Like a camel
« on: May 05, 2019, 09:11:02 am »
I've been told that, due to changes in deck lid height, the deck lid hump was eliminated in '86.  All my V6 Fieros had a hump.  Has anyone seen a Fiero without a hump?

The hump did not seem to make them go further, because it went the same distance with the deck lid off.

Then there should be more Fieros without humps.

All notchback Fieros 85-88 have the same deck lid. All fastback Fieros 86-88 have the same deck lid. Internally, the 88 deck lid is different from other years due to the integration of conductive material in the plastic, which eliminated the need for a grounded metal plate on the underside of the deck lid. (At least, that's true for notchbacks.)
84 deck lids are the humpless notchback lids.

The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

So, was the deck lid in the image above modified?

No.  It wasn't modified.  That's the stock fastback decklid.

Like Pat said, all 85-88 notchback decklids had the hump.  The 84 didn't.  The hump was put there in 85 for clearance of the newly introduced V6 and it's higher upper intake.  They probably just decided to make 1 notchback decklid for the 85-88 4's and 6's to save production costs.  As noted, the only change in those years was the incorporation of the RF filter being built into the body of the decklid.

It does, but I think due to the larger vent area and the longer lid, it just doesn't seem to be as prominant.  I can't compare at the moment.  The car is in the paint booth, already.
