fan of President Obama.  Maybe some will enjoy this while others might be offended that it makes fun of our President.  But that's the Freedom of America.

I just tried to move my 2 riding mowers around, and on the way down the ramps the back tire on the Craftsman mower went flat. So I picked it up and set it back in the building. But I'm still planning on selling some parts when they get me moved into my new building.

You need one of those little inflator pumps that plugs into your cigarette lighter.  If your truck is like mine, it has an accessory power outlet in the right rear corner of the bed.

Yes it does. They have me moved into a temporary shop now, with my parts in a trailer from a tractor trailer. I just drove to Etowah and bought Willie some more dog food and got me some more smokes. Now to go climb a ladder and fix our cover. And tape up the tarp over our other building.

Should be good weather for it.  Here, it's 60 degrees.  3 acres is small, so should only take an hour to do.  Steak sounds great.

Not much use in only 3 acres.

Robbie, I know you're talented, but you remind me of a certain line in Sweet Home Alabama.  You can only ride one mower at a time.

It feels so strange, seeing no posts.  I'd checked several times, and saw others online, off and on.

I looked back through the posts.  There hasn't been a day without a single post since 6/16/17, or thereabouts.  I looked through 2016, and there was at least 1 day each month with 0 posts.

At an event tonight, 2 police officers were discussing some yeggs and how to handle them.  Without missing a beat, my son suggested that the yeggs be cracked, broken open, separated, and fried.  Thankfully, he stopped there.  Anyway, the police officers got really quiet, then asked if my son knew what a yegg was.  My son said, "Eggs with yolks".  One of the officers laughed, and told my son that maybe he was right.

It was our turn to get a bit of snow.

Since my ATVs are all carbureted, I usually start them at least every other week to clean out the carbureter.  This was the second week, so I started them, and took one for a ride in the snow.  In fact, we used it to deliver cards and things around the neighborhood.  The kids wore helmets and we stayed on the sidewalk where possible.  The kids did the actual deliveries.

I've been enjoying some holiday favorites.  Hot chocolate with marshmallows, Holiday Nog, frozen Snickers, and hot apple cider.

Sometimes, good ideas mix together to become great.  Whomever thought up meatloaf was a genius.  Cookie dough is great, too.  Ice cream floats (not while it's 10 degrees outside, perhaps) can be good.  I tried mixing half a cup of Nesquik with a glass of holiday nog.  Not one of my better ideas.

I grew up with Christmas breads, like stolen, pula, pumpkin, and cinnamon, and Christmas cookies such as springerle, pfeffernusse, butterballs, and some others.

Today, we had the bright idea to dispose of a vehicle by running if off a bluff.  No scam or anything.  More like getting even with the vehicle.  It had apparently been in a flood at some point.  It had various electrical issues no one can seem to fix.  We picked an abandoned bluff.  No danger of fire.  The river was at the bottom of the bluff.  We had the flatbed truck ready.  The  truck came flying over the rim of the cliff.  The windshield did not break, but the side windows did.  We watched as the truck ran out onto the river, where it proceeded down the ice.  It vanished down the river, bouncing off various things.  It's hard to go quickly along the bank.  We caught up with it, eventually, but it was way out in the river.  The temps were above 50 for 2 days, although it's 14 today, so the ice is an iffy thing.  No snowmobiles, but we caught it with an ATV.  We riddled the truck with enough holes that it stopped running.  We ran a bunch of cable and winched the truck back to the shore, but can't get it out of the gorge.  If the temp holds, we'll tow the truck to a low area.

For anyone else that tries this, wait until it's warm outside, and make sure the engine stops running as soon is the vehicle goes over the edge.  Chasing a vehicle that is running 40MPH and steering itself is...idiotic.  The steering wheel was locked straight when it left the bluff, but after it landed, not so much.  If we'd have been lucky, it'd have flipped over, but we weren't that lucky.  We didn't want it to cause anyone harm.  Instead, it ran through driftwood, crashed through various gravel and dirt bars, hit the bank, made U turns, and generally would have been funny to watch someone else chase.

Unlikely.  We put a sheet of that stuff that holds the glass in place on each window.  All we'd have to do is show that no glass was missing.  We didn't want to have to clean that up.  The headlights, side mirrors, and tail lights were sold, along with a few other items, like the nice tires and wheels.

I'm afraid it was pure laziness.  I don't like to create work for myself.

The truck fell through the ice.  It didn't go anywhere, but it just got more difficult to retrieve.  If it thaws more, we'll raft it out.

For anyone who tries this in the future, just let people pay $1 to take 5 hits with a sledgehammer.

My kids and I have been playing Beach Buggy, which is a racing game, where you can shoot and otherwise sabotage the other racers.  It's a cartoon, so nothing really bad happens, except that the victim driver is ejected from their vehicle in a most undignified fashion.

The kids also tried out some combat flight simulator, where there were fairly complete controls, with the scrool wheel selecting weapons, and the red button on the stick firing them.

Today, I hauled a few crates of stuff with a 10-wheeler.  Not my favorite vehicle to drive, but it is what it is.  Anyway, I took my son with me.  This one is a 16-speed on the floor, with a 2-speed rear end, controlled by a button on the shift lever.  I'm not good with the 2-speed rear end, but get through the first 8 gears, just fine.  We did a lot of city driving, and my son was having fun, bouncing along.  The truck was carrying about 14 tons, so it's going nowhere fast, but there was someone in front of me holding me up, and not maintaining a constant speed.  I really needed to get where I was going, so I kept watching the clock on the dash.  Eventually, my son asked why I didn't just push the "missile" button to get them out of the way.  It was funny, when I thought he was joking.  Then, I realized what he meant.

