Anyone need an 88 Duke?
« on: March 13, 2019, 07:17:35 pm »
At some point in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future, I'm going to be swapping another engine into my coupe. At that time, the stock Duke will be for sale.
Mentioning it now, because I'd like for anyone interested to be able to hear it run, or maybe even drive the car.

It's got ~155K on the odo. I recently replaced the timing cover, crank seal, and harmonic damper, as well as the serpentine tensioner. (Rodney's)
Also replaced the valve cover gasket.
When I had the timing cover off, I got to look at the composite cam gear. It looks fine, although I'm not sure if they look any different throughout their lifetime.
I ran a compression test on it a couple of tanks of fuel ago. Ran ~145 lbs in all cylinders. It sounds good and has decent power. Idles and accelerates as it should. It doesn't smoke, but it still leaks some oil. It's either coming from the pan or the rear main seal. Since the engine will be out of the car, all of that will be readily accessible.

This engine should also be a nearly plug-n-play replacement for an 87, since they both have DIS. Will come with a manual trans flywheel and clutch, unless you just don't want any of that.

Anyone?

I had an 84 2.5 apart..... the timing gears are composite plastic/fiber material, not steel. The cam is located low in the block so there is no timing chain. Ive also seen these plastic gears in GM 4 cylinder marine and industrial engines.

What Scott said. They're made out of fiber reinforced plastic so that they run quieter. (As if...)

Just for the heck of it, someone should figure out the cost to ship to Germany.

Just for the heck of it, I had the Fiero Store quote me the shipping on their ABS headliner ------------ over $400.00 just for shipping! That doesn't include duty or the actual price of the head liner.

But just as an FYI - I have found a 1991 Quad 4 with automatic tranny with about 35k miles, for sale here in Germany. Includes the ECM from from a Grand Am.

Now that would be a challenge, eh?  ;D

Anyone wanna come over and help? Hehe.

\D

Hmmm.  Somehow, I think it would cost less to ship this way.

You are right.  The barrel of money being sent to me must've been lost in shipping.

Raydar, not that I am interested in a duke, but is there a deadline on this?

Not really. Everything is up in the air, at the moment.
I haven't even got the replacement engine here. Hope to pick it up in the next week or two.

The victim - err... car -  is also stored at a friends, until I get the Odyssey screwed back together. (The heads are currently in the shop, being reworked.)
Once I get the Odyssey sorted and driveable, I plan to use the empty garage space to mount the new engine and trans on a spare cradle that I have.
Once THAT is done, I'll bring the car back here, pull the cradle, and do the swap.
The car is fairly close by, at a friend's house. If someone wanted to drive it, it's a simple matter to go and get it, or just to take them over there.
If nothing else, I'll do a video before I take it all apart.
(I probably don't need the Isuzu tranny, either, but it shifts fine. So I have no problem keeping it as a spare.)

Hey, Pat.  Does your neighbor, Henry still have his 87?  He's been looking for an engine for a long while.

3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

I don't know. I haven't seen one at his house. But he was living with his parents, and may have moved out.
