EGR open while parked?
« on: November 17, 2019, 09:04:19 am »
Is it possible to get the EGR to open for testing, while parked?

I don't want to drive on the salt.

If you know what voltage is applied to it, you might be able to apply voltage with a 9V or smaller series of batteries to get it to open with it on a work bench.

There are 3 solenoids on the digital EGR.  There are 4 wires, with two of them being bonded together.  That may be to prevent the two brown wires from being used improperly.  I don't know if the solenoid receives its ground through the engine or through the circuit.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Well, I need to see if the EGR tube gets hot.

Get a hand vacuum pump. Available at parts stores, in the tool section. Connect to the port on the EGR valve. One or two pumps of the handle will open it. Unless there's a leak, it should stay open.
Or you can just run a vacuum line from the EGR valve to one of the "manifold vacuum" ports. (The throttle body fitting for the EGR is probably the only vacuum fitting that is NOT full manifold vacuum. The EGR uses "ported" vacuum, so that it will only open when the throttle is open.)

Sorry.  Mine is a digital EGR.  No vacuum port.  I should have stated that, in the first post.

If the underside of your EGR valve has holes in it, perhaps you can just push up on the valve through one of the holes with an appropriately shaped object.

I need to make the computer open the EGR, so I know that it's happening.

For future reference, this is not possible.  The vehicle must be being driven.

If the EGR is not vacuum operated, then it must be electrically operated. Applying voltage to the appropriate pins on an appropriate connector should get it to open. The wiring diagram of a vehicle using this EGR should help.

That is true, but the need is for the ECU to open the EGR.  In theory, an instruction could be sent to the ECU to cause it to open the EGR, but I don't know how.