The odor has been eliminated, the ghosts, ghouls and goblins are gone, the boogey man was run off, and Jimmy Hoffa is not here.  We eradicated all bugs, critters, varmints, and vermin.  The rodents were all sent to wheelhouses.  We rounded up the 3 pigs in a poke, the squeaky wheel, and fingernails on the chalkboard.  The rubber duckie was extradited.

The search continues for 2 peas in a pod, but it should be safe to post now.

It's probably far enough away from Georgia Tech that it's of no concern.  And, it's not something that's used for profit.  Making money from it is where the problem usually surfaces.

A similar incident here at home, where our local Winder-Barrow High School sports teams are named the Bulldoggs.  They originally had just 1 g until the University of Georgia threatened a lawsuit.  UGA is just about 15 miles away.

A tshirt printing company I used to manage got approval from UGA to reproduce their logo but we had to pay a royalty to them for every shirt sold.  We also developed our own version by changing the tint of the red slightly and modifying the teeth.  Only someone with an official logo or a real UGA Bulldog fan would know the difference.  We paid no royalties on our design.

Not much for backups, huh?  Several of my clients were attacked, but there were only a handful of files affected, in each case, due to planning for this sort of thing.  Everything shuts down, preventing any spread of the ransomware.  We never identified the source, possibly because none of the clients would pay for that effort.  We didn't pay, but were only "down" for about 1 hout.

My theory was to follow the money; whomever collects, follow them, but track, until the responsible people are found.
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING

The speculation was that it was someone "outside our borders".
The ransom demand was $51,000 in bitcoins. Everyone was puzzled as to why they chose that amount. I suppose they figured that it was "small change" enough that it would be worth it to just pay up. They have probably spent significantly more than that, rebuilding the system(s).

I should mention that the Atlanta City Government seems to not be the most tightly run ship. Nothing about this surprises me, at all.

It is very hard when dealing with government entities.  They choose incompetent people to do things, because they are trying to curry favor.  Many of the employees do the least they can, basically just collect a check.  No matter how often I've cleaned up, re-trained, provided documentation, etc, they usually will not change.  They refuse to prevent issues, but also to cure them.  Usually, after a mess like this, they'll pay a fortune to get back up and running, but refuse to rake steps to prevent it from happening again.

If you figure 3 weeks, times 60 hours per week, times $500/hr, that's $90,000.  Of course, they probably have more than 1 contractor helping, so multiply by however many people.  I chose 60 hours, because with government entities that's usually the workload, but even at 40 hours, it's $60,000 per contractor for 3 weeks' labor.  That doesn't count the money spent on lost productivity for employees to do nothing while their systems are down.

To be sure, there are some who try, bug not the majority.

I am in the planning stages of replacing my AC compressor and other AC system parts.  So, I've been online ordering parts.  Compressor, receiver dryer and orifice tube.

I ordered a new HR-6 compressor on eBay, putting in the vehicle as an 87 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8 V6 engine.  The website confirmed that it was an exact replacement.  Well, it wasn't.  It had a pulley for a serpentine belt instead of a V-belt.  Calls to them go to a voice mailbox and they haven't returned my call in 3 days.  Neither have they responded to my email in 2 days.  jamcoautoparts on eBay.

Came in on time in a box within a box.  The outer box measures 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 x 9.  I ordered the orifice tube and receiver dryer from AutoZone.  Both items on the same order.  Both came in at the same time but in separate boxes.  Receiver dryer in a box within a box.  Orifice tube in a box within a box.  Both were shipped from the same location.

The real kicker and the point of this (and a bit of a rant) is how you get hit for shipping charges when it's less than the minimum for free shipping, and packaging.  All 3 items came in in the identical size boxes.  That's right, the orifice tube came in a 12 x 9 x 9 outer box, with a tiny little 1 x 1 x 6 inch box containing the tube.  Had they combined my dryer and orifice tube as one order the way I placed it, and sent it in one box, my shipping charges would have been ZERO.

They use large boxes, because they have fixed-rate shipping, and large boxes are easier for carriers to keep track of.  Even if you order 3 products from the same place, and they come from the same warehouse, to the same address, and the same person packages them, it's easier for them to use multiple boxes and charge you shipping times 3 than it is to pack them together.

I ordered kids' watches, and they were shipped in separate boxes.

I drove to work in moderately heavy rain, this morning.  While driving down the road, I happened to see a dark green Midget GT convertible, with the top down.  An older man was driving, and we were going 50+ MPH.  He was wearing goggles.  From time to time, he'd wipe his hair.  At first I wasn't sure, but then I observed that he would occasionally pick up a mug and apparently drink from it.  I guess it's convertible weather.

I've been working on my chair.  Not perfect, but it turns, rocks, and reclines.  It's padded, but not overstuffed.
Perhaps, I should make the chair wider, overstuff it, and change the cloth for soft leather.

Anyway, not the most comfortable chair, but a great improvement from my papasan chair.  My Ricarto chair was nice, but is starting to fall apart after 20+ years, and the dog chewed on that chair.  Perhaps I broke the supports.  Anyway, if you fall over backward in that vhair, getting up is most undignified.

I have a corner sectional chair that is leather-covered, has wide arms with pockets, reclines, is overstuffed, has an electronic massager built in, and even has drink and remote holders.  After 30 years, it's starting to show wear, also.

A previous effort for a chair was basically mounted on a ball with an electronic gyroscope.  It went through batteries quickly, and would unceremoniously dump me on the floor.

What is your favorite chair?

My sofa and chair are leather.  The sofa has overstuffed armrests.  The previous recliner that Melanie used was part of the living room set.  The recliner broke and I replaced it with one of similar the same material, color and similar style except that the armrests aren't as stuffed.  The end sections on the sofa recline, and either end was my favorite over the recliner.  Where Melanie sat was the coldest spot in the living room, so I have rearranged the furniture and I can't fully recline on the sofa, so I'm using the recliner chair, now located on the other side of the room.

