The Market / Who needs a power mirror?
« on: February 21, 2018, 02:19:40 PM »
I remember someone at one of our recent meetings saying that they need a power rear view mirror. I can't remember who it was. But we have two or three driver's side power mirrors in the barn, and I have the "guts" to a passenger side power mirror. I made a boo-boo on the passenger side mirror of my yellow car (the housing now has a dent in it). The only good housing I could find in the barn was a power mirror, so I took the guts out of it, and will put my manual mirror guts in it when I have painted it. So if you need a passenger side power mirror, and have a good housing, I can fix you up. I will even put the guts into your housing for you (it's a bit tricky).
BTW, the passenger side housing on my "parts car" also is dented, so I couldn't use that one.
It's kind of strange that they put metal mirror housings on a plastic car. My other cars are metal, and have plastic mirror housings.

General Discussion / Falcon Heavy launches, but the roadster will miss Mars
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:24:43 PM »
By now you probably know about the test flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. The first stage of this rocket is 3 Falcon 9 rockets strapped  together, making it the currently most powerful rocket in the world. And you probably know about the cargo -- Elon Musk's red Tesla Roadster, with a dummy in a space suit in the driver's seat.
The plan was to send the car to Mar's orbit, but Elon revealed in a late tweet that it's actually going past Mars to the Asteroid Belt.
Here a couple of pictures... First, the launch...

This picture will give you an idea of the size of the beast. The press was allowed to get close up before the rocket was fueled for launch.

General Discussion / Message regarding the government shutdown
« on: January 20, 2018, 10:14:31 AM »
From Cowspatoot on Facebook...

"My public service announcement regarding the government shutdown:

There are certain roads in the US that are under federal jurisdiction...such as the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since the Park Rangers that patrol these roads will be shut down, it means (in theory) there is nobody patrolling those roads, and you can get away with turning these roads into your own personal race track.

That said...through past experience, I strongly recommend that you don't try to take advantage of this."

Farmer’s wife: Give me that shovel.
Farmer: It’s a pitchfork.
Farmer’s wife: It’s not flattering to pose with.
Farmer: Who cares?
Farmer’s wife: I’m embarrassed to stand near you with a shovel.
Farmer: pitchfork.
Farmer’s wife: It’s ugly. You’ll look like the devil.
Farmer: Then move. Let me stand alone.
Farmer’s wife: This is a family portrait. And this belonged to my father. He built it.
Farmer: Don’t start that tale again.
Farmer’s wife: You were just a simple worker on our farm.
Farmer: And you were just an ugly red-headed girl.
Farmer’s wife: And you fell in love with me.
Farmer: I thought it was the other way around.
Farmer’s wife: Really? Who was singing outside my window then?
Farmer: I was not singing. I was reading a book to myself.
Farmer’s wife: Outside of my window?
Farmer: You were so stupid back then. You haven’t changed much.
Farmer’s wife: How dare you?
Farmer: Forty years and you still don’t know the difference between a shovel and a pitchfork.
Farmer’s wife: I can take your eyes out with that pitchfork.
Farmer: There, now you will look angry and I’ll look handsome.
Farmer’s wife: You’ll look stupid and I’ll look like I’m laughing at you and your shovel.
Farmer: Pitchfork.

General Discussion / Heads up if you get the flu, and are given Tamiflu
« on: December 01, 2017, 01:16:16 PM »
If you happen to get the flu, and are prescribed Tamiflu to make it go away faster, here's a heads up.
It's going to screw with your taste buds. Every day since I started taking the stuff, things have tasted worse.
Linda doesn't like it if I say "I don't know" when she asks what I want for dinner, but, honestly, at this point I really don't care, because it's all going to taste bad.
Luckily, my last pill will be tomorrow morning.

Our December meeting and Christmas party will be on the 16th at 1:30, at the Galaxy Diner.
We ask all attending bring one wrapped white elephant gift to exchange, and one unwrapped toy for Toys For Tots.
If you bring a guest, have him/her bring a gift also, in order to not miss out on the fun.

General Discussion / Lambo meeting???
« on: November 01, 2017, 10:03:50 AM »
Yesterday, while I was waiting for a break to turn left onto Oakbrook Parkway (Norcross) out of my work parking lot, two Lamborghinis went by, and after I turned left, I saw a third one going the same way. Was there some kind of Lamborghini meeting yesterday? I think they were all the Aventador model. One revved his engine as he drove past my yellow Fiero.

Watch this video, think of trying to remember all of this in the heat of battle. There are several of these videos on Youtube, for all the various WWII planes, and they were all this complicated.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Strange Starter Problem
« on: October 08, 2017, 09:36:13 PM »
This weekend I had to replace the starter on my yellow car. Before I describe the problem, here's some basic starter info.
There are two wires that connect to a starter. The smaller wire energizes the solenoid when you turn the key to start. The larger wire turns the motor after the solenoid engages and closes a switch inside it.
Now here's the problem I had. When I turned the key, the little starter gear would spin against the ring gear, making a horrible whining noise. Needless to say, I didn't run it that way for long.
I took out the starter and hooked a battery charger + wire to where the small wire connects, with the - wire connected to the starter body. The solenoid engaged as it should, shoving the small gear forward. But the motor also started turning, which it should not have, because no voltage was applied to where the big wire goes.
This happened a few days ago, and the replacement starter, which I bought off Ebay, arrived this weekend. I did the same test with the battery charger, and the solenoid engaged, but the motor did not turn. So I put it in the car, and it starts just fine.
I have no idea what happened in the bad starter to cause the motor to run with only the solenoid voltage applied, and I'm not curious enough to take it apart and find out. I'm just glad my car starts again.
