General Fiero Discussion / Pictures from Fieros at Carlisle 2022
« on: June 27, 2022, 12:00:31 pm »
Here are my pictures from Fieros at Carlisle 2022.
There were a lot of Fieros to see.

There were two convertibles. This one drove to the show, and this pic is in the hotel parking lot

This one was a trailer queen, and I never saw it with the top up.

Is it a Fiero? Is it a Corvette? It's both!

This Fiero had the engine in front, but since it's behind the front wheels, it's still mid-engine.

Since my brother has a 4.9 in his Fiero, I took pictures of a couple of nice 4.9 installations.

Here's another pretty engine installation.

I was told that this is a Mera, not just a re-body, but it's been re-badged.

Seems like something that looks like a Ferrari should have a bigger engine.

Every show should have at least one pace car.

Last but not least, here's my car.

Here are some interresting non-Fieros
This was the oldest car at the show. It's the oldest car I've seen at ANY car show.

This Oldsmobile had no show field sheet, so I don't know how old it is.

This old Chevy is beautiful

This is an Olds Toronado. My mom had one.

The year after the Fiero was the Indy pace car, an Olds was. Funny now the Olds pace car looks dated, but the Fiero pace car still looks modern.

There were 4 Cosworth Vegas at the show. Here's one.

Here's a Chevy Citation with a Cadillac 4.9.

Here's Pontiac's other sports car, the Solstice.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Speedometer correction
« on: June 13, 2022, 08:48:16 pm »
The speedometer in my 3800-powered Fiero reads high. Since I'd like to know how fast I'm really going, and how many miles per gallon I'm getting, I decided to see if I could correct it. I did a little searching, and found something called a Widget Man Universal Speedometer Corrector. It takes as an input the pulses from your VSS or ECM and adds or subtracts pulses as needed to correct your speedometer. I did a little testing and found that in my case, it had to be inserted into the data stream before the correction circuit I had to add to make my Fiero speedometer work with a 3800. The correction circuit looks like this:

That circuit is located behind the glove box console, so I mounted the corrector behind the passenger seat, where, if you will recall, is where the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is. I stuck the corrector to the carpet with Velcro.

Here is a closeup of the corrector:

The two little push buttons are used to adjust the correction ratio. A number greater than 1 makes your speedometer read higher, and a number less than one makes it read lower. When you push the buttons, the display lights up briefly to show the current ratio.

I set the ratio to 0.900 and went on a little test drive, with a speedometer app running on my phone. That's pretty close to the ideal setting -- my speedometer agreed pretty close to the phone app. I'll have to do some highway speeds for a better comparison.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / S10 brake booster -- I did it my way
« on: June 02, 2022, 10:46:02 pm »
I put S10 brake booster on my white Fiero. I figured that since it has a stronger engine than stock, it should have stronger brakes than stock. The result is a more pleasant braking experience. But it is not "touchy" like the brakes on some new cars, which is good, because I don't like touchy brakes.
I've read some about doing this, but I decided to throw what I've read out the window, and do it my way. Rodney Dickman has some info on the swap on his site, and he mentions a couple of boosters  to buy for the swap. One is from Summit, and it costs $194.99. The other is from Speedway, and it costs $149.99. But I just searched on Amazon for "96 Chevy S10 brake booster", and found one for less than 90 bucks. So I ordered that one.
The rod that goes from the booster to the pedal, or "banjo" is much shorter on the S10 booster than on the Fiero booster. Rodney sells an extension to attach to it, but I didn't get that. Instead I cut off the "banjo hole" at the end of the S10 booster, and much of the whole banjo off the Fiero booster. Then I threaded each end where I had made the cuts and made a threaded tube so I could attach the Fiero banjo to the rod from the S10 booster.
The Fiero booster has a mounting bracket attached to it with rivets. My S10 booster had no bracket, but just 4 threaded studs at the same place where the rivets were on the Fiero booster. So I used a cutoff wheel to cuts the rivets off and transferred the bracket to the S10 booster.
As you may have read, the S10 booster is too big to fit in a Fiero unless you dent the inner fender a bit. I was thinking, from what I have read, that I would have to make quite a dent, but actually only a little dent was required.
This picture shows the new booster installed. I wish I had cut the studs on the booster to shorten them some, because they made starting the nuts holding the bracket to the car very hard. No room to work.

This picture shows where I beat a dent in the inner fender. You really can't tell from the picture how deep the dent is.

I'll cover my cradle drop in this thread.
In case you don't know, the $400 Ebay transmission I put in the car almost died last November when I went to my brother's house in Texas for Thanksgiving. I had put that transmission in the car when the one that came in it died on RFTH. I seem to have bad luck with transmissions in this car.
Anyhow, the weather has been nice for a while, so I have been making preparations to drop the cradle. As before, I will lift the car by the rear bumper, but this time, I'm saving some work by not removing the "egg crate" from the metal bumper.

I cut a hole in the plastic "apron" under the metal bumper, and passed the chain between the egg crate and bumper. I did this because the egg crate is held to the bumper using "blind" nuts, and they tend to turn when you turn the bolts. And putting the egg crate back on is a real bear. So I'm just leaving it on this time.
I just have a few more things to disconnect before I can lift the car, but since it is supposed to rain all next week, it'll be a while before I do that, and update this thread again.

Club Events / February Auburn show pictures
« on: February 27, 2022, 05:22:47 pm »
I was the only Fiero there, but there were a lot of other nice cars. This was the biggest Auburn show I've been to, with the street filled, and the grassy area near the tennis courts also filled.

General Discussion / Car in a Movie -- What is it?
« on: February 05, 2022, 02:13:45 pm »
I was watching one of my favorite old movies, "What About Bob", and I noticed a car that looked like a Fiero. But on closer examination, I saw that it's not a Fiero, but I'm not sure what it is. Here are pictures. It's not in focus in the movie.

There's a 1986 SE listed on Facebook marketplace. The ad says "Parts", and the old price is crossed through, and replaced with $1.
I guess he wants it gone. See it here. It's in Flowery Branch.

General Fiero Discussion / Fieros at Carlisle 2022
« on: December 28, 2021, 07:32:25 pm »
Fieros at Carlisle will be on June 23-26 this year, and they are already taking registrations here.
I think there's a discount if you register in the next few days.
If you want to see over a hundred Fieros in one place, this is the event to go to.