There is a stop sign on a cross street near me.  People frequently run this stop sign.  The speed limit is 25MPH.

Tonight, I was undressed and just getting into bed, when I heard the screech of brakes and a crash, followed by smaller crashes, then screams.  I got dressed again, and ran the 2 blocks to the accident.  There were 2 vehicles at that intersection, one was barely recognizeable as a Ford Focus sedan, and the other was a toyota.  The sedan was in the middle of a neighbor's yard, and had bounced off a tree just past the stop sign and then gone through a hedge.  A lady and some kids were sortof sitting nearby, but not really aware of me.
The toyota had all airbags deployed, was on fire, and the occupants couldn't seem to open the doors.  The toyota had spun around and rebounded off a brick garden, then skidded down the T street.  The occupants of both vehicles were black, which I only mention because of what came later.

The black neighbor whose yard had the Focus in it and I got the front doors of the focus open, whereupon the occupants basically ran off down the street, leaving crying children in the back seat. We got the kids out, and the neighbor and his wife tried to calm the kids, who had not been wearing seatbelts.

I called the police, only to get tackled by the guy who had run from the car.  He ran when the police arrived.

The skid marks of the toyota were 16 paces long.  However far you figure that was, the toyota was going more than 25MPH, and clearly had not stopped.  The Focus, also, had clearly not stopped.  The woman who had been driving the Focus finally snapped out of it, when the neighbor asked her about an ambulance, at which point she went into a panic and started yelling and beating her fists on the neighbor's chest.  By this time, we could hear sirens, and the kids were sortof wailing.

At this point, the toyota was fully ablaze, and another neighbor brought out his garden hose.

Well, he tried something with the COP.  I did not see it start, but the COP backhanded the guy, and told the guy not to lay a hand on him again.  I was trying to be in the background.  Do not worry.  He will remember our tussle for a good long while.  I do not want him to have my name or address.

I would like to think I'm fair.  He has his own issues.  I do not believe he meant me harm, but really did not care.  He probably will not go to jail, and likely will not pay a fine, regardless of what I did or did not do.  I'm sure he will vanish, until the next incident.

Yesterday, I stopped for a red light.  A few seconds later, the guy behind me did not stop.  Aside from damage to his vehicle, he broke the wrist that was holding his cell phone.  He was telling the COP that it wasn't his fault, he looked to just as he hit [me], there was nothing he could do.

The guy claimed he was only crawling along, but it is a GPS-monitored company van.  I called the company owner (whom I happen to know), and got the GPS records, which showed him speeding.  Hmmm.  My vehicle cam shows me stopped, and you can see the top of the guy's head, then the hood fly up.

It's actually a second layer.  The holes don't go all the way through.  At least on none of the pairs I've had.  Might be a good thing.  Instead of Big Foot, when I was a kid my sister called me Stinky Toe.

I didn't want to clutter the other thread.

I am no expert on smelly feet, but here are some tips I've learned.

1. Don't just lackadaisically wash your feet: SCRUB them daily with soap, especially between your toes and under your toenails.
2. After washing, dry your feet COMPLETELY.  NEVER let your feet air dry.  Concentrate on drying your toes and the bottoms of your feet.
3. Do not wear your shoes for 16 hours.  Change your shoes after about 8 hours.
4. Some feet do not like certain shoe linings.  Plastic shoe liners are generally bad.  Do not go without socks in your shoes.
5. Just like clammy hands, clammy feet are bad.  Keep your feet dry.
6. Use fresh, clean, dry socks every day.  Thicker socks may work better for some people, and thinner socks for other people.  Dress socks seem to contribute to the clammy/smelly feet issue.
7. The sock material matters.  Try changing materials.  You want an absorptive material.
8. You can put a bit of baby powder in the bottom of your shoes to help with moisture.  If your socks are not white, put the powder under the bottom shoe liner.

After about 1 month, your feet should lose their smell.  If you replace your shoes, the time will be shorter.  Sometimes, shoes are too far gone to save.  If a shoe does not air out on its own after 3 days, time to go.

I stopped buying shoes with any manmade materials other than maybe the outer sole and heel.  Manmade material shoes are hot because they don't breathe or absorb.  Manmade material shoes cost me close to $100/pair and only last 4-5 months.  The shoes in that picture are 100% leather and cost just over $150.

My socks are at least 50% cotton.  I use a back scrubber brush, rubbed on my soap bar, to scrub my feet  especially the toes and sole.

I haven't had a foot odor problem since retiring in 1999.

This was a google search for fiero club georgia.

Some people have multiple graduate degrees, or multiple certifications.  Just wondering, but do you include everything that led to your highest achievement, or just your highest achievement?

For example, if you have a BS degree, do you list your assiciate degree, your high school, and your grade school, or, since you have the BS degree, can you omit the things that brought you to that point?

In the case of certifications, I see people listing MCP, A+, Security+, Network+, MCSA, and MCSE.

MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) means you have passed a Microsoft test.  ANY Microsoft test.  I NEVER list this.

A+ means you have 6 months' worth of computer tech experience.  So does most of the developed world.  Congrats.  You know the parts of a computer.  A rather mundane COMPTIA test.

Security+ is more worthwhile, in theory, but is supposed to demonstrate your ability to secure networks.  Only it's always behind.  So, you know how to secure networks, but only if you go back in time a few years.  Another COMPTIA test.

Network+ is a COMPTIA test about subnetting, supernetting, and CIDR notation.  This one is actually useful, but any network professional would be proficient in this area.

MCSA is a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.  To gain this certification, one must pass all the previous tests, as well as some other tests, including a Microsoft Server test.  Basically, this is every network professional.  This may include some Geek Squad people, and the hole-in-the-wall IT places.

