Heads up if you get the flu, and are given Tamiflu
« on: December 01, 2017, 01:16:16 pm »
If you happen to get the flu, and are prescribed Tamiflu to make it go away faster, here's a heads up.
It's going to screw with your taste buds. Every day since I started taking the stuff, things have tasted worse.
Linda doesn't like it if I say "I don't know" when she asks what I want for dinner, but, honestly, at this point I really don't care, because it's all going to taste bad.
Luckily, my last pill will be tomorrow morning.

Well, I have some ketchup packets here, and ketchup still seems to taste OK, so whatever it is, maybe I can just put ketchup on it.
(Hmm... Ketchup on Brussels sprouts... wonder if that would work?)

Try ketchup on bean sprouts.

To my mind, the real question is, Did the Tamiflu actually work?
(Hope you feel better.)

Well, the fever is gone, but the sniffles and coughing are still there.

Our insurance company wouldn't cover the senior flu shot this year so we got the regular flu shot.  Melanie now is hospitalized with pneumonia and flu and they are telling me that all who've been exposed to her to get Tammiflu.  The hospital is providing documentation of a valid need so maybe the insurance will pay for it.

I'm sorry to hear that Melanie is still suffering from the flu.

I heard that this year's flu shot is only 10 percent effective. So it probably doesn't matter what dose you got.
In any case, I hope Melanie gets better.

The hospital told us 10%, too.

She's holding her own.  Slight improvement but she has a terrible headache that won't go away.  At least she's not getting worse.  They said we could expect to be there through Christmas.

Christmas dinner at the hospital?  Ugh.  They served me regurgitated mashed potatoes, peas that were the wrong color and tasted like paste, raw yogurt, soy milk that tasted spoiled, stolen eggs that had been boiled and had a pocket, and toast with curdled jelly.  Since it was Christmas, they served us with red and green trays, rather than the usual brown trays.

I hope Melanie can have a good Christmas dinner, with friends and family.

Melanie was admitted mid day Tuesday.  To this point, she's only had 1 bad meal.  That's because they haven't fed her until this afternoon about 3.  Mashed potatoes, broccoli, and some kind of veggie pseudo meat loaf.  Apparently a leftover meal since everything was cold and 3 hours after lunch.  I went down to the cafeteria and got her an egg salad sandwich.  Not good, but edible.

About 7 they brought a thick slice of pork with gravy, mashed potatoes, and green peas, a cup of grapes, tea, roll, and a carrot cake cupcake with icing.  She didn't eat much but a little of everything and said it was good.  The meal was hot, too.

The ICU ward is full of flu victims.  Anyone who comes into a room must don a mask before entering, and that mask must be disposed of in the room as one leaves.

I suppose in situations like this, the hospital could blame the bad taste of the food on Tamiflu.
