The right side doesn't have the problem, due to the longer shaft, thus a shallower angle.  FWD vehicles with that short left axle are probably subject to damage if the tripot is the same design. 

Imagine taking a 2 inch pipe and a 4 inch pipe, each 2 feet long.  Insert the smaller into the larger, fully and move one end up and down.  Not much angle, but pull the smaller one out until only about 6 inches remain in the larger one and you can see how the sharp angle begins to bind.