MCSE is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.  To gain this certification, one must pass all the previous tests, as well as some other tests, including additional Microsoft tests, such as a database or Exchange test.  This is probably half of the network professionals.  The people with this level of certification include the majority of IT contractors, lots of help desk agents, and the business ISP people who handle the on-premise equipment.

CCNA, CCNP, CCIE are Cisco tests about routing and switching.  These are usually worth listing, as are CISM and CRISC, which are security certifications.  An MCSA may have some of these certifications.  Usually, these people are the full-time IT staff, some IT contractors, and the tier 3 backbone engineers.

When you list your age, you don't list milestones: 13, 16, 18, 21, 25, 35, etc, right?

I don't want to detract from the effort of taking these tests--especially now that many of these are no longer lifetime.

I have some certifications coming due in March.  To refresh us, they sent a guy who listed EVERY SINGLE test he has taken.  I really don't care if he is certified in Excel or Access, or underwater basket weaving.

How do you list your degrees or certifications?

I don't mind listing most of my titles and certs, especially living in Germany, where titles are valued very highly.
But I see what you are saying, some are either redundant, or just plain out of date. I don't list my MSc..........but I certainly list my DCS!
But I must say, I've noticed, after being in a hire and fire position myself, somebody listing a plethora of certs does demanstrate that the candidate is diversified, and that makes him or her attractive to potential employers.

Don Kienlen, DCS
CCNP/CCDP, MCT, MCSE, Security+, ISO 9001-2000 Project Management Certified, ITIL Foundation & Service Design Professional

:-).........had to brag a bit

I usually let my references speak for me.  People want something fixed.  I can fix it.  They did not get my number by accident.  There is more work than I can do, so they can go somewhere else, if they don't like my list of certs.

We have teacher "engineers" with no real-world experience.  Often, I think the people who take the classes are dumber for having taken the classes.  I have to break them of so many bad habits.  Yes, they have some basic understanding, but much that they were taught in class must be re-taught correctly.

For example, a guy who had 2 4-year IT degrees, and a plethora of certs, and a tech school degree, after being with us for 4 years, is still basically a desktop tech, because he is still trying to do what he was taught in school.  Schools teach on virtualization, leaving their students with no hands-on experience.

I would far rather see what the prospective employee has actually done, than a list of certs.

Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: Fierofool on December 13, 2018, 09:37:05 am
Not usually, but there have been a few light tremors over the years.

From Google Search:
Has there ever been an earthquake in Georgia?
Earthquakes aren't unheard of in the region. A 4.3-magnitude earthquake happened in Georgia in August 1974 several miles west of Friday's quake. Three others of similar magnitude have been felt in South Carolina in the past 40 years, according to the USGS.Feb 15, 2014

The North Georgia area of Trion felt a quake in November; a magnitude 2.5 earthquake struck an area about 100 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta in April 2017; and a 2.5 magnitude quake hit in Augusta later in the month. An earthquake of 3.2 magnitude hit Augusta last June.Apr 29, 2018

The biggest source of earthquakes in the eastern half of the US is the  New Madrid Seismic Zone, near New Madrid, Missouri. Some "experts" think the recent quake indicates that a big one will happen in that area soon.

If you killed and ate the meat of one with rabies, could you contract rabies?  I know there's a possibility of being infected as you process the hog, especially if you have any breaks in the skin, but can you get it from eating the meat?

Rabies is usually a summer disease so they may not have it at this time of the year.

For the past couple of days, the death of a young man, maybe 19, has been one of the feature stories on the Atlanta news.  The young man was sitting in his vehicle and someone shot him 3 times.  This was in a mobile home park in Stockbridge, Ga.

Because Ray, one of my brothers, had lived in a mobile home park in Stockbridge I was curious to know if it was where he had lived, so I looked up the park on Google Maps, and sure enough, the street shown in the news reports is in Deer Creek Manufactured Home Subdivision.

It's actually a pretty large park.  It has a ball/soccer field, playground, tennis courts, and swimming pool.  Those are the things that can be identified from aerial imagery.  There are other amenities, like laundry and a little store.

Taking a street tour through the park with Google, the homes appear to be pretty well maintained.  Google only takes a short drive in and back out of the park, since they generally don't go into subdivisions or onto dead end streets, so the whole park wasn't covered.

Going back to the aerial view, one can see that the street tour was only through the area at the front where the double wide homes are located.  The single wides were located in the rear.  This is where the murder of the young man occurred.

By clicking on Deer Creek Mobile Home Park on the Google Map, you bring up a display to the left of the screen with a little information about the park, and an album of pictures.

I began the slide show consisting of about 50 photos, and I'm amazed at what the management feels is a desirable representation of their mobile home community.  I've heard some of the stories told by Ray about the management, but....well, just look through the pictures for yourself.   Pictures of what appear to be marijuana, selfies of people posing with guns, roaches in a mobile home, green water in the pool, and on and on and on.  Seems to be what's becoming acceptable as the norm in so many parts of the country.

It's snowing here, so time to work.  We don't have a dishwasher, so I thought I'd build one from some parts.  I started with a broken dishwasher.  The motor had died, so I decided to use an old WARP9 motor.  There really isn't much space where the original motor was, so the WARP9 had to be mounted behind unit.

After working on the controls for a bit, I realized that the WARP9 is DC, and I needed an AC motor.  I found one that we had used to run a bunch of lathes and screw machines.  It was a pain to move.  After removing some dust, I tried a fitting.  I couldn't figure out how to mount this thing behind the dishwasher, because it's almost the same size as the unit.  So, I removed a stack of drawers to mount it beside the unit.   Hmmm.  Heavy-duty wiring.  After some wiring, I got the motor running with a 200-amp breaker.  Did I mention that the motor is VERY heavy?  I mounted the motor to the floor.  I hadn't realized how loud the motor is.

