    Needed -- Thermostat housing O-ring

Back when I put my duke back together, I replaced the thermostat housing, which was rusted out, with a better one from the Fiero Factory. Unfortunately, I didn't have, and couldn't find a source for, the O-ring that goes between the housing and the head. So I used  RTV gasket stuff, and it seemed to work OK  for a while. But now it's leaking. So I reckon I need the O-ring. I'm going to try to find a generic one at Lowes tomorrow, but it'd be nice to have the real thing.

Re: Needed -- Thermostat housing O-ring

When I was installing and repairing golf course irrigation stations, I often had to replace O-rings.  Because of the wide variety used in the different stations, we carried rolls of O-ring material and a tube of super glue.  We cut our O-rings from the proper diameter material, then glued the ends together.  If you can't find a suitable O-ring, let me know, and I'll go back down to the shop and see if I can't make one for you.  If you still have the old one, it would be good, so I know what diameter material to use.

I'm not familiar with the 4 cyl Duke stuff , but don't you usually get a new gasket or o-ring when you buy a new thermostat? You have to remove the housing in order to replace the thermostat don't you? Seems like a easy to find item to me.

Course , most of the time silicone sealant does a good job.

On any stock Fiero, (4 or 6) you don't have to remove the housing to replace the thermostat. You just remove a cap that looks like an oversize radiator cap. The housing is hardly ever removed.

You might give Pep Boys a try. They used to have a shelf full of drawers with nothing but O-rings.

When I was looking for an O-ring for my distributor, that's where I found it. Of course, the thermo housing will require a larger one, but it's worth a try.

Re: Needed -- Thermostat housing O-ring

Are you in a hurry? I have an 84 sitting here at the house that I can pull the housing off of and see what the measurements are. I have a close that is an airplane mechanic, planes use 1000's of o-rings, maybe he can get us some from their supply room. He only works the weekends, so it will be the first part of next week at the earliest. Let me know, Scott

    Duhhh , now I really feel stupid , I knew that !

    Course , I haven't messed with a stock thermostat in a while.

But , you should be able to find an o-ring to work from most any hardware store , even Lowes.

A plumbing supply can make you one like Charlie mentioned by glueing one to size. They have spools of o-ring material in different diameters.

I found a box of O-rings in every size you can imagine at Pep Boys for $15. I think I have enough O-rings for the rest of my life now.

Hey, anybody got any O-rings for a 2.8 distributor?  Big Smile [:D]

PS:  Pat, I have your radio surround here at the house.  Robbie's here, and he brought it with him.
