General Discussion / Fiero spotted in an old video
« on: December 14, 2021, 04:58:19 pm »
I have a video of the 25th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. The 25th anniversary was in 1994. In one scene that I captured a still from, a couple that went to the original festival are walking along and talking about it. Notice the white car in the background.

if I try to create a post on The Georgia Fiero Club Facebook page, it looks like it was created Ok, but if I refresh my browser, it disappears. What gives?

General Fiero Discussion / I'm out of Fieros for a while
« on: December 05, 2021, 10:43:34 pm »
The highway handling of my yellow Fiero has been getting "squirrely" lately, and on the way home from Caffeine and Octane, it was getting downright scary. The thing's got over 250,000 miles on it, and all the bushings are original. I think I replaced the lower ball joints some time in the past, but they could be bad, too. I think I'm going to have to rebuild the suspension on it. And since my other Fiero has a bad transmission, that make me out of Fieros for a while.
I don't want to drive the Polar Bear run in a SUV, so I probably won't be going on that.

General Fiero Discussion / I need my parts car gone ASAP
« on: November 28, 2021, 07:35:12 pm »
My trip to Texas and back was hard on my el-cheapo $400 transmission. The lock-up of the torque converter started slipping and eventually the PCM decided it wasn't going to work and quit trying it. So I need to re-build either the transmission in the car, or the one I took out of the car. Either way, I need all of my carport space.

For those of you who may not know, it's a Fiero underneath.
Check it out here.

General Discussion / Electric Crate Motor
« on: November 04, 2021, 05:10:56 pm »
For those who want to make a DIY electric car, Ford is planning to sell electric crate motors.
See an article about them here.
Maybe I could replace the duke in my yellow Fiero with one of these.

General Discussion / The 1973 Mid-engine Corvette Concept
« on: October 24, 2021, 09:18:27 pm »
Below are pictures of the 1973 mid-engine Corvette concept. If GM had decided to release a mid-engine Corvette way back in the '70's, I wonder what effect it would have had when Pontiac decided to build the Fiero?

General Discussion / Help needed in the parts barn soon.
« on: October 20, 2021, 02:08:32 pm »
Recent items added to the parts barn are blocking an area where I thought I saw a parking brake lever previously. I promised to send one to Robert Finley for his Fiero. I need help moving some deck lids and hood now blocking the area. I can't move them with my bad knee and back.

After some delicate repairs, it's ready for the road (or at least, the kitchen floor).

Club Events / 26TH Annual Run For The Hills Pictures
« on: September 25, 2021, 11:43:54 pm »
Here are some pictures from this year's Run For The Hills. (And let me say for the record -- it just ain't the same without Charlie.)tly
I arrived at the hotel in perfect weather, but apparently not many Fiero people like this hotel. I think only 3 showed up here

But there were plenty of Valkyrie bikes. That intake looks like a Truleo intake for Fiero V6's.

Gathering for the run Saturday morning

Lunch stop at Jukebox Junction

At the hotel after the run

On a tight curve, a car coming from the opposite direction was partly in my lane, and when I swerved to avoid them, I went off the road into a very soft, muddy shoulder, and messed up my car. The air dam came off on that side, and I tied it up with zip ties for now.

General Fiero Discussion / Houston, we have a problem
« on: August 12, 2021, 08:24:22 pm »
I was inspecting my new alternator mount, and found a bolt out slightly. Tried turning it, and no resistance. So I pulled it out, and found this:

It's snapped into right where the threaded part starts. This bolt goes through part of the alternator case, through the little metal tube at the top of the mount (see the picture below), and into the engine block.

In order to investigate this, I'll have to take out the alternator and it's mount, and in order to do that, I'll have to take out the tensioner/dog bone mount. In other words, everything has to come out. The bolt wasn't tight enough to account for the break, so i have to figure out why it broke.
So I uncovered my yellow Fiero and charged its battery. The white one isn't going anywhere for a while.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / What good is a 4T60e transmission modulator?
« on: August 08, 2021, 10:55:47 am »
The other day I found and fixed a vacuum leak on the 3800 engine in my white car. It was a little T connector on the throttle body, with one branch going to the fuel pressure regulator, and the other branch going to the transmission modulator. I couldn't find that T connector anywhere, so I jury rigged up a fix.
Yesterday on the trial run, my transmission wasn't shifting correctly, and at a gas stop, I noticed that exhaust heat had softened the new plastic vacuum line going to the transmission modulator, and it had flattened.
Today I replaced that vacuum line, but the transmission still didn't shift right. So I tried disconnecting it, and plugging it so that there was no vacuum leak. I went on a test drive, and the transmission shifted perfectly.  So what good is the transmission modulator anyway? I'm just going to leave it disconnected for now.
I ordered an "adjustable transmission modulator" from Rock Auto, and I'll see what that does when it gets here.

Edit: A minor problem noticed with the modulator disconnected is that the torque converter lock-up happens at a very low RPM. it seems like it should be a little higher. I'll see if I can fix that with the adjustable modulator.

I have been installing Fierorog's low mount alternator mount and dog bone mount on my 3800. It has been, to say the least, quite a difficult job. This article will explain how I did it.
First of all, courtesy of Fierorog, here are pictures of the parts he supplies (along with various bolts and nuts, not pictured here.

The tensioner shown in the picture above, which you have to purchase separately, is from a 1995 Ford Taurus. Fierorog's alternator mount requires a 1999-2003 alternator, so I had to get one of those also. The 1995 alternator's mounting points are wrong.
You will also need to get a Dorman part no. 47065, which contains the items shown below.

The Dorman parts are needed because the original tensioner, which you must remove, contains coolant passages which supply coolant to both heater hoses in the original GM application. On my car, only one of the coolant passages through the tensioner is used, and the other is plugged, because one of the heater hoses is connected to the passenger side main coolant line under the car.
Here are some pictures of the original tensioner. The first picture shows the "back side" of the tensioner -- the side bolted to the engine.

This view is the tensioner flipped over.

The Dorman parts are used to supply coolant to the one heater hose that was connected to the tensioner, and to plug the other coolant passage. The Doorman part with two red O-rings was prepared as in the picture below. I cut off one of the enlarged ends, and then cut a short piece of heater hose and slit one side of it so I could place it as shown. The Dorman part will be pressed into a hole, and the heater hose piece limits how far it can be pressed. Too far, and it will leak. (Been there, done that.)

I connected about 10" of heater hose to the cut end of the Dorman part, and inserted it into the hole in the upper intake manifold (which used to have a similar piece from the old tensioner inserted in it. See the picture below. The hole is right above the water pump.

To make a plug out of the other Dorman piece, I threaded the small end with 3/8" NPT threads, and screwed in a 3/8" NPT plug. Then I inserted it into the other hole vacated by the old tensioner, and secured it with a zip tie. (I may have to secure the other piece also somehow, but will run the engine to full operating temperature first and see what happens.) The pictures below shows my plug in place, and the dog bone mount with the new tensioner mounted just above it.

This pictures is from above, showing everything mounted (except the dog bone, on order from Rodney), and it shows my new heater hose routing.

I think Fierorog designed his parts for 1999 and newer 3800's, because I had to cut a dip in the bottom of his alternator mount to clear the oil pressure sender on my engine.

This picture, courtesy of Fierorog, shows everything mounted from the side (on a supercharged engine in this case).
