I desperately need some help – Iron Duke
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:29:47 pm »
I have done some moderate repairs on an 85 Iron Duke....
Last weekend I replaced the water-pump, as I was told that the bearings were shot, so off I went and replaced it
The pump doesn't leak, but I had leaks elsewhere and planned to get around to them this weekend
Today the new water-pump started making the same noise and I could tell the belt was getting hot (it had snapped on me twice before, and that's when the bad water-pump started making sense). So to make sure, I adjusted the tension on the belt via alternator a bit, same noise...and then..........car won't start anymore
Cranks, but nothing else.
I know I'm a layman, but I have some knowledge of basic automechanics, I have sparks/ignition and I get fuel, but she won't fire up.
I'm also smart enough to know how dumb I am, so I need help.

Anyone willing to come out to my place and inspect her? Compensated of course.

HELP!

I just replied to your email.  My wife says she has no plans for me tomorrow.

OK, so I get fuel past the filter, but the injector will not spray. If I spray starter fluid into the carb, she fires for about 2 seconds.

Anybody have an idea?

replaced alternator this AM, ran for about 15 minutes, now coolant is just pouring out the bottom and she won't start again. I'm about to give up. Anybody interested in her?

Waited about 2 hours and she started right up. Still leaking profusely

Overwhelmed with all the hints and tips I've been getting here in the forum  >:(

I only know about 87 and 88 dukes, but maybe yours has something similar. There's a quick connect connector under the intake manifold for the heater hose. Those connectors often corrode and leak.

Thanks, but it seems the leak is coming from the front right of the engine block, where it's virtually impossible to see. Intake is on the front, yes?
All dry there, inspected closely today while replacing the alternator and replacing the oil filter.
Although the water pump itself is not leaking, I am fearful the leak may be close to where the water-pump mount is connected to the engine. Also no water seeping out of the weep-hole.
Tires Plus had it up on a lift and couldn't locate it, Service Stations of America told me it was the Thermostat Housing, which they replaced and that is also leaking strongly again after less than a week. They didn't burp the system after replacing all that and I just noticed in time she was getting hot.

I was underneath the car and looked at that.  It's ok.  The leak is somewhere in the area of the water pump.  There was water around the sealing edges of the pan at the front corner where it had run down.  Problem is that it's blind up in that area and you can't tell where it's coming from.

Just saw Don's new post.  I'm checking the P22 manual.  I suspected the water pump mount might be the problem.  I'll let you know what I find in the book.

P22?
What is it and where can I get it if I need it?

Disregard, found and downloaded it @ FieroNews.net

I've been looking at Page 5 under the 84-86 engine assembly and my print is so poor that I really can't make out anything, but there is a mount that's 90 degrees to the water pump.  That may be the culprit.  My first inclination is that it was leaking around a bolt.

The Haynes manual says to put a 1/8 bead of RTV on the pump as a sealant gasket, but Don says the 84 has a very thin paper gasket that should be applied dry or with just a small amount of copper gasket sealant.  He said it's very sensitive to pieces of old gaskets, tears and nicks.

I have my duke engine out of my car and in the garage. It's an 88, but I imagine that the water pump is the same as yours. You're welcome to come over and take a look at it to see how it all fits together if you want to.

That would be great.
PM me your address and a good time to come look. At least I would be able to orientate myself as to what I may be dealing with.

Thnx.
