Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your accident. I'm glad to hear your're ok. I wish I could have gone along, but there was a very important chruch function to go to.
Mike, was it your original ball joint, or a replacement? If a replacement, what brand? (Looking to avoid weak parts.)

I don't know...it was there when I got the car 4 years ago...  I inspect almost everything a couple of times a year...had the front end aligned 2 or 3  months ago...no indication of any problem...till it broke.../\/\

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

Maybe this will make you feel better:

I got an emergency call to go to the railroad today at 11:30.  Decided to take the Porsche, 914, and enjoy the weather and sun, plus the dang car runs fantastic.

Well, I left the park to head over for Easter dinner at my folks, where Johnnie and Dylan were, and while I was at a Yield sign, I got plowed into by a Nissan Sentra at about 25 mph.  I saw her coming, so I let off the brake and prayed I did not get shoved into on-coming traffic.  Knocked me and the car about 120 feet and I rolled into a parking lot.  The engine, of course, is near the middle and back, and yes, it really got the exhaust system, which connets to the manifold, etc.  The car runs, but very rough, and I believe that the valve covers got slung into off center, as there is oil covering the bottom of the engine.  Can't get under there, so I limped back home and parked it, and will wait on the insurance.  The girl is the daughter of one of my students from way back in 1981, when I was teaching in Lithonia, so I kept my cool before I realized this and after.

Well, yup, my very rare car might be history.  Sore neck, but I am thankful no one was hurt.  So Mike, "I feel your pain!"  Hope they don't total the car.  Anyone know of a good place to take it for estimates, that works on a 914?  I know about Auto Atlanta with Mr. George over there, but the insurance probably won't go for that high of a repair.

    Any ideas, let me know.

    Well, happy Easter.

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

Man, that is a bummer.  Kinda glad I had your 88 up here.  Coulda been 2 club Fieros out of commish.  But we're all glad you or Mike weren't hurt.  Mr. George is one great guy.  Used to deal with him regarding VW's when I was building kitcars.  But he does get paid for his work.  And I know the feeling when you look in the mirror and see it coming.  Yesterday, I had the same happen to me, so I took to the shoulder and passed about 3 cars to make sure I didn't get hit.  Got it all on film.  You can hear tires screeching for nearly a minute as the remaining 15 or 20 cars behind me came around the curves and found us stopped at an intersection.

Talked with Mike this morning, and I can't believe the savoir faire attitude that man has.  I'd be all torn up if I wrecked one of my Fieros.  Next time I see Mike, I'm gonna check out that cigar he's smoking.  I'm beginning to wonder if it's some kinda 'special' imported brand.

Yea, get me a couple of those also.  I was going to post that we are going to Callaway Gardens with the Triumph and Porsche's on April 26, but I guess I will have to drive something else, like a Fiero.  You guys want to come?

That's the weekend of the Fiero Factory swap meet.  Since you're driving a Fiero, join them instead.

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

Hey, that's right.  Will do.  Did not realize it was then, but that would be fun.  Maybe, if they write the Porsche off, I can just buy 5 more Fiero's and a Triumph TR3!  That would be nice.  Can we please leave real early!  That way, I can take a nice nap, once we get there, while Rob tells his fishing stories.  Lol, that would make a nice picture, both you and I nodding, like the one he took of you reading your shirt! Lol!

Thanks Charlie, see you in a day or two.  Enjoy the car, if you dare drive it!

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

Hey guys. Been watching this thread because we couldn't make it.

Sorry to hear about your "offroad" experience Mike. Just glad no one got hurt.

And now Conrad having his stroke of luck. Can't decide if it's bad luck , or good luck. Bad for the cars , but "good" that you're not hurt. Guess both of you could be sore the next couple of days.

Anyway , glad ya'll had a good time on the "Run" . You sure had a beautiful day for it ! We went with  the kids to take the  grandkids to a big Easter Egg hunt yesterday.

By the way , how did the Fiero's perform running along with the "newer kids on the block"?

What was the total count of cars? Looked like fun.

    Re: Fiero/Solstice/Sky Fun Run

Kim, in case you're still monitoring this forum, it was a great day for all of us.  Pontiac built a couple of great sport cars and it showed, yesterday.  I've reviewed the video, and a couple of our members have stepped up to produce DVD's and I'll make some VHS tapes.  It would also be good to collect everyone's pictures and put them into a DVD.  If your club's interested in submitting all their pics, let us know.

