Private Mission to Mars

SpaceX (the company that has successfully landed used rockets) is planning a private mission to Mars. They have signed an agreement with NASA to get their expertise, but will not use any government funding. Here are three articles about it. In the third article, a Georgia Tech engineer explains why it might actually work.