The difference in wiring sizes sortof scared me, so I upgraded the gauge on the wiring to 2, which should be adequate.  I had to modify the control panel on the washer with some less flimsy switches.  The new panel is made out of hickory, rather than plastic.  For safety, I added some fuses.

Due to the 2" shaft size on the motor, I was forced to use an additional pulley.  Apparently the mechanics were old and brittle.  I borrowed some pieces from an old machine in the shop, but it seems fitment is a problem.  With some rework, the pieces fit.  It seemed that the unit was about ready, so I hooked up the water for a test.  Maybe the pump was brittle, so I modified a pump that claims to move about 7 gallons per minute, which should be adequate.  The washer looks to be maybe 20 gallons or so in size.

The seals must've been shot.  I had to replace them, then the rinky-dink latch and the hinges.  I'm very proud of the new hinges, which came from the door of an old coal stove.  After some work with the angle grinder, my welds looked passable.

Now I have a problem: when this thing runs, the entire house hums.  Think like shaking your teeth out.  Maybe I could use a rubber pad under the motor.

In the meantime, I decided that the drain was too small.  With some work, the drain has been modified to a 2-inch size, which should accomodate any remaining food stuffs.  Maybe a disposal under the floor?

A friend is helping me, and he thinks I should use the 2-cylinder ATV motor we have.  That would look cool, with the muscle-car intake above the washer, but not in the house.   Besides, that motor is about 1,000 cc's, and maybe louder.  Hopefully, I can figure out how to adapt the WARP9 motor, which should be more quiet.  Who knew electric motors were so shaky?

A socket I had purchased sat in my truck.  I went to use the socket, and it broke.  Since the socket was under warranty, I took it back to O'Rielly's.  They refused to honor the warranty, because the socket had been left out in the cold.  No worries, because I disputed the charge on my card.  The socket was $10, but it was part of a $329 purchase.  Today, my bank notified me that the entire amount had been permanently credited to my account.  So, rather than honor the warranty, which would have cost them a moment of time, they lost $329.  Good move.  Maybe I should test the other items that I leave in my truck.

Have you ever gone to get some peanut butter, and there was only a 16oz sample size?  Worse, it was crunchy.  It only made 1 sandwich, but required the suppliment of a sliced banana and honey on cinnamon toast.  I used Texas Toast, because it isn't so thin as to be see-through.

Peanut butter should come in 5-gallon buckets.  That should last a family for a week.

;D. Crunchy is good.  I prefer it on cinnamon raisin bread.

When I eat peanuts, I eat peanuts.  When I eat butter, I eat butter.  Any type of butter should be smooth.  Peanut butter, apple butter, peach butter, etc.  I do not like lumps in my butter.

I haven't had cinnamon raisin bread for a long time.

Crunchy would seem to be better, because it holds together better, but I just don't like it.  Regardless, it was just enough to be a teaser.  Heck, peoole like me were a boon for GW Carver.

The greater Metropolitan Atlanta didn't have any problems during the tornadoes yesterday other than some areas that got more than 2 inches of rain.  There may have been some trees down here and there but not a direct connection to the tornadic activity.  A 65 mile swath was cut from somewhere in the Auburn, Al. area, crossing into Georgia between Columbus and LaGrange, heading toward Macon.  Most of the severe damage ended in and around the town of Talbotton, Ga.  No official word from top weather authorities but most local meteorologists are guessing at an F3 or F4 tornado.  Peachtree City National Weather Service Doppler recorded wind speeds of 138 mph after the storm passed into Georgia.

Post by: Fierofool on March 04, 2019, 05:10:23 pm
The National Weather Service is now saying that it was an EF4 Tornado with 170 MPH winds.  Some aerial video shows that in some areas the ground was sucked up.  Parts of the path is now determined to have been a mile wide and the storm traveled more than 80 miles on the ground.

At the time it was happening, Live Doppler Radar showed debris from the tornado being thrown several miles ahead of the actual funnel cloud.

Last I heard, 24 people were killed. I think they were all in Alabama - a bit south of Opelika -  but I could be mistaken.
Others were still reported missing, so the tally may go higher. :(

From an "inside" perspective, we (Ga Power) lost two radio towers in Fortson GA. Flat on the ground. As well as a bunch of high voltage (230KV) lines and towers. (Those towers also supported fiber optic cable, so there are communications outages related to those.)

Yes, I read that tally for AL.

Well, those will be expensive to replace, but not as expensive as a wind farm would have been.

Sad.  I went to the classic car people where I've always gone.  I was in time to see them loading up most of their stock.  It looks as if the business is closing up shop.  The place is about an hour away from me.  The car I wanted to drive was one of the first loaded up, so it was gone.  The cars are being shipped to Arizona.  I guess I could try Gateway Classic cars, now that I think of it.

On the positive side, I went to another place, where they had a GTO Judge, a Willys Coupe street rod, a Ford GT with a Westlake engine, a '65 Backdraft Cobra (this thing HAULS), several DeTomaso's, a Corsair Xanigator, and some other interesting car--but not any for which I was looking.

Does anyone have a gasoline-powered pole saw and pressure washer that I could rent from you?  Electric is out of the question because of the distance I have to run a drop line.  I have several 100-foot lines, but the amp draw would be too high at those distances.

I'll need each for several days this week.  I checked with a local tool rental and to rent them for two days each would be equal to the purchase prices.

I would need to pick up Sunday afternoon through Tuesday evening.

Another option for this -- I have a gasoline powered generator, 4000 Watts peak. I don't know if that would run electric versions of your tools, though.

