What are you doing for the 4th?
« on: July 04, 2019, 06:11:40 am »
We will have BBQ, then enjoy a some patriotic songs played/sung by a live concert band.  During the 1812 overture, about 20 real cannon will be fired (no shot, just powder).  Finally, we will enjoy some fireworks.

Unfortunately, Germany does not celebrate the 4th.  :( So, like every good resident of this country, I'll be working.
Life is good!

Even so, you can celebrate it in your heart.  Thank you for the commitment you made so that we may continue to celebrate Independence Day.

I'll be spending the day with Tegan and visiting Dad, Mom, a Nephew, and two Uncles and Aunts.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

We were sleeping in today, or so my wife and I thought.  My daughter knocked on the door to tell us that she was hungry.  On getting up, we found a note with the following message had been slipped under the door, "Dear Mom and Dad, we made you breakfast for Independence Day."

Very nice.

Well, I was harvesting peaches and mowing the lawn. Now I'm resting.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

No peaches at my house, but I did mow the lawn.

Here are some piics.  None of the fireworks or of the cannons firing, because they never come out well on my camera.

There were only a few cannon, this year, because there wasn't enough room here, and they did not want to disturb the birds in the usual location.

When these cannon fire, there is no doubt about it.  Not far away, there is another park with a big barrel.  Long ago, it was fired, but there are people who complain.  The barrel of that cannon is about 15" in diameter, and about 30' long.

There is a pond and some ruins nearby.  Sometimes, people have RC sailboats in the pond, but not yesterday.

Obviously, kids enjoy climbing the ruins and the trees.

There was a group of people juggling, and another group kicking a hackeysack.

This park has a lot of pavilions, including this pavilion that is used as a bandstand.

Each pavilion is a different color and type.  The pavilions are of various sizes.

This particular pavilion is surrounded by a large ring of famous composers, like Bach, Sousa, and Tchaikovsky, so the setting is apropre.  The band played God Bless America, the Armed Services Salute, Overture 1812, the Star Spangled Banner, and other favorites, but not God Bless the USA, this year.  The usual baritone was not able to attend, and the soprano's singing was...not to my taste.

Rick Hubbard was there, and passed out 2,000 kazoos to the audience.  We all did several songs on the kazoo.  That was fun.  Rick made a living out of kazoos.  Who knew there were so many things that could be done with a kazoo.  These are quality, American-made kazoos.  Supposedly dishwasher-safe.

Afterward, there were fireworks on the river for about 17 minutes.  Supposedly half a million dollars' worth of fireworks.
