I bought my first 85GT in
93 for my high school age daughter. A failing pressure plate made the
clutch too much for her to handle, so I gave her my truck and I took
the Fiero. The car had 143K miles when I bought it. When I sold
it to Robert Finley it had 297K. He still has it and it’s showing
well over 300K on the original untouched engine.
I picked up the 87GT in November of 2001 with 86K miles. It was
showroom original. In May, 2000, I washed and waxed it, and not knowing
the judging criteria, entered it in a car show and got a second place
trophy. Then in June, did the same and entered in the Pigeon Forge All
Pontiac Show and tied a third place trophy. The car's a daily driver,
and I've replaced the seats with Mr. Mike's to preserve my originals
for the shows. At 135K I replaced the 2.8 with a 94 3.4 V6.
Robert Finley’s Uncle, Darrell Finley, put me onto an 85GT that was
sitting in a salvage yard in Sweetwater, Tn. On a weekend visit
to Darrell’s, we drove over to look at it. A little faded on the
rear, no body damage, great interior, and it needed a motor. It
only had 69,803 miles on it. Couldn’t afford it, but I couldn’t
let it go to the crusher.
I bought it, then bought an 87 engine from one of our members who had
converted to a 4.9 Cadillac. Robbie Finley did all the work,
including new brakes all the way around, and converting the AC to 134A,
and adding a few Rodney Dickman goodies to it. I upgraded to 15
inch cross-lace wheels, but otherwise it was stock. I sold it to
Don Kienlen with just over 100K.
I’ve had an 86GT, totally restored, an 86GT that was refurbished and
put back on the road, and a no options 88 coupe that will become the
club’s courtesy car. Currently working on putting an 86SE back on
the road.
I joined the Georgia Fiero Club in January 2000 and have thoroughly
enjoyed the comraderie of the club and the Fiero Community in general.