My brother from Homer is coming down to do some work in the back yard.  He said he can bring a gas powered washer.  I'll be working in the front yard with the washer while he's at the back clearing and burning brush and limbs.  If it turns out he can't get the washer, I'll take you up on the generator.  Tony and Melissa have an electric washer I can get.

Long ago, I made a manual pole saw, using a big hacksaw blade welded to the metal thing for a shovel, and put that on the pole for getting apples.  The saw was at maybe a 30% angle from straight.  I welded a nose on the end, to keep it on the limb, and tapered the end of the blade to the nose.  It's a lot of work to cut limbs this way, but effective.  I, um, Tom Sawyered the work.

Someone slipped veggie dogs into the regular hotdogs.  I unsuspectingly bit into what I thought was a hot dog.  This was all arranged by the vegetarian at work, who happened to be sitting at the same table.  She said the look on my face was priceless.  I didn't spit it out, but it took hours to get that taste out of my mouth.

This particular dog had all the trimmings.  The veggie dog part tasted like moldy lettuce combined with dusty cardboard, decomposing sawdust and dirt.  The vegetarian insisted that the veggie dog tastes the same as a hot dog, only better.  Upon questioning, she admitted that she has never eaten meat.  Well, that explains why she is out sick so much.  So, she is uninformed, uneducated, and incorrect.  I wonder how she would feel, were I to disguise pork as celery, and slip it into her meal?

Vegetables are vegetables, and meat is meat.  I have no problem eating vegetables, but I DO have a problem with people trying to force nasty stuff on me, disguised as meat.  Clearly, since I had no idea that there was subterfuge in effect, the veggie dog was no suitable substitute for meat.  I was not applying any bias.   I was unpleasantly surprised.  If someone chooses not to eat meat, I'm totally fine with that--just don't force that diet on me.

After an experience like the one I had today, I am not receptive to anything vegetarian, vegan, soy, etc.  I do not care for agendas.  Had the person come to me and asked me to try something different, maybe I would have, but I'd rather it not be artificially modified to try to immitate something with which I am familiar.  In this case, perhaps the veggie dog should have been shaped and colored to match fecal matter, just so the appearance would more closely match the taste.

If it wasn't so foul, they wouldn't be trying to disguise it as something that is good.

We often had sweet potato pie at our holiday and family get togethers.  Mom would also make fried sweet potato, apple, or peach pies as well as the baked varieties.

I don't remember where it was, but a pie was on the table for desert and I took a slice of that "sweet potato" pie.  Like your veggie hot dog, it was a big shock.  Turned out it was unspiced pumpkin pie.  I had never had pumpkin in my life, but because I was expecting one taste and got something entirely different, I didn't eat pumpkin pie for probably 20 years.

Then I was offered some spiced pumpkin pie and I agreed to take a small taste.  Loved it and will eat a whole pie if given a chance.  Just tell me what I'm about to put in my mouth beforehand and I just might like it, sparing the giver some disappointment.

For breakfast on weekends and holidays, we usually have both milk and OJ.  Food too, but not relevant here.  Anyway, once I mistakenly took a drink of OJ, when expecting milk.  Milk with lumps is bad, so I was ready to spit it out, but realized in time.

We're under a tornado watch at this very moment.  Got the alert at 7:12 this morning.  Very heavy rains.  My daughter has about a 20-mille drive to work and she's having to take multiple detours to avoid flooding.  In one area, she said trees had washed into the roadway.  Rainfall rate at about 8 AM was ranging from 7.5 to 8.5 inches per hour.

When I went to pick up the parts for the 87, I jokingly told the AutoZone manager that I had to take a detour because the Ark was blocking the roadway.

It's less than 10 miles over to the store I use, but none of the roads were blocked, though there were a number of places where there was evidence that streams had come over the roadway.

Since Fathers' Day is tomorrow, here's an idea.

I like my chair.  I got it used (from a deceased relative), because I couldn't find another like it new.  This chair rocks, reclines, swivels, and leans.  When this chair is reclined, it cannot rock or lean.  I removed the cloth from the recline lever, had the chair cleaned, and replaced the broken plywood base/swivel with a metal one.  Unfortunately, the new swivel base says it only supports 300 pounds.  That seems a bit low.

If you can find such a chair (not mine), I highly recommend it.  My chair unfortunately does not have pockets in the arms.  So, no cup holders.  This chair replaced my rally chair and my papasan chair.  My only complaint is that the fabric used to upholster the chair is corduroy.  If the fabric gets worn, I'll widen the arms, add pockets, and have the chair re-upholstered with leatherette.

I have a sectional chair that is a corner piece, overstuffed, reclines, and has huge arms, but it is HUGE.  The back has several bends, but is about 9 feet wide.  When my kids were younger, they used to sit on the arms while I read to my kids.  Heck.  The arms are as wide as kitchen chairs.  There are 11 pieces to the sectional, and they take up an entire corner of the room.  This other chair only takes up a regular chair worth of space, except when reclined.

Possibly, the chair could be raised a bit.  Maybe 2 inches.  I may see about adjusting the mount for the base.

My sofa and Mel's recliner are both 100% leather.  Medium stuffed I guess you would call them.  The recliner rocks and reclines only.  The sofa has 2 recliners.  No pockets or cupholders on either.  The coffee table and a side table are close at hand to each.

Depending upon what your flooring material is, I would recommend a piece of 1 inch plywood as a base.  Then get a large loop pile throw rug and cut and bond a piece to the bottom.  My hardwood floors were damaged by the legs of the chairs so Melanie got foam rubber filled plastic discs with a loop pile cover.  I have those under the chair, coffee table and sofa so that when I move them around to clean or rearrange the room, they don't damage the hardwood.

The metal might possibly leave a rust stain on carpet and would certainly do damage to a hardwood floor.

LOL!  No.

