Whats the difference between models? ......86' base,SE,GT..etc
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:49:10 am »
I recently acquired an 86' Fiero SE, at least that's what it looks like on the outside.
I ran the VIN decoder on here and is says its a "Fiero", another VIN decoder site said its a "coupe"
On the rear deck lid it has the 2M4 decal.
My question is how can I tell what I really have? What are the differences in the models?
My car has the little side panels that say "SE".
I really want to start "working" on the car and make it a driver but I don't to get the wrong parts. I know its probably just cosmetic but i fell if its a base that's what I want to restore it to, if its an SE then that's the way I would go.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me figure out what I have.

I'm a novice, but i think se's had the v6,  but didn't have the gt steering.... and no spoiler. the rest is the same? I'm assuming it's a notch back as opposed to a fast back? photos please? post the vin and somebody on here will set you straight. they know all and see all....

All Fieros are Coupes irregardless the model.  Two door, two passenger.  The titles on all the Fieros I've owned showed CP as the body style.

In 1986, there were three models.
The Base Coupe, which had a 4 cylinder engine.  It also had what's come to be known as bumper pad fascias.  All Base Coupes were 4 cylinder.
Then there was the SE.  It was available in either 4 cylinder or V6, had the Aero ground effects package.  This is the same body trim as the Indy and the 85GT.
Next in line was the GT which is known as a Fastback.  GT's only came with a V6.

The spoiler was an option in 84, 85, 86, and 87, and also on the 88 GT.  It was part of the trim package that designated the 84 Indy and the 88 Formula and couldn't be deleted from those trim levels.  The spoiler couldn't be ordered on the 88 Base Coupe.  Except for the Indy and Formula, the car could be ordered with Spoiler Delete, or with Luggage Rack.

The 84 Indy, 85 GT, 86 and 87 SE were identical in body trim
Formerly my 85 GT

My 86 SE

Formerly my 86 GT

My first 85 GT and my current 87 GT

The Club Courtesy Car, an 88 Base Coupe (Identical to the 87 Base Coupe)