I've got a book full of runs.  If you don't have your route and plans for the Tail of The Dragon, let me know.  I've got 3 different routes that include the Dragon, along with hotel info.

Many of our members are ready to go at the drop of a gas cap, but for right now, our calendar is pretty full until after our annual Run For The Hills in September.  I'm still working on the Poker Run in August for Two Seats Only.  As of right now, it hasn't been decided whether we'll do it or not.  I'll let you know, soon.

I don't know what the official count was, but I had heard you guys had around 20 cars and we had 11.  It was a beautiful sight to see a mile of cars stretched down the highway, then all but 2 or 3 of them disappear as we got into the curves.

Ronnie, I don't think we held them up too badly.  We didn't give them route sheets so they had to stay behind a Fiero to follow the route.  :-)

Old medieval saying    "No matter how worthy the cause, how pure the heart, how sharp the sword,  or how talented the knight.... sometimes the dragon wins!"  So sorry to hear about your 914...but apparently 'we' did not bleed'  ...and that makes us winners, right.  I don't know about the body work, but the best 914 guy I know is Matt Armstrong...he worked on 944s and 914s at Automobile Atlanta for many years. He now has a shop in Cartersville ...Matt the Mechanic... 770.383.8402   He don't work free...or even cheap...but you can trust him, and he's damned good!  ...and other than Mike Barr.. Matt is the only mechanic who works on my Porsche...or Mercedes....or  Mark VIII.  Long way up here...but ....(as Forrest Gump would say)..."that's all I've got to say about that"

Hope you get to feeling better soon.../\/\

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

I think I counted 26 all together, after Chris joined us.

Somebody forgot to tell me it was going to snow today. We got a half inch on the ground.

Mike and Conrad I'm glad nobody got hurt, other than a few sore necks.

Re: Weather Looks Good For Saturday's Fun Run

Fantastic, that is who called me.  George still uses him for his stuff at Auto Atlanta.  I am coming up there with the car, after my heart cath or stint, depending on what they find tomorrw, then our band performance in Disney World this Sunday (we leave Saturday with 200 folks).  Anyway, I will get the car up there.  Maybe we can go get a bite to eat.  Will let you know when I am headed up there.

    Thanks again.

No wonder the Georgia Fiero Club has trouble getting and keeping younger members.

I'm out of the club. Good luck to you guys.

I'm sorry that you feel that way.  I think the 14 year old who rode with us, and the 16 year old girl who drove the 88 Formula (see last of Rob's pics.  The girl with the pink top) would disagree with you.  There was also a 13 year old girl that had planned to go along.

I realize that as a college student, you live in an environment that marches to a different drummer, and that realm doesn't always sync with the rest of us.  The event was started around the same time we have started driving events, for many many years, even long before you and I joined the club.  I offered a suggestion as to how you could get your sleep, and join us for the last half of the run.  I was hoping to see you there.

Hopefully, when you finish your studies at night school, you will join us again.  We've enjoyed having you as a member.  Be safe in your ventures with the MR2 and X1/9 clubs.

Eh it seems like whenever I try to give my input to the club I get flat-out rejected. No one has given me a reason for why mountain runs start so early. I know every one I've been on has had plenty of time later in the day, even the LONG runs we usually have for RFTH. A little run through North Georgia and Tennessee shouldn't have a problem with it getting dark later in the day. That is the only reason I can see for having runs so early in the morning.

I wouldn't spend my gas on a half run up there, and I wouldn't put me and my car in danger by being up there on 3 or 4 hours of sleep.

Yeah, it seems like I'm being selfish, but I have that right. I don't see why anyone would object to later runs.

My decision to leave the club has to do with that and the club meeting spot. I didn't like Olde Mill that much, but at least it wasn't as far away. I tried to get the club to check out a meeting spot closer to American Pie and The Brickery (the area where we USED to meet) but no one was interested and Charles Sewell and others said we weren't looking for a new spot. Then it seems that right after that it gets moved to Galaxy Diner, several miles further away. Yes, there's people out there who come from farther away, but gas is $3.19 a gallon and last week all I had was $8.

Re: Saturday's Fun Run - Route Map & Info

We'll never find a place to meet that is convenient to everybody. After all, we're the Georgia Fiero club,  and Georgia's a pretty big place.
I think most of the members like the runs starting the way they are, but maybe we could have short later starting run sometime. Would you like or organize one?
Are you still planning to come to Pigeon Forge?