Driving a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, today.  The 5.7L Hemi has plenty of go.  Not a fan of the seating position.  The headrests force my head forward.  The backup camera angles are wrong, the pedals are too high, there is a sticker on the windshield in my line of sight, and the dash is annoying.  When accelerating, the transmission hangs in a lower gear after I let off the throttle.  Otherwise, not terrible.

I found the forward visibility bad due to the high hood those things have, but otherwise it seemed OK.

After inheriting a push mower, i used it to cut the grass.  This is the push type where you are the motor.  No, that isn't correct.  *I* am the motor--at least, when I am the one pushing it.  As the wheels rotate, they power a shaft with a bunch of blades.  The blades cut the grass.  That's the theory.  In my case, they beat the grass into limpness.

My theory is that the blades are full, but I have no way to sharpen them.  So, I tried adjusting the nlades.  I think they're adjusted out.  How the heck do you sharpen those blades, and keep all your fingers and skin?
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: Fierofool on August 23, 2019, 09:20:52 pm
The method we used for sharpening reel-type mowers at the golf course was to use a graphite lapping compound.  The mowers were designed so that the motor could be disengaged from the gear that drives the blade, allowing it to freewheel.  Then an electric drive motor accessory was attached to the blade axel which made the blade spin.  The base plate was slowly raised closer and closer to the blade as the lapping compound was applied.  The graphite compound worked like fine sandpaper.  The graphite was in a viscous liquid.  Our first lawnmower was of the type you have, but I don't remember how Dad sharpened that one, but I never saw him use a file to do it.

For anyone who has seen the Chipmunks movie.  At the end, Dave lets the Chipmunks steer.  Not that much in that movie is realistic, but it seems that a chipmunk's body weight would be insufficient to steer a Triumph.  This came up, because someone asked about letting a chipmunk steer my Fiero.  Yeah, NOT!

The left rear tire on one of my ATVs has a leak.  I did not feel inclined to use a jack in the limited space, so just placed the jackstand near the axle on that side, and lifted the back of the ATV, until the axle set on the jack stand.  Before I could chock the wheels, some guy who was walking his dog stopped by to tell me I was doing it wrong (dangerously).  Maybe.  The jack stand has a curved top, so the axle sets in that depression.  The guy's point was that the ATV should have been jacked up--not lifted, and I was using the wrong equipment.

I told him thanks, I was busy, and please help or move along.  Since I was also cleaning the mower, I handed him a bunch of dirty stuff.  He moved along.

My opinion is that it's an ATV.  Whatever I did to remove the tire is far less strenuous than the workout it gets while being ridden.  I lifted by the rear axle, so that I did not have to lift past the extension of the suspension.  The total weight of this bike is about 450 pounds, so not very heavy.  The 2-ton jack/stand should be more than adequate.

It rained a lot, today, so I did on-call.  I drove the 1-ton and parked by a shopping center, where I worked remotely.  Lots of vehicles stalled in the street.  If they asked, I pulled them out of the water for $60 cash, in advance.  17 toyotas, and 3 nissans.  Not bad for a day's work.

If they didn't want to pay, they could wait for the tow truck.

How nice of you to do that........
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: GTRS Fiero on November 22, 2019, 06:46:44 pm
Actually, yes.

Some years ago, I pulled these people out for free.  I was trying to go somewhere, and they were blocking the road.  The water is anywhere from 3" to 1.5' deep.  Who drives into that with a car?  Usually, they complained about how long I was taking, how cold it was outside, how inconvenient this was, etc.  One particular woman started calling me names, and told me I was a bad person, because of the type of vehicle I drove.  Since I was in my dress clothes, laying on my back in cold, dirty water, using my vehicle to move theirs, for free, I got tired of this.  I told that particular woman she could wait, and drove over the curb around her.  There is a difference between these people and me.  She was right about that.

Several times, residents have voted against fixing this issue, on environmental grounds.  Signs have been placed, to remind drivers not to drive into water on the road.  They persist.  For any drivers that choose to drive into the water, this is totally their own fault.  They can wait for hours for a company to tow them, or, they can choose to pay a stupidity tax, and get pulled out.

It is actually illegal to block the road, so they can wait for a tow truck, and the city will give them a ticket.  If they wait to get towed, unless they have AAA, it is at least $60 to have the truck hook up, plus a 10-mile minimum.  The ticket is at least $25.  Of course, it was their choice to drive into the water.  It was their choice to engage me to pull their vehicle out, and to pay me--a private individual--to do so.  I did not charge more for nasty things they said to me, or for drivers that were in deeper water.  The fee was up front, so I was not gouging them.  Driving the 1-ton does cost a lot.  Of course, the tow truck is usually at least $90, to do the same thing I did.  Most of these people do not have AAA.  Heck, some do not have a license or collision insurance.

Usually, the tow truck drivers get these people when there is nothing else, because most of the people waste time complaining and refusing to pay.  Ultimately, the people who do not have their vehicles removed by the end of the day get towed to an impound yard.  The costs accumulate.  As my children have learned, cascading failures.

Sure, I could ignore these people, and just drive around them (on the sidewalk), leaving them to their own devices and the financial responsibilities their decisions incurred.  Instead, this took more than 6 hours of my day.  I'm sure the vehicles that weren't held up by these people appreciated the efforts of those of us clearing the road.

Yesterday, it was 37 degrees outside.  I got soaked and filthy, because I was helping these people.  Today, I have a cold.  If I do this again, my rates are going up.  As I stated, the 1-ton is not cheap to operate; at more than $60,000 to purchase, if taxes, fuel, and maintenance are factored in, it costs about $0.60 per mile, or $36 per hour, IF I get at least 300,000 miles out of it.  So, my cost was $216, plus the cost to get there and back home.  My costs to operate the truck yesterday were $288.

