Some like it HOT!
« on: November 21, 2016, 10:04:11 am »
I was waiting for my biscuit at Hardees this morning, poured my coffee, fixed it up, took a sip, then a bigger one and about burned a hole through the roof of my mouth and decided to wait until it cooled down, then settled my place in line, waiting on my food. The gentleman next to me did the same, but instead, took a big swig of his coffee and immediately shuffled up to the counter and complained the coffee wasn't HOT ENOUGH!  I'm totally perplexed by the difference in the perception off "hot" between two individuals. I don't understand it. I guess I'm too sensitive to blistering and burning?
How hot do you like your coffee?

We have a 1200 watt microwave.  When I reheat a cup of coffee, I use the beverage setting which is 1 min. 10 sec.  Then I add milk.  Melanie likes hers warmed at 1 minute with extra milk, so it's considerably cooler.  Ray doesn't know how to subtract time, so he uses the quick setting which is 30 sec.  At some point before 30 seconds, he pushes the Stop button and removes it.  He drinks his black, so no milk to cool it.

It's similar when Melanie and I stop at McDonalds.  We get the same size coffee with the same number of creamers.  She will let her cup sit in the holder for a half hour or more until it cools enough.  But, she also drinks iced coffee.

I drink the coffee while it's hot.  About half way through it cools enough for Toni to drink the rest.

Makes us a good couple since we both drink it black.

Ok. Follow up question:
How hot is too hot?
My threshold for pain is low, either that or I don't wish to associate blistering with drinking coffee.  I guess that's the same point that I don't enjoy eating pizza too.

For me, a liquid is too hot if I have to quickly spit it out.  For food, if it's hot enough that I have to quickly roll it around in my mouth to prevent burning, or have to put it back into the spoon or plate, it's too hot.

I guess it's like eating spicy food.  Ray can smother his food with Texas Pete or Buffalo Wing Sauce, but he can't handle a single slice of pickled jalapeno.  I can handle some pretty hot pickled jalapenos, but don't care for more than a touch of hot sauce.  Love to munch on pepperoncinis.

If I let mine sit for about 10 minutes it's okay for me.
Brenda could take the pot out and let it run right in her mouth.
She has to have coffee creamer. I take mine black.
She thinks I'm weird. There's something about a 200 degree liquid
going into my mouth that bothers me. It was 4 days before I could taste food again.
You can't fix stupid but, you can adjust it with a 2x4.

If it's hot enough to make the roof of my mouth numb, it's too hot.
(I take my coffee with skim milk and saccharin. Or skim milk and Kamora. :D  Usually let it sit for 5-10 minutes.)

Tangent...
Who drinks real? Who drinks decaf? I prefer real coffee - yes I can tell the difference - but I can only drink a cup about every other day. Otherwise I get headaches.

Drink it black.
Can sip coffee straight from the pot, but have to let it sit for a few minutes at McDonalds, BK, Bo's, etc.
Maybe cuz my cup isn't warm at home so the first cup cools off quickly.

REAL! Otherwise, what's the point?  Same thing with alcohol-free anything.....why?
I will say this, not sure if it's the caffeine, or something else in coffee that makes a meal settle down, but I really enjoy a cup of coffee after a big meal.

I drink Regular Coffee.  Decaffeinated in any form, whether ground or instant, has an aroma and taste that I don't like.  Mostly the aroma.  It even stands out when you put flavored creamers into it.

I'm like Paul.  Sip fresh out of the pot.  Take-out coffee can be consumed the same way if you take the sippy-cup lid off.  Seems you can't pull enough air with the coffee to cool it if you have to drink it through that little hole in the lid.

I also drink coffee all day long.  It's my drink of choice.  Well, not really, but it's more affordable and acceptable in the quantities I consume.

Headaches that Raydar mentioned.  An experience I had.  I worked in printing most of my life with vapors of the inks, keytones, xylols, acetones, mineral spirits, and various vinyl thinners being a big part of my day.  We always had a couple of pots of coffee going and I seldom let the cup on my desk go dry for very long.

On the weekends, I got bad headaches, but on Monday they soon went away.  I chalked it up to a kind of withdrawal from all the vapors.  While talking with a neighbor, she said she had the same experience, except that she owned a daycare.  Headaches on the weekend that would go away on Monday.

She consulted a doctor, maybe a specialist, but the Doc asked her about her routine.  It was something like go to work, put on a pot of coffee, get ready for the kids, work and drink coffee all day then go home.  Weekends consisted of working in her yard or fishing with her girlfriend.

My activities were somewhat similar with opening the shop and planning the production day while sipping on the coffee.  Weekends were outside home activities like practicing or racing motorcycles, fishing with the wife, doing yard work or other activities.

Her Doc suggested that it was caffeine withdrawal and told her to have a couple of cups on Saturday and Sunday morning before going about other activities.  It worked and the headaches went away.  I tried it, having a cup in the morning and another at night and my headaches went away.

I can take a cup to bed, drink it and sleep all night long.  It seems that the body becomes tolerant and maybe even addicted to the caffeine.

Fierofool, you've hit on something. Come to think of it, the gentleman described in my first post didn't have the lid on yet, and i bet that's why I constantly burn the crap out of my mouth everytime, because I put the lid on right away.

I was helping my son practice his karate moves.  As part of this exercise, I had to grab his arm, so that he could practice twisting out of my grasp.  His arm was almost scorching to my touch.  Uncomfortably hot. His body temp was normal, however.  Different people have different body temps, and different tolerances.
