Delaying release?  New one on me.

Usually, daycares and schools are closed when I need them to be open, and open when I need them to be closed...and bill you for being closed, even though you have to either take off work to watch your children or pay someone to watch them.

The coordinates for our parking area are  34-54' 30" N,  83 - 00' 17" W.  I don't know how to match this with the path of the sun.  Maybe someone with more knowledge of these things could tell me if my neighbor is correct in telling me that we are in the direct path of the sun.

It looks like it's in the path. See it on a map here.

If you use Google Maps satellite view and zoom in on the open area at the end of the dam, there's a power pole in the center.  Place your cursor on the base of that pole and click.  It will set a marker pin and will open up a small window that will have a street view.  In the bottom of that window will be a series of numbers.  Those are the coordinates.

I get 34.908414N, -83.004425W

We're trying to find someone that can pick up our granddaughter.  There's a process that we have to go through to get a person on the approved list so that just anyone can't come and grab a child.  First we have to find someone.  If we can, Melanie and I are going to try to be there.

Delaying release?  New one on me.

Down here, the shadow passes through about the time many schools are releasing their students, or they will be in transport during the event.  Some have decided to delay release so that the kids can see the eclipse.

Harry, if the invitation is still open, Melanie and I will try to make it up to your place, if she's able.  No guarantee, but we'll try.  Is the area suitable for using a power chair?

Yes.  Our daughter and son-in-law have several persons as standbys.  Tegan's old day care/Pre K and the current school has a secure method for pickup that assures only designated persons pick up a child.  Even a child's parent can't get their child without the proper security device.  There are no school buses, so either kids drive, or they're brought and picked up by someone.

The person picking up is identified by someone along the entrance and a call for their child is radioed ahead.  The child goes into a que line, in the order of the person picking up.  If a person gets there without the proper security device, they're diverted out of line and must go inside to be properly identified through records.  Helps prevent non-custodial parents from kidnapping a child.

Charlie;
Yes the offer is still open.  The area is all grass and gravel, so I think it would be fine for a power chair.

I hope we don't end up watching from shelter--or even under cloud cover.

Harry, It's beginning to look like we may not make it.  Mel's been in bed most of the last two days.  She has to go get blood tests for 2 of her specialists and has an appointment next Tuesday.  On top of that, no one has the protective glasses down here.  Our city library has them and was passing them out to city employees (I'm on one of the boards) but was told that I had to come to the Eclipse Party at the city park in order to get a pair.

I'm planning to go to Harry's.
Charlie, get a piece of cardboard about a foot square, and punch a hole in the center of it with a 10-penny nail. Go outside during the eclipse, and hold it with one side facing the sun, a few feet above a smooth surface (i.e., a driveway). On the ground, in the middle of the cardboard's shadow, you'll be able to see the crescent, partially eclipsed sun. No need for special glasses.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

I had thought about doing something similar to that.  I saw a suggestion to cut a hole in some cardboard or the end of a shoe box, cover the hole with aluminum foil, then take a pencil to punch a hole in it.  The eclipse could be viewed on the other end of the box.

This afternoon, the weather forecast down here was 20% chance of rain, with spotty clouds for Monday.