When water is an issue for a week or so, the people who do landscaping, recycling, and plowing will handle this, but for a single day, it isn't worth it, for them.  There were 8 or 9 other trucks working alongside me.  My rate was as low as any other rate I heard.

If I choose to do something for free, that is up to me.  They shouldn't expect that.  I will not work for free, and be berated for doing so, by the very people I'm helping.

The city actually requests help from individuals, and the police do not ticket drivers who have paid to be towed.

Melanie used to watch that tv show.  We watched them build a tinny house.  It was covered on the outside with old rusty tin from old houses and barns.  I couldn't believe what they pay for those things.  Prices you could get a small regular house for.  They wouldn't be allowed around here because zoning restricts a property to only 1 dwelling structure on a lot.  There are some exceptions but there must be something like 3 or 5 acres in order to have a detached Mother-In-Law suite.

Someone you know wanted to build a 300 sq ft house.

Tin is great to hear in the rain, but terrible for everything else.  I remember people with tin covering portions of their house.  Nasty.  I'd sooner have a sod house.  Note that the roof still requires beams and tar paper, but the cost to build is minimal.  A sod house is cool during the day and warm at night for the Summer, and does well in the Winter--if you have a wood stove.  There is no need for air conditioning, and forced air is a bad idea.

My living room is more than 300 square feet and there's no way I could live in just that space.  And it's just me and the 2 little dogs.

If you have insulation in the attic, tin roofs aren't so bad unless you live under an acorn tree or during hail or sleet.  Rain sounds like a waterfall in the distance.  We had a tin roof on the camp in Maine.  It was wonderful sleeping during rains.  There are several homes in my subdivision that have replaced their original asphalt shingle roofing with tin.  One house that's the subject of the neighborhood ire painted the house bright green with a bright orange tin roof.

Yes, tin wakes you up during hail storms.  It sounds like a war zone.  When it rusts, it looks terrible.  It gets sharp, and must be replaced.

I thought houses were painted like that specifically to make the neighbord mad.  There is a house near here that is painted like a rainbow.  Oddly, the owners though that paint job would help sell the house.

My building is going to be a 30 feet wide and 40 feet long and have a loft to store my Fiero parts in out of the  semi-trailer and to store one of my riding mowers, Plus it's going to have a concrete floor about 6 inches deep. He used the clutch to get rolling, otherwise his foot was in the floor. That how automatic semis work, you use the clutch to get rolling then the computer takes over. That looked like a very complicated system
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Post by: GTRS Fiero on March 08, 2021, 06:59:29 pm
He used his foot later, and left his foot on the clutch.

I am familiar with driving several different manual transmissions.  I have driven the standard H, the 3-speed, 4 on the tree, 3 on the tree, hydraullic clutch, slap shift, a 2-speed, a 10-speed dual-shift, a 3 inline on the floor, several pseudo manuals, as well as commercial vehicles with a 2-speed rear end. I'm sure there are others I've driven.

Leaving one's foot on the clutch or hand on the shifter is generally bad.  Of course, for applications where the engine and transmission will be rebuilt every few hundred miles, you may get away with it.
Title: Re: THREADS ABOUT A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING

This wouldn't fill Robbie's requirements.   This is for the gearshift.  He can operate the shifter but he needs something to operate the clutch.  A previous device he found that used an attachment on the shifter to engage and disengage the clutch looked to be the answer.

My building is only $125.00 a month.

Good price for a big building.

The winds of Chernobyl have finally reached Auburn.  This rascal committed suicide when he ran into the side of the house while I was letting the dogs out.  Imagine riding a motorcycle at 70 mph with nothing but a helmet and sunglasses and catching this thing in the face.

Not one of those, but I was riding about that speed, and had a bumblebee get down in my shirt.  The dang thing was still alive, and not very happy.  Lots of stings.  I was holding the throttle with my right hand, and trying to get that dang bee out of my shirt, with the other hand.  I finally got the bike off the highway, and ripped my shirt off...literally.  There was no way I was going to wait to get my helmet off.

I've been hit square in the forehead with a Betsy Bug (Horned Pessalus Beetle) which is a black hardhsell beetle about 1 1/2 nches long and maybe 12 inch wide.  Running maybe 45 mph.  Nearly took me off the bike and left his horn embedded in my forehead.

I've also had a wasp enter my helmet in the left temple.  I did get the helmet off before stopping the bike.  Had to go back up the highway and get it.  I got several stings in the temple and on the ear.

I think I'll stick to 4 wheeled vehicles, with windshields.

I've had beetles get into my helmet, too.  Not pleasant.  I was going consiberably faster than I care to admit.  Even drops of rain hitting you neck at highway speeds hurts.

Yep.  I had a goose hit the windshield on a 40's Ford.  No more windshield.  The duck did not survive, either.

The beetle I pictured is a female Eastern Hercules Beetle.  The male has two large horns, one above the other that act as pincers.  It's described as a real brute.

Pat, you just need to keep the Fiero windows rolled up.  I've experienced bugs and bees bounding off the side mirrors and coming into the car.  Tegan is scared to death of almost any insect and especially a bee.  Thought she was going to crawl out the window one day when a yellow jacket bounced in.

It could be worse.  We were walking up a hill to a lighthouse, and my daughter started screaming.  We couldn't figure out what was wrong.  Turned out, a butterfly flew by.  Fortunately, she has gotten over that.

I haven't been doing anything except getting all of my lower teeth pulled and getting a denture made.

Is this from when you fell off the mower in August or is the heat stroke from something more recent?

Yes it's from when I fell off my mower, but I still can't wear my leg yet, it was burnt up to bad and it's still healing.

Last time we talked you said you had some infection from the sunburn.  Has that gotten cleared up?  Are you now able to wear the prosthesis?
